You'd walk up a ladder, it'd be tipped and you'd dangle. one man dangled for 40 mins and he stole 20 yards of cloth. you bleed from your eyes nose ears you vomit, defficate, urinate then your clothes would be sold maybe along with the rope. hence money for old rope. btw i'd not throw my hat, villians were often adored. highwaymen, footpads etc customary to give a speech and on your way you'd get free alcohol..what a nice treat considering the circumstances
