You could compare the Battle of Midway to the Battle of Britian very easily. Where was Britian at Midway? America was alone against Japan there. D-Day? You could compare Iwo Jima to it. We island hopped the Pacific. America launched landing operations and missions against Japan for air superiority and land from ships and carriers. My gripe is that the British act like America came in at the last minute, even though we were in the Pacific Since late 1941. It took all of us to win this.
You were not alone against the Japanese. The British, Australians and Chinese were fighting them too.
The British see that the Americans came in late to Europe, since they were there in 1939, with an expeditionary force dealing with the Germans, helping the French, as best we could. The reason the British are resentful, is that had the Americans joined in at that stage, things would have been over and done with far far sooner.

The Polish also contributed a lot. We fought to defend Britain and later we also aided in invading Germany on both the Western front (with America, Canada, and Britain) and the Eastern front (with the Russians). Also when Russia was entering Polish lands our gorillas made it so much easier for them to beat the Germans by disturbing the Germans movements, saving bridges from being blown up and so on. Only to be sold out by the Allies in the end.
British fought against Hitler's nazi when Hilter invaded Poland. Russa was not involved until Hilter broke a treaty with them and invaded them. The United States was not involved when British warred but they did make the M4 Sherman which UK did you against Hilter's tanks in the Deserts.

At the time when Poland was attacked by Germany all the British did was declare war on Germany with no action to follow up that declaration. Europe was lucky the Polish did not surrender like other countries before us, we gave the Germans many loses and because of that they had to put off invading other countries by many months which gave France and Britain time to prepare.

Here is the point you are ALL missing: America didn't NEED to help out Europe. Hitler posed absolutely NO danger to the US at the time. Germany couldn't pose a serious threat to sail across the Atlantic and invade the USA for another few decades. We would have been perfectly fine with just taking out Japan, but we did give Britain tons of ships, and ammunition under the "Lend Lease Act," without which, Britain could not have continued fighting the war.

And it would not have been "Sailing" the atlantic. Motorised vessels were fairly common by this stage. Also, if the Germans had defeated the UK, they would have then have had naval superiority in the eastern atlantic, meaning the US would have had naval war on two fronts.

I'm aware of all those interventions and don't necessarily agree with them all. But it's a strawman argument since we're talking about pre-superpower America circa 1939; the 'latecomer' argument came long before there was any thought of those interventions.
The point is not moot. The reasoning behind those interventions was the idea that they were the right thing to do. The same is true in the case of WW2. It was the right thing to do. The British could see that, even though the Nazis posed no direct threat to them (they did not plan to declare war on Britain) so why did not the Americans.

That isn't really the focus of this debate. And for the record, the US did not do 80% of the fighting on the Pacific front, it was more like 50% in that yes, you had Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other areas, but you seem to forget that the British were fighting the Japanese in Singapore and all across south Eastern Asia. Through India and the Russians were fighting them in Manchuria.
I know were the Brits were fighting a know a hell of a lot about WW2.

China did NOT do more against the Japanese than the British. The British fought against them in Singapore, Thailand, India, Malaysia...all across the SE-Asian area. China did not do nearly as much.

You could compare the Battle of Midway to the Battle of Britian very easily. Where was Britian at Midway? America was alone against Japan there. D-Day? You could compare Iwo Jima to it. We island hopped the Pacific. America launched landing operations and missions against Japan for air superiority and land from ships and carriers. My gripe is that the British act like America came in at the last minute, even though we were in the Pacific Since late 1941. It took all of us to win this.

The British see that the Americans came in late to Europe, since they were there in 1939, with an expeditionary force dealing with the Germans, helping the French, as best we could. The reason the British are resentful, is that had the Americans joined in at that stage, things would have been over and done with far far sooner.

What about the Canadian Corp., we had the most elite soldiers of WW1 and WW2. We had more soliders per civilian in our country then the US, we pushed in the deepest into France on D-Day, and in BOTH wars, we where used for capturing areas now one other country could have, INCLUDING the US, Briten or France. The Polish also contributed a lot. We fought to defend Britain and later we also aided in invading Germany on both the Western front (with America, Canada, and Britain) and the Eastern front (with the Russians). Also when Russia was entering Polish lands our gorillas made it so much easier for them to beat the Germans by disturbing the Germans movements, saving bridges from being blown up and so on. Only to be sold out by the Allies in the end.

