The thing about Ruffian.. she didn't just beat the fillies of her generation.. she beat those before her as well.... how many records did she toss to the curb? She is so unhurried in her running... she just simply runs faster, much faster, than the rest of the horses. She truly must have had one of the most efficient strides ever blessed into a race horse. Just amazing.. and she would have whipped the pants off Foolish Pleasure.
I wish I had been alive during this time period. The horses now are treated like fine china. Push them like you would a human athlete. They can take it. It'll strengthen their bones. A short five minute breeze? Yea. That's gonna make them strong. /sarcasm

IMO, had the came through the same era of racing, and had been able to have raced against one another, Ruffian would have destroyed Rachel Alexandra on the front end of a race. I believe Ruffian would have drawn away from Rachel, rather easily, because Rachel tends to tire at the end of a grueling race. Ruffian had unbelievable stamina. Usually drawing further ahead at the end of a race, not fighting to hold off the competition. TJMO.
Zenyatta is a 17 1/2 hand amazon! Bigger than Ruffian, bigger even than Secretariat himself! In my heart I feel she came here to finish the job Ruffian started. No, sorry - though I love Ruffian I doubt she would beat Zenyatta. Even Secretariat might not be able to beat her. She a rare one of a kind Superhorse! Be thankful she's here now where we can all enjoy her.
@patty0130 Zenyatta is a big filly, this is true.... but her times do not reflect the same calibar as Ruffian and Secretariat... not even close. Zenyatta has been a huge boom to Thoroughbred racing and of course the dummies in marketing have made an epic fail of not promoting her and her contribution to the sport better.. but the freaks like Ruffian and Secretariat.... so far.. they have been untouchable... even by Zenyatta, or Big Brown, or Funny Cide, or Empire Maker, or War Emblem, etc.

Ruffian just leaves me speechless. When I see a horse like her I just sit in total awe. I always find myself looking at my young horses coming up and wonder if he or she is the one. Horses like her are what make me love the sport.

cf1970...this video shows a time of 1:34 and 2/5ths. I have folks telling me her Acorn time was 1:33 and 4/5ths??? Which is it??? Thank you!!!

ruffian was and still is amazing and her death was so sad i couldnt stop crying when i founf out why she died...
Ruffian and Phar Lap didnt live long but in the years that they did they were legendary and they still are!

Ruffian..
She was just so perfect and what made har perfect made her die.
She had the mind of a true athlete, never giving in, never letting anyone get in front.
No Zenyatta or Rachel would ever beat her..
Sorry, they're fine fillies, but Ruffian was just in her own class-above all other fillies.
I doubt that even Ruffian would had beat Secretariat-Not in the Belmont-No one would ever had caught the bullet in that race.
