Hello to everybody...I'm the italian OS1 that was on board of the Simpson between Nov 97-<Nov 98 great ship great people i had lot of fun. I hope that somebody rememb me....I work now as Air traffic Controller in Italy..
that is Senior Cheif (RET) Paul Drummond. He was on the shipback in the 80's, not sure of the date. He went t owork for CSI doing training manuals, and was on board this day taking some photos, and invited us to take a tour of the ship. It was on a Saturday, will the ship was having some repairs at Mayport Naval Station, Jax., Fl.
thats wassup i was on the USS Simpson FFG 56 from 2005- apr 2009...good times bad times...but that waS MY Engine Room (MER for those who know better)...GSM2 Mac (vet)
My buddy's name is Paul too, Paul Drummond, not sure what years he was son the ship. He has since retired and as of this vid, he was working for some company that wrote training manuals for the Navy, now he has moved to Alexandria Egypt, doing fiefighting training for th Egytian Navy. A great tour guide! Thanks for the kind comment!! Take care!
and spent plenty of time at the helm. I can tell you that the throttle position sensor would indicate 30+ knots, but we would rarely ever use it. Most of the time we only ran with one engine online. I was told that at emergency flank with both engines online it would run 33-35 knots burning upwards of 3800 gallons of fuel per hour. We had a fuel capacity of 209,000 gallons of DFM (deisel fuel marine) Thanks for the post!!!!!!!
(2) GE LM-2500 gas turbines feed power to the Western Reduction gear (MRG or RED), turning a single shaft and 5 blade, controlable-pitch screw. I believe the shaft horsepower was about 50,000 or so.
Think of these gears like your car's transmission.
I served as a Damage Controlman on this class of ship for 3 years, and spent a LOT of time "in the hole", or in engineering and equipment spaces.
Neat video of the SCPO giving us part of the Main Engine Room tour, thanks for the memories!
OK, so we got a twin screw vessel with gas turbines geared down to the shaft. Som comaarison...:
The Lisitania was a 4 screw vessel with revoloutionary(for 1906) steam turbines direct drive to the screws. 68 THOUSAND horsepower!!!! 35 thousand tons, she could make 26 knotts.
i have no idea. Paul is the Navy man (Retired Senior Chief) he may know. This was my first trip on a Navy ship. There is a web site with information on this ship. Do a search on FFG-56 it has lots of stats for this and I guess any other ship in the Navy fleet. It was a very interesting trip, and I have hopes to go onto another oneday soon.
