No, because: fingerprints on desktop computers are ugly; Apple doesn't offer a system with a user interface optimized for that and a "dual" solution would be kind of messy and not very Apple-like; it's not ergonomic reaching out to a huge display that's 20cm away from you. What I would love, however, is an implementation of Siri (or some other kind of natural language interface as a frontend to parts of the operating system).
Having more options is always better...period. It makes more sense for some applications/games to play with your fingers than mouse. I'll wait for the day Apple releases touch-enabled iMac. I believe these fanboys (who're against the idea now) will have no problem with it and buy one real fast LoL.
With the screen adjusted slightly forward of the desk and slanted back like a drawing table then it would be in the perfect position to provide comfortable UI. Also a keyboard and mouse for times of heavy typing can be tucked away somewhere. Just adjust the screen to the regular position, bring the keyboard out and start typing. no way I might no be the strongest guy in the world but my arms would get so sore from lifting my arm up all the time I want to rest my hands and arms and if you were to lower it , it would become an Ipad
absolutely a must feature on future all-in-one machines. The stand ofcourse would have to be modified to fold or have the screen slide sown for a more comfortable angle to touch away the screen like on an ipad. It basically should give you an option to use as touch or with physical keyboard and mouse.
If you don't want to use the touchscreen mode, just turn it off. At least it's just there if you want it. Let all screens have that touchscreen capability. Just let it be the consumers choice to switch the function on, off or both keys and screen on. While you're at it, include voice command on every computer. Let the computer type what we say. Let's go all out on what computers can do. No more limits. Just have an on and off switch for each functions for the users to have a choice. Just put th
If you are a designer of clothes or objects, drawing on the screen cannot be matched by an external touch pad. Having a touchscreen computer will make you have no more limits in design. I think all screens should be touch screens. No more limits. Let's push it to the max. What's wrong with that? External keys and pads will always be there anyway. At least every time you need to edit something by fingers, it's doable.
My daughter with CP challenges with motor control and has a hard time with an IPAD however at the size of a cinema display she would be able to use it. It would be nice if they did come out with it- or at least an affordable adaptation
there are many applications, specially, sound apps like protools, bias deck 3.5, ableton live, tracktion, virtual dj, traktor, djay 3 , that are totaly awkward to use with mouse or trackpad that would gain a lot thanks to a touchscreen mac.
why has the leader of innovation, Apple, has failed to hop onto that train.
should apple not react, users might be forced to get touchscreen pc´s and hackintosh them, that IS a solution but not in apples interest
i think apple will make a touch screen desktop computer. but not a desktop fully based on touch. i think they will make a touch screen desktop but run a standard os x like operating system but have apps that use touch. for example for artist and graphic designers. Macs rule the industry there but for an artist. give them a stylus and a touch screen. i can see that. not a touch based operating system. but a Mac with a touch screen to co-inside with touch apps.
dude you have a great channel more to your question watch apple's back to the mac keynote and then you'll find out where apple are going with touch screen computers make sure you watch the whole key note
If they go further with that patent that dave pointed out, then i think having it hinge down in that way would be great for photo/movie/(maybe music) editing would be great but in general, no touch desktops do not work.
Apple said at their oct 20th event that they had tested this out and it simply did not work "it feels like tour arm id gonna fall off" - Steve jobs, so I don't see this coming anytime soon not even with the refresh this year
Apple will prob make a touchscreen imac first because they have patents for a touchscreen based desktop and a touchscreen macbook also OSX 10.7 or lion is adding a multi touch feature so ya also people its not like there not gonna include a mouse and keyboard it will still be awsome to use it though
I think touch screen phones are not that great because they always go off in my pocket and yes i know that the phone might have a lock on it but it can easly to unlock
touch screens are only for like phones n stuff... its actually really painful to use them after 5 mins. HP offers the touch part (though it doesnt work that smooth) just as a gimmick to attract customers...
at my public library, there are about 20 horizontal-screen touch-based computers, which I think is a great ides. the monitor is built in to the desk itself, making it feel much more natural, like writing with a pen.
I think a touch screen iMac could be good in some circumstances and would be a good configuration option but the price for a touch screen probably wouldn't be worth it especially as the 27" screen costs £900 as it is.
No point. I have the 2009 model iMac with keyboard and magic trackpad , and if i wanted to get an iPad 2 for my birthday there is absolutely no point imo.
I agree with many people here, touch screens are bad for me because I don't want my screen to get fingerprints, and when that iMac touch comes out (if it will) some people will do a full iMac touch iOS emulator which works on normal iMacs and you can control it easily with a Magic Mouse because the finger gestures are the same with the iPhone or iPad or iPod touch, and you could just move your "finger" by moving the magic mouse.
