  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus

  • I saw him play live in the ninetees, he has relatively small hands for a guitar god.

  • I don't know if you guys noticed, but that has to be the FLATTEST fretboard I have ever seen.

  • @murphxedge That's because it is perfectly flat.

  • @DaKewlGuy1234 Is there a benefit to that?

  • @murphxedge Some people think it enables faster play, but its really just a preference thing.

  • Shawn was able to mix impossible speed with great songwriting and soul. RIP

  • what in the world?

  • My porn paused itself for this.

  • The undisputed king of guitar. The strongest left hand of all time. THE MEMPHIS MONSTER!

  • fuckin monster

  • fuck, there is not enough footage of shawn lane on youtube.

  • This has too much emotion for me to call him a robot.

  • @AbnormalImagery

the only one who can compete with shawn lane alternate picking in IMO john mclaughlin

  • I haven't seen this one and it's got a bit of a shawn-playing-some-eric johnson-inspired-licks feel to it. (not in a rip off way, just a bit of a melodic homage) really freaking amazing in every way

  • 8 people wanted to see the face but didn't until 1:29!

  • good god damn

  • jesus. i just found out about him. he is amazing. who is he? like what type of music is he? and no haters

  • @LesPaul4444 Jazz Fusion. He was (he died in 2003) a very talented guitarist. He, I won't argue this point as this is my opinion, was truly the most technically accomplished guitar to ever live. Look at his videos "Power Solos" and "Power Licks". He also has two solo albums, a live album and a plethora of other material with other artists. The youtube User MyShawnLaneVideos is his sister and she has a huge collection of material uploaded to youtube.

  • @danukenator123 Respectively, I wouldn't call it jazz fusion (even though Shawn loved the genre) Shawn was a fusion of many things and he didn't really specialize in any one discipline. He just owned the guitar, technically and physically (and with a great ear) in such a way that allowed him to navigate many waters. In a word, he was/is UNIQUE.

  • @Composer19691 I just going with what Shawn himself said. (The video is called "Shawn Lane talks about Paul Gilbert")

  • @danukenator123 thanks bud

  • @LesPaul4444 Jazz fusion, like danukenator said, but in the later years of his life he was very much influenced by traditional Indian music.

  • is he using a pick?

  • its gods theme song as he is coming down the stairs from heaven, but wait... shawn lane is god. nobody is even in this fuckers league

  • FAT FUCK

  • @ARAGORN41 Just reminding you you are a retard who'll never accomplish anything remotely similar to Shawn Lane.

  • @54NT14G0 I'm obviously a much better guitarist that that fat bastard.

  • @ARAGORN41 Your hair is orange! And your skin is pink!

You're slow, sloppy and often neglect to use your pinky...

which looks like it got broke 4 times!!! You called him fat so I'll call you

    PINK and ORANGE!!!

  • @oilkills

    He's a ginger.

  • @Morenumbers123456789 Oh Right! So he has no soul. LMAO!

  • @oilkills

    Lol! Exactly.

  • @ARAGORN41

I'd rather be a "FAT FUCK" that can play the guitar instead of some fail GINGER like you who sucks at it. But still you upload videos of yourself that you should be ashamed of.

  • Fuck this shit G! It's Shawn -- MOTHER FUCKIN' -- Lane showing us mere mortals what can be accomplished on a STRAT!!! God bless you Shawn! I'm reasonably sure there will never be another player of your CALIBER again on this Earth plane!

  • He incorporates so many styles into his playing. It's unreal.

  • Wow. Surprisingly this is one SL clip that sounds really good.

  • @fishqwer what?

  • pure noise!!

  • @vinnothelizard

Umm, no.. This is noise /watch?v=A7Vv1WzubHg

  • I'm going to be faster than him one day >:I

  • @TheFernodragon speed is not everything unless your name is tiago della vega

  • he just ripped that guitars asshole apart

  • A True Master !!!!! PERIOD.

