I affirmed that this video footage was that of Mayon Volcano. Fortunately, this perfect cone volcano's eruption is predictable, and its eruption is quite gentle. In contrasts, to other volcanoes like that of the Icelandic Volcano.

@tongacan: Yes, footage is of Mayon is an active volcano and any.all activvities are closely monitored by PHILVOCS. The Iceland volcano was dormant/inactive, and less monitored due to its location.

Instead of being on a vacation... I got taken by its power and beauty and spent 2 near sleepless nights observing and video taping this in 2000. The eruption was exactly as how my dad use to tell us when we were kids.

So this was shot 9 yrs. and 11 months ago? It looks identical to the footage we're seeing today on the news. Only thing different is now-a-days, the media totally blows the story up, adding panic and now people have been evacuated from their homes since well before Christmas....and this will probably continue to erupt just like this for another 10 years.

Mayon's eruptions are almost predictable as far as how it erupts. It is as "gentle" as any active volcano could be. Eruptions do impact people, but if one blends in with nature and respect it, loss of live would not happen.

Early warning systems are well place and volcanologists and others are in constant watch to warn people of impending eruptions.

These smart steps do come to mind:

1. Do not live too close to the center.

2. When given warning, relocate (temporarily).

3. Government should invest in, prepare and beef up Relocation Center infrastructures and evacuation strategies.

Note: when I was there in 2000, reports indicated that up 60,000 people were evacuated.

It could be scary. However, we've learned so much in vocanology over the years. What is important is people has to respect the nature of a volcano... and don't do stuff that would cause catastrophe. Best example is not to live too close or inside the safety zones. Also, warnings are now available prior to eruptions. Best to heed the official warnings to evacuate whenever there is an imminent eruption activity.

It is true... see my other videos on YT /tbombon. I got more footage but no time to post-edit.

That event sort of ruined a relaxing vacation time though... since I did not get a lot of sleep for two nights. But, it was indeed a rare opportunity to document.

Mayon is an active volcano. It erupted a few time more since I filmed this. It will likely erupt again in the future... : )

Volcano activities are now monitored. Advance warning signals can determine erruptions and give warning. Now, the only issue is that sometimes, people don't want to heed the warnings.

Hi Lehn. I lucked out. My 1st trip back to my father's province in ages. I arrived during the height a volcanic eruptions (a total of 32 I think it was). It sort of messed up what was supposed to be an R&R vacation... spent two sleepless nights shooting footage, etc. But, it was all well worth it.
