Wholly crap! Ive been doing Kali/Eskrima for the last year and my sensei makesknives and asked us to design the knife of our choice. This is practically Identical the design I cam up with for most of the reasons you thought of.. Great blade!
your video caught my eye because i had a cold steel indian war club that i loved, swinging it with one hand was comfortable, anyway it looks like your design has that same sweet swing, i want one
@Boom97922 If a large knife is properly heat treated and done with good steel you should never throw it, that is the fastest, most sure way to break a knife.
I don't like the idea of the nail pull in the pommel because you wouldn't have much leverage to use it safely. How about adding some lashing holes, I know its a little big for that , but I would rather have them and not need it than the other way around.
The Condor Kukri Machete has arched spine this creates more of a hooking swing and results in less shock towards the handle especially when cutting brush with belly of the blade. It is something to consider. Although, I know you said that you like the idea of a combination tool with a saw toothed back.
i was excited to buy this. then i found out you didnt put a saw on the back, you didnt make the handle like you said, and you didnt put the ruler on it either. i was almost sad.
@vassal11 lmao ur comment made me lol he is makeing a knife with the same abilitys as the russian machete and more he is not trying to beat the design retard
i would put the nail pull much lower down to bring down blade stress. or extend the tang out more and turn it into a pry bar, with a sheath on of coarse
@KCskin Right on. I'm so glad I put out the offer for suggestions. Thanks, and you're right on all accounts. The sawback is out and the new designs feature a double-handed handle.
@envirosponsible send one my way i'm' getting excited about the design myself its really cool. also about the nail lift yes convenient but not in the middle of the blade not sure where i'd put it though if you end up selling the blade design that you make please let me know so you can send one my way
I can not see the blade surviving very long with the nail puller. Metal is too thin.
What you could do is just in front of the saw teeth (on the blade spine) add some hard steel (1/8" thick x 3/8" square pieces on both sides (welded or folded)) and carve a small nail puller notch into the blade and 1/8" pieces.
That way you will have the full strength of the blade behind you, and the 1/8" pieces will not effect the cutting performance.
It looks like the nail puller would to awkward to use because of the kukri curve and the handle would be on it's side. But other than that it looks good. You should have a prybar in you're bug out bag like I do. Prybars have 3 ways to pull nails, can be used as a hammer a wedge to split wood, and other things.
I like the nail puller idea. It would be a nice feature if it had a thumb side guard opposite the bolster to protect the hand from slipping forward. Even a three quarter inch rise would be better than nothing at all.
I've cut the living heck out of my fingers when I've skinned an animal or gutted a fish with a knife that doesn't have that feature.
@envirosponsible It's like a little handle guard on each side of the tang where it meets the blade. The way you've designed your tool has this feature on the bottom side of the grip towards the blade; but there's not an equal or asymmetrical indent for guarding the the top of the hand from sliding forward. It would give your tool an excellent grip, securely saddling or locking the hand onto the handle. Think about how a bowie knife grip is set up, toned down & contoured into the tang. Like that.
Great Video and blade/tool design . Some of these comments have great ideas too . Special kind of breed knife folk are .
I agree nail puller should be in back [ less chance of blade damage ] , I might keep the upper serrations farther back to give a little space for batoning wood . 5/32 seems a little light for a tool of this caliber . Ya never know , might be a good step between ; machete , survival tool and sword . It ought to be cool.
@TexasPreppersNetwork Thanks. I'm not so sure about the thickness either, but like you said who knows. It could be good for this design. Yeah, the sawblade is going to take some consideration. It may be best to not have a saw at all.
I would love one of these it has everything I need including size. I know it might be a lot to ask but if u were to make one of these for me I'd be willing to pay 300$ contact me if you would like to talk business.
I suggest making the lanyard hole double as the nail pull in the tang end. Also, most car tires are steel belted, which means you'll bet getting pricked and bleeding by all those tiny steel wires sticking out.
Keep the edge between the tip and the saw flat, the reason for this is that you can use it as a draw knife so you can make bows. A draw knife needs two handles, hense the flat area between the tip and where the saw begins.
Ros arms makes a bush knife nearly identical to that. You might want to tweak it a bit though... only a little over $120. check it out under russian knives at world knives.
For that size the thickness of the blade will be pretty thin, but I think it is one sexy beast of a blade design. The nail pull is a bad idea on 5/32 steel but wouldn't compromise the structure of the blade in that location (*go for it). Can't wait to see the finished product.
get some micarta handles and that knife would be great, also i dont think the nail puller would be good, but thats a great design, cant wait to see the end product.
staying creative is such an important survival skill. regardless of how this particular project ends up, it's the nuturing of the creative spirit that will help one stay alive in a dicey situation. a really cool knife also helps.
i think the nail pull wont work very well because of the size of the tool. you wont be able to fit it into the spaces where you would get alot of use out of it.
Looks like an interesting project. I would be against the nail puller and perhaps the car tire handles. I think you will bend your blade before you pull the nails. The car tire I think will be quite uncomfortable to grasp depending how you place them on. I'm worried concerning the compromise on the 1 tool does it all kind of gear. Sacrifices are made as well a utility. Good luck. The finished project should be quite something
Forget the nail puller hole, for two reasons, you mentioned taking apart skids, you can not get those scew-nails out, even with a hammer and with the leverage that long handle with allow you would bend your blade in no time even trying to pull regular nails.
It's an interesting project and you have peeked my interest in what I might do with some of my old blades.
Have you thought of putting a 1 inch false edge on the back of the tip? It should help it dig but ifyou dont sharpen the false edge it should still be safe to use as a draw knife.
Also id make the tang sticking out the end taper to one side so that you could use it as a pry bar and id add a v noch to the pry bar like on a claw hammer to take out nails.
I have an idea for you. once you perfect this scan it into the computer in a full size pdf file with enstructions for fabrication and parts needed then post it in the description bar of the video you post when you show it off.
WE NEED THESE PLANS. We all see what is coming to this world, you can actually SAVE LIVES with stuff like this
How do you plan on doing the heat treat and soak on that knife? You will need a big oven for that process. Have you considered having your father in law machine clips into the back of the blade that will take commercial band saw, hack saw, and bone saw blades rather that try to put a saw back on it? Good luck with it!
Great mock up you have there, love to see the end product. Nail pull is a good idea put watch the placement, you don't want to be close to the knife point or edge. You can even copy a multi nut wrench design off some pocket tools The sighting tool marking might be a problem now that you added a knife point. Maybe add the same marking on the sheath, with access to the hole so you can use it safely the it on? I add a notch @ the base of the blade & hilt for a fire striker to round it off.

TacZakk1911 1 year ago
I hope it's not too late for this.
I would position the nail pull after construction so you can find the natural lift angle of the blade.
Bevel the back of the tip for better digging.
Double the handle length for two hands for dig leverage. You don't have a good hand position with the sawback to dig.
The bevel on the back of the tip would also give you a breaking wedge and a snake crusher.
That's a nice looking design. Got a little excited by that.
Not a fan of sawbacks. I'm too clumsy
