Back in the day, there were first 4 Chaos Emeralds, then six, and then the seven we know today. It's possible today's green emerald was once "the chaos emerald of life", but somehow lost its power. A lot of the current stuff wasn't in existence yet. For example, Sonic could swim.

Notice how Sonic's ancestor's plane was shot down. Also, he was wearing a German Pickelhaube helmet and he was flying a Bi-plane which was common during WWI, however Grounders relative is a WWII era tank, this timeline is inaccurate but then again, it is a cartoon.