  • God damn, I hope he bought those pentatonic runs dinner before he did that to them.

  • Best i ever heard him

  • Shawn Lane, the sweetest kindest person that ever lived, and the biggest mass raping brutal molester of the guitar neck in history haha, what a fucking legend...

  • BEST! guitarist ever!.

  • It's like S.R.V. power and something else driving him to go FASTER! love it:)

  • Someone take that guitar to a doctor because Shawn just raped it.

  • So clean and tight...

  • He was better in his short life than anyone who has lived out their full life. RIP Shawn, Thank you for your influence on the world of music.

  • im came onto this link to see what his fingers were doing, and i got distracted by the awesomeness of his music and forgot why i watched it R.I.P Shawn

  • grandissimo shawn lane, uno dei più impressionanti chitarristi mai vissuti sul nostro pianeta...

  • flat fingerboard ,rare.

  • @endrizo correct me if im wrong but isn't this one a 16" radius, which is pretty damn flat but i mean without a radius at all you risk actual concave points that will kill notes in an instant

  • @mlgudead ,as far as I can see, this one is perfect flat, just as classic spanish guitars´ and NO you don´t risk anything, good old Shawn knows ,he liked them,I just said that a flat fingerboard is very rare in an electric guitar,,it feels strange on the hand at first but it sure enables fast fingering haha, see you pal

  • @endrizo very cool, thanks for the education :)

  • @endrizo I was just noticing that neck. Like you said, it's super flat like a nylon string acoustic. I'd like to try a neck like that someday.

  • This is shredding + super dirty blues licks at the same time + the best band to imagine as a backup for it.

  • he plays more notes in this clip than i can in a week, awesome

  • Too bad the recording sucks - you cannot hear much of what he's playing. Also, the video technique has a rather cool impact on his speed playing...

  • Here is the video of the complete song. it's a D Minor improv that Jonas Hellborg started. youtube.com/watch?v=E46OrveaN_g

  • @mahavishnujoel Great key recognition, However, your link failed me, i was thoroughly disappointed.

  • @DAKMAIN type in " Lane, Hellborg , Sipe" and it will be the one that says improv and its like 9:24 long I think

  • what song is this?!?! pleease!!!!

  • Saw him live in a small club in the nineties, I sat like 3 meters away from him and did not know who he was and that he was famous. While this is not completely my stile of music, his virtousity made me speechless. I still regret that I did not talk to him after the concert, there would have been an opportunity to say hello.

  • Is this from a certain song? If it is please let me know.

  • So clean

  • if you play the section between 0:46 to 0:57 a few times, and you'll realise, like i did, that shawns playing is just fucking incredible. there are no gimmics here - no fans on stage, no laser show, no fancy costume, just guitar playing. This shit is REAL.

  • @jimmychungas how about the section from 0:00 to 1:30? hahah. its amazing. if i can play this minute and a half long piece on the guitar I will be satisfied with my guitar playing forever haha

  • @jimmychungas more like 0:00-1:30

  • Comment removed

  • I got to meet and talk to Shawn, and he let me play his guitar, and it was damn near impossible for me to play. The action is SOO LOW he was the only person that could play it.

  • I Just cant stop lauphing at al these posts. hay kids, speed is the easy thing. sole is whats hard. hes a great player but enouph knocking down the old blues guys. you simply do not understand.

  • @GUITARJEREMY1 He played with speed AND soul. I wouldn't call speed "the easy thing" it takes time and discipline. What I think is so neat about soul is that it seems to be something you have or you don't. Sure you can nourish it, but there's not really any teaching it. And it's scarcity is what makes all the old Kings of Blues so great. They possessed it in great amounts.

  • @smcphie The old Kings of Blues may have had the "soul" part down, but I can guarantee you they would be astonished at the chops all these white boys have cultivated. The old black guys were busy playing poorly tuned acoustic guitars and could not have imagined the manner in which fellows like Lane could play. Had he lived, Hendrix himself would have been stunned at the greats of today...

