And it's scarcity is what makes all the old Kings of Blues so great. They possessed it in great amounts.
@smcphie The old Kings of Blues may have had the "soul" part down, but I can guarantee you they would be astonished at the chops all these white boys have cultivated. The old black guys were busy playing poorly tuned acoustic guitars and could not have imagined the manner in which fellows like Lane could play. Had he lived, Hendrix himself would have been stunned at the greats of today...
Hes soloing on a tune called "The Kings Letter" from Time Is The Enemy, a Jonas Hellborg album featuring Shawn Lane (obviously) and Jeff Sipe. The gig is at some percussion store in Atlanta, I'm pretty sure.
I really fail to see that this guy is the fastest... I fail to see how amazing people say he is. I mean what the fuck? Steve Vai would completely mangle Shawn any day. Seriously, it's just painful to hear somebody say that Shawn lane "kills him hands down". Ugh

@TheBoilerman1 At last years london guitar show, Steve Vai arranged Guthrie Govan to be busy during Steve's guitar duels so he wouldn't have to face him lol
@ReadThisurDUMB shawn lane clearly was faster and absolutely more technical if you want proof there is a gig where vai was so impressed he stopped playing and took a camera from someone in the audience and filmed shawn
@zubestr Yes. But let me assure you, he was also the worlds best alternate picker. Watch some of his technique videos and he demonstrates both, and mixtures of the two.
maybe NOT 30, but shawn lane himself came close to achieving that. I think he has something like 24 notes or so per second. A perfect example of that would have to be the last 4 mins of not again.

He started off young like most people who play really fast (Buckethead, Paul Gilbert, etc.) and worked on it.
The key to being fast is to start off slow and get control over your fingers. Another main point is to be calm. Your playing should be smooth. That's why you see people who go that fast are usually REALLY focused.
Metronomes are VERY helpful for practicing on speed. Spider exercises help your fingers build speed too.
I never implied that Shawn started off slow. Also, I never said that you couldn't get fast from masturbating your frets, but if you get the motion down you don't have to worry about cleaning.
I did the same with piano by going fast before playing clean. Trust me, it truly frustrates you. Hard on the ears of people around you too.
I recommend starting off slow to develop good technique. It's not all about who is fast, it's all about who plays well. Shawn happened to have the full package.
I didn't want to say "frets", but in order to say what I wanted to say and to keep it under the 500 word limit I used frets.
I meant to say fretboard. And I figured all those who can put 2 and 2 together would know what was implied without any questions...
As for "masturbating your frets"...
In classical guitar, the usual way to get vibrato is to pull the string back and forth instead of bending up and down. I guess that is "fret masturbation".
@Esuohretep Shawn said that was something he did to fragment the process of starting slow and getting faster. Slow practice is very very important. :)
@Esuohretep I think shawn lane was nothing like 99% of the common guitar players. He was probably never even THAT sloppy as a kid, and more then likely didn't work at his speed. He was gifted, it was just there...and luckily for him, he was able to focus on things besides playing 520349324 NPS totally clean.
@BrianGuitarShred well also in that interview he said that he would play, for example, a 120 bpm piece at 160 bpm or more after he had practiced it slowly before that just so he didn't get stuck in a rut for lack of a better term
@WastedRespect By gifted, I don't mean god touched his hands when he was born into the world. It's actually scientifically proven that some people have access to parts of the brain we don't, and not every human body on the earth is created equally. Some people are born capable of understanding things you or me will never understand, and vice versa for us. Shawn's nervous system was probably also freakish -- watch his wrist move.
That's a gift, even if it may just be an accident of genetics.
@Esuohretep that's how i do it! xD mostly because i don't have the willpower to slow down and actually work on my technique. But who needs technique when you're playing so fast that bum notes aren't really noticeable =P
@Esuohretep Whats funny, is thats the same method I've learned by.
I've been playing 3 years, and I can sweep. I'm not saying I'm really great, but I can play pretty quick and clean, and really good for my time. [in a non arrogant way]
So I think this method works well, but depends on the person I suppose.
I love MANY guitarists that includes: Robert Fripp, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Buckethead, Jimi Hendrix, Shawn Lane, David Gilmour, Amrik, Frank Zappa, Eddie Hazel, Steve Howe, Jeff Beck, John Frusciante, John Petrucci, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Al di Meola, Alvin Lee, and so many more.
I don't know how you dickheads can pick a "best". You guys just sound dumb. Why don't you tell me who is best when you listen to every guitarist in history?!
Thanks, it's good to know that others feel the same. Every guitarist I named has amazing music.
I can appreciate Robert Fripp for his expressive and artistic playing, and at the same time appreciate someone like Shawn Lane that has amazing speed, tone, and master melodies. Then, I can agree that gutarists like David Gilmour and Eddie Hazel could paint entire landscapes with a good amount of notes, fair amount of effects, and a whammy bar.
I think when you reach the leval that Govan and Lane have, you really cannot seperate the two. Just aggree that there both the best to ever pick up the instrament and enjoy there awsome music
@almostsk8er01 vigier guitars have a really unique 0 radius fretboard. One day i want to play one. But they are VERY expensive. But shawn does swear they are the best guitars ever made.
you know buckethead sucks ass if youy compare into a master like shawn lane its awful that a god like him died i bet he would be the best guitarist now :(
"he plays good but..." - you must be kidding - Shawn was one of the finest musicians who ever lived!!! We are so lucky to have so much video of him to learn from. The guy was SO free musically it was awesome to watch