At the time when Poland was attacked by Germany all the British did was declare war on Germany with no action to follow up that declaration. Europe was lucky the Polish did not surrender like other countries before us, we gave the Germans many loses and because of that they had to put off invading other countries by many months which gave France and Britain time to prepare.

Erm, no. Without the USSR, the UK and US would have been unable to launch a sucessful attack against the Nazis. The same without the UK, the US would have been incapable. Also, the UK defended itself very well without the US, thank you.

Here is the point you are ALL missing: America didn't NEED to help out Europe. Hitler posed absolutely NO danger to the US at the time. Germany couldn't pose a serious threat to sail across the Atlantic and invade the USA for another few decades. We would have been perfectly fine with just taking out Japan, but we did give Britain tons of ships, and ammunition under the "Lend Lease Act," without which, Britain could not have continued fighting the war.

Erm, yes you did. The US would no longer have had anyone to trade with in Europe, thats a pretty big deal. Also, the Germans were in the Atlantic, the U-Boats were sinking American PASSANGER SHIPS. And it would not have been "Sailing" the atlantic. Motorised vessels were fairly common by this stage. Also, if the Germans had defeated the UK, they would have then have had naval superiority in the eastern atlantic, meaning the US would have had naval war on two fronts.

here we go with the nukes; German documents show that the Germans had a nuke program of their own from 1939 and nearly had it ready up until the scientists working on it where captured and funding started to go down to build more tanks for the front.

five of my uncles went over seas all five came home , they all fought hard and respected the allied forces and four of them fought under the canadian flag as part of the common wealth ,,, but i think we have a distorted veiw because the U.S. really did nt enter the war fully and what i mean is while in canada was giving its all , America wasnt really taking the war seriously, until late in the war ,,, and then came pearl harbour ,, but i get what your saying

I actually think either the UK/Russia, or US/Russia both could have beaten the Germans. All the Russians needed was support in the way of supplies etc.
Once the Russians beat Germany, by default they take the rest of Western Europe. So, all 3 were necessary to prevent Russian domination of Europe.

all they did was capture a bunch of conscripts and go on a land grabbing spree, only reason the U.S got them in to the theater was for man power. Russians kept refusing to open up the Pacific front till July of 1945

I don't think so. They would have had to invade from hundruds of miles away. The floating docks wouldn't have happened, along with many other instances. And the British forces constituted a huge segment of the invasion force which the Americans would most likely have been unable to fully replace.

The British who insist that Americans were 'latecomers' to the war need to explain to us why we were OBLIGATED to sacrifice on your behalf come Sept. of '39.
We have never been a Commonwealth nation (though a colony way back when) so, while Aus/NZ/Can/India and other colonies were oh so happy to sacrifice their blood, us Yanks wonder why you assume that you could take us for granted?

I dont know, maybe because it was THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Regardless of who founded you, the idea of the ammount of suffering the Nazis were causing and the invasion of France etc should have inspired you to act. It inspired Britain to act and the Nazis were not directly threatening us. They would have been happy to just leave us alone. We declared war on them. If we were able to act selflessly to stop them, why couldn't you.

There was a big chunk of the world who were 'latecomers' or complete no shows so why not the USA also? you have to understand that even though the USA is a majority white population (more so then than now) we DO NOT identify ourselves as Europeans, so we didn't feel an overwhelming need to help your continent out.

The point is not moot. The reasoning behind those interventions was the idea that they were the right thing to do. The same is true in the case of WW2. It was the right thing to do. The British could see that, even though the Nazis posed no direct threat to them (they did not plan to declare war on Britain) so why did not the Americans.

that is true, tucsonia, also the japs where are main enemy not the Germans it was the British who wanted us in the European area same in WW1 we got dragged in.
Also the Russians are back stabers they worked with the Germans in 1939 and invaded Finland in 1940.
also this vid only talk about the euro front, there is a front called the Pacific front which the U.S was carrying about 80% of the fight to the Japs. something I noticed a lot of Euro's seem to forget.

That isn't really the focus of this debate. And for the record, the US did not do 80% of the fighting on the Pacific front, it was more like 50% in that yes, you had Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other areas, but you seem to forget that the British were fighting the Japanese in Singapore and all across south Eastern Asia. Through India and the Russians were fighting them in Manchuria.

China did NOT do more against the Japanese than the British. The British fought against them in Singapore, Thailand, India, Malaysia...all across the SE-Asian area. China did not do nearly as much.
There was a surrender, doesn't mean there wasn't fighting. And it was more than just a "large skirmish".