  • Omg, did anyone saw this? SRV spirit got into shawn and made a perfect mix!

  • HOLY SH---*Computer Crashes*

My Windows 7 couldnt even keep up at how awesome this is

  • Hey Shawn you were master, thank you for legacy of your great music!

  • I think i just got carpal tunnel just from watching this....

  • I know more about this gig. I would've been 100000000 times more epic than a 90 sec video of it.

  • The radius on his fretboard looks dead flat.

  • That technique is perfect!

  • is that a suhr!?

  • @superagnitio

It's a Vigier Excalibur Shawn Lane Master signature. :)

  • @superagnitio

Says right there on the headstock.

  • i'd love to get his muting technique to keep those strings quiet while jibbing so hard like that ha

  • I'm pretty sure it's from the show at Atlanta D&P on Aug. 19th 1996.

  • The best to ever touch the instrument, in my opinion. RIP Mr. Lane.

  • Whoever shot this Video did a Great Job!!

  • @obmagenocide

    Thanks!

  • Bravo! Awsome playing. R.I.P.

  • How he Die?

  • yeah....yngwie is in a different plane of existance than shawn...love yngwie...but..damn...shawn SHREDS...from all angles...

  • What song is this?

  • holy crap, i dno how you could "clean it up" if you just went flat out b4 trying it slowly....

  • Hes soloing on a tune called "The Kings Letter" from Time Is The Enemy, a Jonas Hellborg album featuring Shawn Lane (obviously) and Jeff Sipe. The gig is at some percussion store in Atlanta, I'm pretty sure.

  • And the guy is FAT. O_o

  • Shawn lane sucks. I really don't see how he is so fast. show me a video proving that he is stupidly fast, seriously.

  • @ReadThisurDUMB

you embarass yourself with every negative post. it's obvious you are quite young and have been raised on crap music.

  • @TheBoilerman1 lol, you are so dumb. if any of you fools actually take me seriously then you are just mentaly ill. shawn lane is a god at guitar.

  • @ReadThisurDUMB Watch Lane playing a song call "Not Again" live - in the second half of the video he lets rip.

  • @tudortoomey the secons half of that video is disgusting. Its even better if you watch the HD version.

  • NOOOO!! *throws guitar out of window and crushes old lady and cat* I WILL NEVER BE THIS GOOD!!!

  • I really fail to see that this guy is the fastest... I fail to see how amazing people say he is. I mean what the fuck? Steve Vai would completely mangle Shawn any day. Seriously, it's just painful to hear somebody say that Shawn lane "kills him hands down". Ugh

  • @ReadThisurDUMB This is a joke right?

  • @ReadThisurDUMB steve vai would mangle shawn lane?????????? wow are you dense. steve isn't even in shawn's league.

  • @TheBoilerman1 Yup, Steve has even said that he isn't a shredder. Well, it's a bit of a lie, but it's that he ain't the fastest.

  • @TheBoilerman1 Not in pure alternate picking but overall use of the guitar, tapping , tremolo bar effects yes.

It depends on what the context is. For that matter Govan could mangle lane and vai too if ur talking overall technical mastery of the instrument.

  • @chillichomper

with respect, i strongly disagreee. i love guthrie but can't stand vai and his conceit. neither would ever claim to be shawn's equal. guthrie has plenty of shawn's dvds. why don't you ask him? go ahead.

  • @TheBoilerman1 you aware of what a troll is? all the people that keep on replying to my obviously sarcastic comments, you are just embarrassing yourself.

  • @TheBoilerman1 At last years london guitar show, Steve Vai arranged Guthrie Govan to be busy during Steve's guitar duels so he wouldn't have to face him lol

  • @ReadThisurDUMB ...have you gone through his whole catalogue of music? have you listened to all of his albums? all the videos?

  • @ReadThisurDUMB shawn lane clearly was faster and absolutely more technical if you want proof there is a gig where vai was so impressed he stopped playing and took a camera from someone in the audience and filmed shawn

  • His divine guitar prowess stems only from the seed of God himself. His fingers just beat the land speed record!

