Sir Robert "Bobby" Charlton CBE (born 11 October 1937 in Ashington, Northumberland) is an English former professional football player who was a member of the England team who won the World Cup and was named the European Footballer of the Year in 1966. He played almost all of his club football at Manchester United, where he became renowned for his attacking instincts from midfield and his ferocious long-range shot.
His former team-mate at United, Johnny Giles, in his new autobiography, titled 'A Football Man', describes Charlton as "the greatest player I ever played with or against". His elder brother Jack, who was also in the World Cup-winning team, is an ex-defender for Leeds United and coach.
He began to play for Manchester United's first team in 1956, and over the next two seasons gained a regular place in the team, during which time he survived the Munich air disaster of 1958.
After helping United to win the Football League in 1965, he won a World Cup medal with England in 1966 and another Football League title with United the following year. In 1968, he captained the Manchester United team that won the European Cup, scoring two goals in the final to help his team be the first English side to win the competition.
He has scored more goals for England and United than any other player. Charlton held the record for most appearances for Manchester United (758),[1] but this was surpassed by Ryan Giggs on 21 May 2008 (the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final).
Charlton also held the club record for most league appearances (606) until this too was overtaken by Ryan Giggs on 6 March 2011.
In January 2011 Charlton was voted the 4th greatest Manchester United player of all time by the readers of Inside United and ManUtd.com, behind Ryan Giggs (who topped the poll), Eric Cantona and George Best.
At the time of his retirement from the England team in 1970, he was the nation's most capped player, having turned out 106 times at the highest level. This record has since been eclipsed by Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton and then David Beckham.
He left Manchester United to become manager of Preston North End for the 1973–74 season.[3] He changed to player-manager the following season, but early in the 1975–76 season left them after having decided management was not for him.
He next accepted a post as a director with Wigan Athletic, then became a member of Manchester United's board of directors in 1984[4] and remains one as of June 2011. He set goalscoring records for both the England team and Manchester United, with both records remaining intact some 35 years after the end of his playing career. He was knighted in 1994.

He is such a great footballer and that was a brilliant goal as much as the munich air crash was horrible and i wanted them all to survive i am just glad he was one of the few who lived
Did anyone see him present the lifetime achievement award to Zidane? He seemed really shaky. Is there anything wrong with his health at the moment or is age just catching up with him? It was very sad seeing such a great player and a great man show the weakness of age.
Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Genius. I don't know what it is - but there's something missing with modern football 'greats' such as Ronaldo, Messi etc. (possibly that genuine, understated class) that Charton, Moore, Best etc. had...
@leroy621 is probably some cockney chelsea prick and his team were playing at the back of netto at the time of this goal, hes just upset that hes shite side couldnt get a bobby charlton or best or giggs or scholes or anyone near the class of uniteds legends tbh :)

i may agree with u Charlton might had the best ranged shot on any footballer ever,
eventhough i think C.Ronaldo goal vs porto make me think he has the best ranged shot ever, even better than scholes, gerrard, charlton or any other footballer.
You can't be serious putting guys from 40 years ago and today in the same ball park! You know how heavy that leather ball was? The thing they play today is a freakin balloon...
Technically, maybe Ronaldo or Messi are better but how hard can they shoot, we'll never know.
This man must have the best weaker foot of all time since you can´t decide which foot is weaker. He runs with the ball glued to his left foot and then from out of the blue comes a thunderbolt strike with the rightfoot. Amazing player.
This goal (v Mexico in 1966) got us on our way in great style in 1966. It remains my favourite goal of all time demonstrating awareness, speed, balance and sublime skill. How often do you see anyone attempting to strike a ball at that pace on the run? Sublime.
I saw bobby charlton shoot the ball from halfway from the center of the field and the goalkeeper saved it against his chest but the force was so great that he went flying into the back of the net and it was a goal
Because Europeans/South Americans have never appreciated the best British/English players. Even George Best is not rated by foreigners for some ignorant reason.
Oh I don't know about that. Charlton's is probably better, considering the fact that he had to run half the length of the field. Also, the ball was loads heavier in those days: really hard to smack it like he did.
@balalayker I can assure you the ball was vastly heavier. Its my belief that FIFA have dumbed down the ball for the sake of TV, i.e. more goals, players looking better than they really are, etc.
I saw bobby charlton shoot the ball from halfway from the center of the field and the goalkeeper saved it against his chest but the force was so great that he went flying into the back of the net and it was a goal and when he took a free kick the wall would move out of the way
The thing about Bobby is that despite being ravaged, and I mean ravaged, by survivor's guilt, he still kept going brilliantly even though he always looked so sad. A wonderful person.
I have a feeling that he wouldn't be half the player he was without the guilt. In some odd way, the trauma transformed into an odd kind of rage for him that drove him to greatness. And yet he was always the perfect gentleman. What a brilliant player.
NOBODY < has ever been able to shoot like Bobby Charlton. What's more, when Charlton starts running here, you KNOW he is going to score. See you @ the next world cup Portugal.
Omg i hate it when people try and compare Ronaldo to George best, Ronaldo could not fill besty's left fuckin boot man, Besty was in another league to that little divin puff and also Bobby Chartlon ey, what a world class player ey, people try and compare rooney to him, yano what i say, no comparison what so ever, charlton twice the player.
impossible to compare players of diff generations, ronaldo is better but he wudnt be able to get a kick them days because hes a diving cheatn fart and would cry over tackles.
I'm just glad that Bonny Charlton and not anyone else score that goal against us (Mexico), what a player! what a captain! simply the best character in football history!
Well I'm trying to understand you're excitement over the new membership but, frankly, I would rather rot in hell. As for the GB is GB, not UK...that has been my point since the beginning. Glad we're finally in agreement.
You're wrong (also, the bad English is all yours - nothing to do with what it says on my passport). I just phoned the Home Office and they confirmed that there is no country officially known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is officially known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland (full name). GB is England, Scotland and Wales ONLY. NI is NOT, repeat NOT, part of GB. It is part of the United Kingdom. That's it. Or do you think the Home Office is wrong?
Fraser1972, allow me to set you straight. First, you can't use the word "both", which refers specifically to two things, and then follow it with three. That's just bad English. Second, you say that the four countries make up Great Britain but you only list three!? Sloppy to say the least. Last, my British passport says on the front of it "United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland". ie. NI is NOT part of Great Britain but IS part of the United Kingdom. Hope that helps, sunshine.
a joke? Errr did best ever prove himself at international level? I've also never seen best play well without a faboulous other list of players around him, errrr like that video at the top ^^ u beta stick to artexin
if best had wasted all his talent, why is he generally accepted as the greatest British player of all time. when best left united, they went to division 2, they should of changed the team around him best has to be in the top 3

Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo are good, but comparing them to Bobby Charlton and George Best-Arguably two of the greatest players to live is ridiculous..
ManUtdRuleEurope 3 years ago
impossible to compare players of diff generations, ronaldo is better but he wudnt be able to get a kick them days because hes a diving cheatn fart and would cry over tackles.
as for gerrard thats diff;)
mikeypezza 3 years ago
When you say 'ronaldo is better', do you mean he is better than Best?? Because if you do, never speak to me again :)
ManUtdRuleEurope 3 years ago 3
Gerrard is just as bad a diver as Ronaldo nowadays. Liverpool losing/drawing you can bet Gerrard will be on the dive at somepoint.

Sorry - michaeldp0 is correct.
Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.
UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island.

Well I'm trying to understand you're excitement over the new membership but, frankly, I would rather rot in hell. As for the GB is GB, not UK...that has been my point since the beginning. Glad we're finally in agreement.

That's the spirit. I can see you are a man who accepts his defeats gracefully. As we all should. Have a nice life.
scrumpymanjack 3 years ago
You're wrong (also, the bad English is all yours - nothing to do with what it says on my passport). I just phoned the Home Office and they confirmed that there is no country officially known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is officially known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland (full name). GB is England, Scotland and Wales ONLY. NI is NOT, repeat NOT, part of GB. It is part of the United Kingdom. That's it. Or do you think the Home Office is wrong?
scrumpymanjack 3 years ago
Fraser1972, allow me to set you straight. First, you can't use the word "both", which refers specifically to two things, and then follow it with three. That's just bad English. Second, you say that the four countries make up Great Britain but you only list three!? Sloppy to say the least. Last, my British passport says on the front of it "United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland". ie. NI is NOT part of Great Britain but IS part of the United Kingdom. Hope that helps, sunshine.

No... the UK includes Northern ireland. "Britain" does not include NI...
Just go check it out for yourself, I'm done debating this with people who don't know what their talking about.
wikipedia -> British Isles (terminology) ... note that it doesn't include Ireland. Ireland and Britan together make up the British Isles... idiot

Sir Bobby Charlton es el mejor, el alcoholico de George Best no se puede comparar con Sir Bobby.
Best era calidad, pero Charlton era inteligencia y elegancia.

What a joke.
First time i have ever seen charlton in the top 3.
george best is far better.
artexjohn 4 years ago
a joke? Errr did best ever prove himself at international level? I've also never seen best play well without a faboulous other list of players around him, errrr like that video at the top ^^ u beta stick to artexin
davebeast123 4 years ago
How could he for northern Ireland.
Ramsey and charlton said, if best would have been born in England, the world cup would never have left england.
There is only ever one player from Britain to compare to maradonna and pele, and that is best.
artexjohn 4 years ago
Eh, last time I checked Northern Ireland was never part of "Britain". However... Scotland, Wales and England are.
There is a difference.

if best had wasted all his talent, why is he generally accepted as the greatest British player of all time. when best left united, they went to division 2, they should of changed the team around him best has to be in the top 3