I love my iPod and I don't think having a touch screen desktop would be as good. It would need a way to clean off finger prints with window shield washer with I don't know their own water and previously used to make their own apple that was gray and made of metal I just don't see it.
The HP touchsmart screen feels weird when you drag something. Apple would make a lot better texture tp the screen surface (like thw iPhone's glass screen) and also a redesign of the OS to make it easier to use a touchscreen or the iOS type option would be awsume! Especially for laptops. Just think about it: a wicked fast iPad (as if the iPad wasent fast enough)!!! And of corse it would obviously be more improoved.
As a designer or a graphic designer, you might find extremely useful working directly on your screen and apple OSes are somehow made for touch screen usage; blending the two might as well bring a new "playground" for Apple desktop consumers, I'm thinking of "ms.surface". For a common computer user it could just be another extra fun feature.
No, obviously not. The whole concept is retarded. The safe/best distance between user and screen totally eliminates the entire notion. HP Touchsmart is a shit computer, ugly and useless.
Everyone I know is aware that I will snap the fingers off anyone over the age of 6 who touches my screen. And after witnessing the state of my iPhone screen, the question is pretty much redundant. No fucking way do I want to be constantly wiping that much screen space every few minutes. Filthy stupid idea.
I can see a touchscreen Mac being very possible in the near future. As long as apple keeps the same current features within the os, then any new feature like touchscreen won't hurt and is most welcome. The rumor is the next version of Mac OS X will be a hybrid that will carry over the current snowleopard along with a layer of touchscreen based ios 4.That is there way of bringing all the devices together. That way they can work better with one another.
I think a touch screen mac would be great.. and let me tell you why, im a dj and work in music, and when recording, editing, or playing music live, its difficult to click on a button in a program with a mouse pad(in a dark club)... a touch screen would let me press several key very quickly and stop and play tracks on the fly. i see so many djs with macbook pros, and they mess up several times a night on their mixing.. a touch screen will solve that problem. also live bands use laptops
I don't think iOS will be dual booting on a mac The only reason apple may do such a thing is if they were to incorporate apps and since alot of apps rely on an accelerometer (which I doubt will be in a desktop computer) this is highly unlikely. I do believe that in the future they will create a third platform that can run weighty programs like iMovie with the use of touch in addition to the mouse/trackpad and keyboard. Imagine dragging and dropping clips into iMovie with your fingers!
I like the idea of dual booting from a developers point of view :) and I also like the idea of a touch screen with the option of a pen/ stylist for graphic and art purposes; which is one of the stereotypes of Mac users :)
The last thing i want is fingerprints all over my '27 iMac HD screen!!! I do accept it on my iPad and iPhone. You really can't complain much at all there it is what it is.
What i want is more and more innovation!! from Apple and 30 cores with hyper-threading!! and of course, a "40-"50 screen with ultra resolution. I predict that the next generation of Mac OS X will be reaching a evolution and it's prob going to be called iOS. Apple is really smart in introducing and getting us use to it now.
I dont want a touch-based iMac. I dont want to pay extra for a feature I dont use. Now if it ever comes standard, then I wont have a choice but it isnt my preference.
I dont like touch-based desktops generally either.
Noooo! touch iMac, no way, its just gunna be another finger print magnet, no body wants that! its annoying enough to have finger prints all over my iPod touch, so no i dont think that would be good at all, with the iMac resolution, and the amazing display why ruin it with smudges everywhere?
I don't think that I would use the touch screen on a desktop, as you say Dave, having to interact with you desktop via touching the screen would not make for a very comfortable user experience. Even if we look at the second example where the screen could fall into a 30% position, I don't know about your desk but mine is a mess and to do this would mean clearing my desk everytime I wanted to use the feature. It is very interesting and knowing me I would buy one anyway lol. Awesome video mate
I posted my previous comment to quickly, if you could do the swivel hinge idea, it would be pretty awesome. Second half of my below comment is still true. :P
'This is going to revolutionize the all-in-one computer'
"Hey jackass! HP Tou..."
I keed, but I would like to say that this would be a pretty cool feature to have, that being said.. I don't want it to cost as much as I am sure Apple will make it cost.
I think it would be kinda interesting. As far as dual booting I am torn. I would hope that you could use both without dual booting but for having those extra functions, I would be ok with that...I like it when apple takes us in new directions or puts out their version of a product. It would be interesting to see....
Who wants a screen full of greasy fingerprints? It's bad enough with dust and crap that gets on the screen as it is. I think touch screens would be a nightmare. Imagine how crappy things would look on screen through greasy fingerprints! Touch screens for anything other than an iPod is dumb in my opinion.