  • 0:24...........i should throw all of my guitars away and just quit right now

  • Barua A Soldani!!! great tune!!! one of my favorites!!

  • Is he mostly a legato player

  • @zubestr Yes. But let me assure you, he was also the worlds best alternate picker. Watch some of his technique videos and he demonstrates both, and mixtures of the two.

But to put it simply, he used a lot of legato.

  • oh my GOD

  • shawn lane ,frank gambale y paco de lucia son insuperables antes ahora y despues ,a practicar

  • david guilmur quien es un futbolista

  • David Gilmour actually picked 30nps at the age of 16, but his wrist was badly damaged so he decided to never play fast again.

  • @francisco444 wtf are you talking about, do you know what you said? 30 notes per second is not possible

  • haha, depends on the tempo. defiantely a slow one.

  • Your thinking about 30 notes per beat^... per second is not possible...

  • maybe NOT 30, but shawn lane himself came close to achieving that. I think he has something like 24 notes or so per second. A perfect example of that would have to be the last 4 mins of not again.

  • yeah shawn was absolutely the fastest when it comes to nps the only guys i can name who come close at speeds that high cleanly are guthrie govan and marshall harrison guthrie writes great stuff but not like shawn lane and marshall is an amazing technician but i just don't hear any amazing compositions from him he'd be an amazing teacher though he does all those shawn laneisms

  • and a ton of allan holdsworth stuff too forgot to mention him too holdsworth was one of lanes big influences

  • yeah man definately.

  • @francisco444 Thank god he did! he's heart breaking at a slow pace, any faster would be soul destroying

  • How is it possible to even move your fingers that fast Rip Mr lane we miss thee and you are a true inspiration as your guitar playing wil live on.

  • A big thanks to whoever filmed this. Excellent focus on his hands!

  • how can someone be that fast at guitar?

  • Practice, dedication, and a love for music.

He started off young like most people who play really fast (Buckethead, Paul Gilbert, etc.) and worked on it.

The key to being fast is to start off slow and get control over your fingers. Another main point is to be calm. Your playing should be smooth. That's why you see people who go that fast are usually REALLY focused.

Metronomes are VERY helpful for practicing on speed. Spider exercises help your fingers build speed too.

  • Thanks for the tips. :)

  • uh, actually lane said himself that he would go as fast as he could and then work on cleaning it up, as opposed to starting slow and getting faster.

  • I never implied that Shawn started off slow. Also, I never said that you couldn't get fast from masturbating your frets, but if you get the motion down you don't have to worry about cleaning.

I did the same with piano by going fast before playing clean. Trust me, it truly frustrates you. Hard on the ears of people around you too.

I recommend starting off slow to develop good technique. It's not all about who is fast, it's all about who plays well. Shawn happened to have the full package.

  • How is "Masturbating" your frets even possible?....

  • I didn't want to say "frets", but in order to say what I wanted to say and to keep it under the 500 word limit I used frets.

I meant to say fretboard. And I figured all those who can put 2 and 2 together would know what was implied without any questions...

    As for "masturbating your frets"...

In classical guitar, the usual way to get vibrato is to pull the string back and forth instead of bending up and down. I guess that is "fret masturbation".

  • @OstentatiousTyler ....with imagination.

  • @OstentatiousTyler Well, this video is a pretty good how-to on just that subject.

  • @OstentatiousTyler It's called a metaphor.

  • @OstentatiousTyler Idk watch the video and learn how..?

  • @OstentatiousTyler i don't know. but i "jizz in my pants" every time he plays those super fast licks

  • @OstentatiousTyler lol, I'd ask the master of fret masterbation...Mr. Steve Vai!. He always rubs his vibratos like a delicate sex organ.

  • @OstentatiousTyler Simple. Be Shawn Lane.

  • I like that way instead of starting slow, well it works with me.