I did the same with piano by going fast before playing clean. Trust me, it truly frustrates you. Hard on the ears of people around you too.
I recommend starting off slow to develop good technique. It's not all about who is fast, it's all about who plays well. Shawn happened to have the full package.

How is "Masturbating" your frets even possible?....
OstentatiousTyler 1 year ago 37
I didn't want to say "frets", but in order to say what I wanted to say and to keep it under the 500 word limit I used frets.
I meant to say fretboard. And I figured all those who can put 2 and 2 together would know what was implied without any questions...
As for "masturbating your frets"...
In classical guitar, the usual way to get vibrato is to pull the string back and forth instead of bending up and down. I guess that is "fret masturbation".

@OstentatiousTyler ....with imagination.

@OstentatiousTyler Well, this video is a pretty good how-to on just that subject.

@OstentatiousTyler i don't know. but i "jizz in my pants" every time he plays those super fast licks
ghostfacedude93 1 year ago
@OstentatiousTyler lol, I'd ask the master of fret masterbation...Mr. Steve Vai!. He always rubs his vibratos like a delicate sex organ.

@OstentatiousTyler Simple. Be Shawn Lane.
bearfeymous 1 year ago
I like that way instead of starting slow, well it works with me.
lordhalo1605 1 year ago 2
@Esuohretep Shawn said that was something he did to fragment the process of starting slow and getting faster. Slow practice is very very important. :)

@Esuohretep thats what i do too!
BananaRelapse 1 year ago
@Esuohretep I think shawn lane was nothing like 99% of the common guitar players. He was probably never even THAT sloppy as a kid, and more then likely didn't work at his speed. He was gifted, it was just there...and luckily for him, he was able to focus on things besides playing 520349324 NPS totally clean.
BrianGuitarShred 1 year ago 2
@BrianGuitarShred well also in that interview he said that he would play, for example, a 120 bpm piece at 160 bpm or more after he had practiced it slowly before that just so he didn't get stuck in a rut for lack of a better term
guitarslasher3100 1 year ago
@BrianGuitarShred no such thing as gifted. Just a romantic philosophy given to idiots so that there will be more idiots and less smart people.
WastedRespect 1 year ago
@WastedRespect By gifted, I don't mean god touched his hands when he was born into the world. It's actually scientifically proven that some people have access to parts of the brain we don't, and not every human body on the earth is created equally. Some people are born capable of understanding things you or me will never understand, and vice versa for us. Shawn's nervous system was probably also freakish -- watch his wrist move.
That's a gift, even if it may just be an accident of genetics.
BrianGuitarShred 1 year ago
@Esuohretep that's how i do it! xD mostly because i don't have the willpower to slow down and actually work on my technique. But who needs technique when you're playing so fast that bum notes aren't really noticeable =P
CyValkarion 1 year ago
@Esuohretep Whats funny, is thats the same method I've learned by.
I've been playing 3 years, and I can sweep. I'm not saying I'm really great, but I can play pretty quick and clean, and really good for my time. [in a non arrogant way]
So I think this method works well, but depends on the person I suppose.
MattiasOfTheMetal 1 year ago 4
@Esuohretep he was already pretty damn clean to start with.
CyValkarion 1 year ago
@Esuohretep your thumbs are ill deserved... he was clean at age 10...

Arguing who is better than who is dumb.
BigTymerPimp 2 years ago 2
@BigTymerPimp
i agree with you
VanishingDigital 2 years ago
Thanks, it's good to know that others feel the same. Every guitarist I named has amazing music.
I can appreciate Robert Fripp for his expressive and artistic playing, and at the same time appreciate someone like Shawn Lane that has amazing speed, tone, and master melodies. Then, I can agree that gutarists like David Gilmour and Eddie Hazel could paint entire landscapes with a good amount of notes, fair amount of effects, and a whammy bar.
There is no "best" as far as I know.
BigTymerPimp 2 years ago
I think when you reach the leval that Govan and Lane have, you really cannot seperate the two. Just aggree that there both the best to ever pick up the instrament and enjoy there awsome music

is it just me or is his fretboard like extremely flat?
almostsk8er01 2 years ago
@almostsk8er01 vigier guitars have a really unique 0 radius fretboard. One day i want to play one. But they are VERY expensive. But shawn does swear they are the best guitars ever made.
TheWhocares233 2 years ago
I believe it's completely flat