I would like to see it even though I dislike Apple besides their mobile lineup just for the chance of seeing one eventually and having the people who love Apple have fun with them
"GIMMICKY" That's the word I was looking for! And I don't wanna hold my arms up for long periods of time. The only thing that touch is really good for is things like portable stuff (iPad, iPod, iPhone) and public information systems, like at a museum or art gallery or airport/train station/subway and that kind of stuff.
I can see some circumstances that having a touch screen computer will benefit you but for the most part it's unnecessary. If Apple can do it without raising the price of the iMac too much than it might be worth it as an option. Apples new track pad for the iMac might just be the best way to have a touch type interaction with your computer.
gimmick, iOS is actually pretty much the same as OSX up until the top layer of Cocoa, which on an iOs device is cocoa touch, they have the same kernel, an interesting topic, a touch based OS X would probably be quite buggy
The closest thing that I could see to touch-based desktops that work would be the ones that they have in restaurants for servers to enter what customers bought.
Heck no! I really don't see what's so great about a touch-based desktop screen. They don't really run like I want them to, plus you get all those fingerprints. I love my iMac screen, I don't want to have a bunch of smudges all over it.
i believe the idea for a touch based imac is pretty ok i mean its just like front row, like how many times do you really use front row; so i mean its a good idea but dual boot i dont really like that it should be like parallel where u can switch within snow leopard, but then again why have touch based imac when u have an iPad. so i would rate that 6/10
My iPod Touch 2G and 1G have been crashing a lot and i have barely completed my 1 year with it. I think Apple is making the new fimwares crash old iDevices on purpose so you can upgrade. Or they could at least stop making new firmwares for old devices and keep it at the most stable......
@ACMiLan1113 if you havnt had it for a year yet, your warranty will still be up, so if i were you i would take it back, and ask them to repair it, i wouldnt say that theyre doing it on purpose, try doing a restore on itunes before you take it in, if the restore doesnt work, then take it in, explain what going on and they should repair it, even if you have to pay like 20£ or 35$ its worth it, trust me =)
Yeah, don't like the dual booting or the touch screen idea. But perhaps once I am able to try it out, I'd be able to come to a more definite opinion. The only touch screen I'd be interested in would be if the 10GUI idea was implemented into Apple. But this would definitely require a whole new operating system.
I don,t think a touch desktop would work but what they could do is make a bigger tablet say 12 or 14" and have it docked and paired with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse running osx and when undocked it boots into ios4
@woohoo70 Agreed. If there was something like that I think it would be more useful than having something like an iMac running iOS4 and OSX. I think that iOS is more for entertainment and basic mobile computing. Also, I would rather use a fully-fledged application than a dummied-down version of it for iOS. Why drive a Mini Cooper when you have a Ferrari?
i think its more of a portable device thing. i don't see apple investing in a technology that has a lot of disadvantages/negatives. although they have done in the past.
It sounds like an interesting idea although I still believe that a mouse and keyboard is the way to go if you are just sitting at a desk in front of the display. Inputing text on touchscreen desktops/all in ones is just way to slow without a keyboard, and once you have a keyboard may as well have a mouse as well so for now it does not seem all that enticing.
I'm not into the touch screen. My iPad is fine for touchscreen and know how it gets fingerprinted up and really can't imagine the iMac's glossy screen being covered with fingerprints. Not into the idea
wouldn't a touch based imac cannibalise some of the ipads sales?? :/ i just don't think it would work so well swivelling a screen, at least with the ipod touch and ipad it feels comfortable to use, i doubt it would on an imac. unless the screen could physically come out some how :S
i would love to see a touch based imac, but not ios4. I want to use snow leopard with a touch interface so i can use my day to day mac programs with touch
Touch based desktops aren't going to be good unless it's running a different operating system than a desktop operating system. I think that dual booting into iOS would be pretty cool. I think that there is potential for that.
I see no use. Just a gimmick. We sell HP TouchSmarts where I work, along with Gateway's all-in-one touch-based offering, and both of them are terrible as far as their specific touch UIs go. Glitchy and gimmicky. Nothing more to it.
I don't think I would like it... I would accept it if Mac OS X stayed EXACTLY the same and you still have the option to use a mouse and keyboard. In my opinion, the closest touch-controls should come to computers is in a tablet.
i don't see a use for a touch based desktop computer or a laptop. there is a company that does make touch screen apple computers, but i think apple should be doing something that no one else has done before.
no its a bad idea a vertical touch screen would give you arm ache and leave fingerprints on the display, the magic trackpad is already made for touch also.
no, I like to use the mouse.