  • @Esuohretep Shawn said that was something he did to fragment the process of starting slow and getting faster. Slow practice is very very important. :)

  • @Esuohretep thats what i do too!

  • @Esuohretep I think shawn lane was nothing like 99% of the common guitar players. He was probably never even THAT sloppy as a kid, and more then likely didn't work at his speed. He was gifted, it was just there...and luckily for him, he was able to focus on things besides playing 520349324 NPS totally clean.

  • @BrianGuitarShred well also in that interview he said that he would play, for example, a 120 bpm piece at 160 bpm or more after he had practiced it slowly before that just so he didn't get stuck in a rut for lack of a better term

  • @BrianGuitarShred no such thing as gifted. Just a romantic philosophy given to idiots so that there will be more idiots and less smart people.

  • @WastedRespect By gifted, I don't mean god touched his hands when he was born into the world. It's actually scientifically proven that some people have access to parts of the brain we don't, and not every human body on the earth is created equally. Some people are born capable of understanding things you or me will never understand, and vice versa for us. Shawn's nervous system was probably also freakish -- watch his wrist move.

That's a gift, even if it may just be an accident of genetics.

  • @Esuohretep that's how i do it! xD mostly because i don't have the willpower to slow down and actually work on my technique. But who needs technique when you're playing so fast that bum notes aren't really noticeable =P

  • @Esuohretep Whats funny, is thats the same method I've learned by.

I've been playing 3 years, and I can sweep. I'm not saying I'm really great, but I can play pretty quick and clean, and really good for my time. [in a non arrogant way]

So I think this method works well, but depends on the person I suppose.

  • @Esuohretep he was already pretty damn clean to start with.

  • @Esuohretep your thumbs are ill deserved... he was clean at age 10...

  • This is Shawn at about 25% of his speed range

  • @Kingding6 Shit,but this still very impressive!

  • I agree with you 100% BigTymerPimp.

  • Arguing who is better than who is dumb.

I love MANY guitarists that includes: Robert Fripp, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Buckethead, Jimi Hendrix, Shawn Lane, David Gilmour, Amrik, Frank Zappa, Eddie Hazel, Steve Howe, Jeff Beck, John Frusciante, John Petrucci, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Al di Meola, Alvin Lee, and so many more.

I don't know how you dickheads can pick a "best". You guys just sound dumb. Why don't you tell me who is best when you listen to every guitarist in history?!

  • @BigTymerPimp

    i agree with you

  • Thanks, it's good to know that others feel the same. Every guitarist I named has amazing music.

I can appreciate Robert Fripp for his expressive and artistic playing, and at the same time appreciate someone like Shawn Lane that has amazing speed, tone, and master melodies. Then, I can agree that gutarists like David Gilmour and Eddie Hazel could paint entire landscapes with a good amount of notes, fair amount of effects, and a whammy bar.

There is no "best" as far as I know.

  • I think when you reach the leval that Govan and Lane have, you really cannot seperate the two. Just aggree that there both the best to ever pick up the instrament and enjoy there awsome music

  • how many frets has this guitar?

  • The Vigier Excalibur Shawn Lane Signature model has 24 frets. Vigier's website has all the specs if you want to know more. :)

  • 24 frets

  • looks like 24

  • is it just me or is his fretboard like extremely flat?

  • @almostsk8er01 vigier guitars have a really unique 0 radius fretboard. One day i want to play one. But they are VERY expensive. But shawn does swear they are the best guitars ever made.

  • I believe it's completely flat

  • you know buckethead sucks ass if youy compare into a master like shawn lane its awful that a god like him died i bet he would be the best guitarist now :(

  • @kajari115 how does buckethead suck?

    exactly. he doesn't.

  • xxxrickyxxx = a stupid muther fucker

  • "he plays good but..." - you must be kidding - Shawn was one of the finest musicians who ever lived!!! We are so lucky to have so much video of him to learn from. The guy was SO free musically it was awesome to watch
