Love this and in fact the whole album 'All Years Leaving'. Yea it's not exactly the most original music around but why care when it's this good, besides I think it's always nice to see a band wearing their influences on their sleeves, especially on a debut while they may still finding their feet. They're downfall for me was not embracing and developing their more experimental side for the follow up 'Horse Fabulous' as showcased on 'The Way She Does' and the Lennon-esque 'The Big Parade'.
You're absolutely right, Robert Christgau is an incredibly well-respected music journalist. Which is why it's hilarious any of you would believe that malformed comment below was actually written by him - it's clearly someone posing as Christgau. The Stands public schoolboys? That's hilarious, too. Whoever wrote that knows less about Liverpool music than they do about this band.
As for the Stands - I LOVE them, Howie Payne is an incredibly gifted songwriter and an absolute tunesmith.
There's a reason why this band are no more, because they were fucking boring cunts with little talent. They emulated to many influences that they just had no originality. Gallagher got that one wrong eh, how could anyone have the nerve to compare them to The Beatles.
Well in Xgau, totally agree with you, Howie Payne actually has a wiki article, for doing nothing, active for 2 years with the one band and very little acheivement, request deletion i say.
More Campfire chords and pathetic melodies combined create one dissonant and ugly aura. The Stands are a failure to the vibrant Liverpool music scene. I never thought i'd say this but Nickelback even at their abysmal, can still belt out a song with more conviction than these public schoolboys. I hope Noel Gallagher isn't put off from his fledgling solo career after his shameful confession that this band were the next Beatles. Surely the Lennon poltergiest won't resurface, if so, kill The Stands.

The worst band you've never heard, thankfully. Another simplistic lacklustre sing along, without any strong hooks or a refrain. Repetitive and clichéd, as yet another Liverpool band try so hard to emulate the La's, but just look like idiots. Who's the biggest idiot of all though? That would be ex Oasis member Noel Gallagher, who championed this band, promising them a big future. How wrong you were Mr Gallagher. I'm glad this band only stayed around for 2 years, and i hope they never resurface.
the kids have too much money and technology-Too studied...they need to find their own voice and change the present world-they'd would be fine as a tribute band except I fear this stuff wows too many youthful, ingnorant ears. Not the worst I've heard though.
Yeah you're right, they are okay though, however 'when This River..' was an shameless Dylan rip-off.Howie badly needed to get over his fixation and find his own voice...
Have they split? Shit crack. I'm behind the times. I just got Horse Fabulous the other day! I may as well be in Aus-fuckin'-tralia!! They were a good band like. Catchy as pox in a brothel.
You're right he's so underrated! He's way better than Luke Pritchard of the Kooks, or Pete Doherty! Howie Payne really understood what made 60's music timeless music! So his music is timeless!