I would most certainly like a touch-screen iMac. Then all fanboys would put a sock in it saying "touchscreen on desktops sucks"

Imagine dragging and dropping clips into iMovie with your fingers!
karkooshy95 1 year ago

I dont like touch-based desktops generally either.
unicyclepeon 1 year ago
Noooo! touch iMac, no way, its just gunna be another finger print magnet, no body wants that! its annoying enough to have finger prints all over my iPod touch, so no i dont think that would be good at all, with the iMac resolution, and the amazing display why ruin it with smudges everywhere?

I don't think that I would use the touch screen on a desktop, as you say Dave, having to interact with you desktop via touching the screen would not make for a very comfortable user experience. Even if we look at the second example where the screen could fall into a 30% position, I don't know about your desk but mine is a mess and to do this would mean clearing my desk everytime I wanted to use the feature. It is very interesting and knowing me I would buy one anyway lol. Awesome video mate

1. touch based iMac: HELL NO
2. iOS + OSX: interesting compromise, but I don't think it would bring apple any step further

"Hey jackass! HP Tou..."
I keed, but I would like to say that this would be a pretty cool feature to have, that being said.. I don't want it to cost as much as I am sure Apple will make it cost.
NeilJillett1996 1 year ago

How about when you put it down, iOS shows up/takes over, and iOS would have its own separate processor and RAM. It would put Snow Leopard on standby.

"GIMMICKY" That's the word I was looking for! And I don't wanna hold my arms up for long periods of time. The only thing that touch is really good for is things like portable stuff (iPad, iPod, iPhone) and public information systems, like at a museum or art gallery or airport/train station/subway and that kind of stuff.
likethepear 1 year ago
I can see some circumstances that having a touch screen computer will benefit you but for the most part it's unnecessary. If Apple can do it without raising the price of the iMac too much than it might be worth it as an option. Apples new track pad for the iMac might just be the best way to have a touch type interaction with your computer.
lawnmowerdude 1 year ago
gimmick, iOS is actually pretty much the same as OSX up until the top layer of Cocoa, which on an iOs device is cocoa touch, they have the same kernel, an interesting topic, a touch based OS X would probably be quite buggy

The closest thing that I could see to touch-based desktops that work would be the ones that they have in restaurants for servers to enter what customers bought.

Well I don't like apple products in general, but the iMac is one of things that is actually designed well.
I don't know why they would want to make a touch screen iMac. No one is gonna lean over all day touching a screen, and imagine how dirty they'd get.
Better off just sticking with a mouse.

Heck no! I really don't see what's so great about a touch-based desktop screen. They don't really run like I want them to, plus you get all those fingerprints. I love my iMac screen, I don't want to have a bunch of smudges all over it.

For phones: Great. Desktops: It's a gimmick. Seems so cool in a store but even then just try a bit of web browsing or email on one.

i believe the idea for a touch based imac is pretty ok i mean its just like front row, like how many times do you really use front row; so i mean its a good idea but dual boot i dont really like that it should be like parallel where u can switch within snow leopard, but then again why have touch based imac when u have an iPad. so i would rate that 6/10

My iPod Touch 2G and 1G have been crashing a lot and i have barely completed my 1 year with it. I think Apple is making the new fimwares crash old iDevices on purpose so you can upgrade. Or they could at least stop making new firmwares for old devices and keep it at the most stable......
ACMiLan1113 1 year ago 23

I don,t think a touch desktop would work but what they could do is make a bigger tablet say 12 or 14" and have it docked and paired with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse running osx and when undocked it boots into ios4
woohoo70 1 year ago
@woohoo70 Agreed. If there was something like that I think it would be more useful than having something like an iMac running iOS4 and OSX. I think that iOS is more for entertainment and basic mobile computing. Also, I would rather use a fully-fledged application than a dummied-down version of it for iOS. Why drive a Mini Cooper when you have a Ferrari?
ParchmentTwiser 1 year ago
i think its more of a portable device thing. i don't see apple investing in a technology that has a lot of disadvantages/negatives. although they have done in the past.
CrossTechTips 1 year ago
It sounds like an interesting idea although I still believe that a mouse and keyboard is the way to go if you are just sitting at a desk in front of the display. Inputing text on touchscreen desktops/all in ones is just way to slow without a keyboard, and once you have a keyboard may as well have a mouse as well so for now it does not seem all that enticing.

No, if anything a 3rd party manufacturer could capitalize on an idea of making a touch based attachment for the imacs macbooks and apple displays.

wouldn't a touch based imac cannibalise some of the ipads sales?? :/ i just don't think it would work so well swivelling a screen, at least with the ipod touch and ipad it feels comfortable to use, i doubt it would on an imac. unless the screen could physically come out some how :S
