This is why i Star Trek never really interested me. Most of their space battle sequences where real cheesy. Star wars always had superior space battles even in the 70's. Now serenity had a pretty epic short space/atmospheric battle (hence you see no stars) it somewhat reminded me of Revenge of the Sith.
Another thing that i have to say, what their doing with Star Trek now a days on the big screen is magnificent. I loved the movie 100 times. But i never occurred to me to actually get into it.
I liked the composition and timing of the clips to the music, but changing everything to 4:3 aspect ratio was a bad idea. Nearly all the modern TV shows, and all the movies, looked squished sideways to me, and even the DS9 bits looked off. Other than that, it was a great clip.
@uBrosis Try to find an option called "preserve aspect ratio" in the settings, that will force the program to avoid stretching the image (stretching is bad, use letterboxing instead, or crop if you have to). If you can't find anything like that, then change the output to a widescreen resolution like 640x360, or 854x480 - this will stretch the narrow clips and make them wider, but that's easier on the eyes for some technical reason.
@uBrosis (cont.) Or, your input video files were already squished up, which means it wasn't your fault except for having picked fubared sources. :) Would you mind terribly if I tried my hand at remaking this? Same shots, same music, same timing, just higher resolution and no stretching? Would just take me some time to assemble decent sources....
Yes! Well fucking done. I just watched a video of a dude wearing a doll mask and dressed in a leotard, and this blew that horrible memory away with explosive laser business. Fuckin' A dude. I love space battles. Great music choice too, the kind of music that really sells the experience, you get 1 billion internets for not using requiem for a dream or some shit, or goddamn woah woah rock.
Babylon 5 is my favorite for the sheer scale of their battles, not to mention that they were one of the first to show semi-realistic space flight (unlike stuff like Star Wars that was modeled after WW2 fighters and battleships). If you don't agree with me, I suggest you be somewhere else.
this video is made of pure awesomeness and epicness. I know it has nothing to do with reality (how do they turn their crafts without side thrusters? and why do they use engines all the time, when there's no friction in the vacuum so they're only wasting fuel?), but it still kicks ass.
How many decorated cupcakes can you put on a buffet table?Joss Whedon made only one mistake; he didn't use any sound fx in his space battles. In reality you can't do barrel rolls or u-turns in a vacuum... but using aerial combat is like the sexiest movement for 'dog fighting' space craft.
What amazes me is that Return of the Jedi looks pretty good even when you compare it to the more recent CGI stuff. I dare say that it looks better than some of the newer stuff.
@darkelfcoldoneknight Yeah it's quite amazing what they managed to do with a bunch of filmed models (not sure if they changed anything in the battle scenes in the newer versions of the SW movies... and I can't remember what version I used for this movie ^^;), these days everything is just CG :/
i always thought the starfighters were flying a lot faster but the jedi starfighters over coruscant were only going at around 900kph (they fly across the length of a resucant destroyer in 5 seconds which is roughly 1.200m long)
I have to admit something. Firefly or Serenity on the big screen had an impressive space battle. All that flying and the guy who piloted and married a black woman who was played by Gina Torres got impaled in the end. Sad ending he had.
Awesome video and great music...the next great spacebattles will likely come from Galactic Battlefront. Siege of the Golden City is the most epic battle ive ever read about
The only shows here i never got to watch really was Battlestar Galactica, and Babylon 5! The only new Sci-Fi series involving space now is Stargate Universe!
Looking at this, you see that the inevitable battleground humanity will enter will be space. And all the different variations, ranging from the huge capital ships of the Imperial Navy to the pathetically small but powerful F-302 Interceptors, make predicting what humanity will do inconceivably difficult. One can only hope that the designs we make, upon meeting hostile alien life, can provide ample protection of humanity. Or just give me an X-wing. I'll vape all of 'em.
I have that game AC5 Unsung War. You ever raise the background volume once they start calling your squadron the Razgriz. Dude, they were panic stricken screaming for their lives, like "Omg, one of the demons is on me. Somebody help me somebody help me." Then you hear static when his plane explodes, wild shyt. Oh yea kickass vid, almost forgot.
While I was watching this I thought to myself, just think how many lives were lost when one ship was destroyed. Then I thought I wonder if there are species somewhere out there right now engaging in huge space battles. then I though, God I hope so.
Btw, why if two spaceships from different races that never saw each other before meet in the space, they will pretty much always be having top and bottom on the same axis?
@patu8010 I have a better answer. No matter how alien ships in scifi shows look, they have all been designed by humans, and humans follow a certain logic. Bridge on top, thrusters at the back, cockpits in front on smaller ships. Unless one has the ability to think with a different logic at times, it is very hard to create truly alien looking ships.
@patu8010 Always my biggest issue with movie space battles, other than why we hear the sounds, is the absence of fully 3 dimensional tactics and looks, some shows touched on it but never 100%. The babylon 5 series has a few episodes where in battle ships came from high and low, as did trek shows, but its never really shows as it would be...but once you go all realistic there would be no spectacle, battles would be fought at great distance with near light speed projectiles.
This was a Tribute to Space Battle? I didn't see a single Space Battle video. All these videos are from movies and on TV series not from Space Battle. Your title says one thing but your description says another.

@smeagollotr that is your opinion. in my opinion the battle from Star wars VI is a classic, that being said the battles from Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 are in a league of there own in terms of Realism Strategy and physics. the battles in Babylon 5 have tatics that are applicable to the naval battles of today. it is not just two big ships pounding away at each other until one of the other is destroyed. Battlestar is along the same lines
@smeagollotr PS the Vorlons from Babylon 5 would and could destroy the Galactic Empire with a single thought if they decide to play nice. of not the Vorlons use their nearly unstoppable Juggernaut of a fleet to wipe out the empire. on top of that Vorlons are energy beings who have evolved beyond the need for a physical body, that being said they are completely immune to light sabers and most energy weapons and Vader's force choke. they do not screw around
The whole concept of aerodynamic, flowing, graceful looking ships is odd, most of them would never see atmosphere so its purely for looks. The human ships in Halo, blocky and square, seem more likely. You may also see vessels built with no single up or down design, instead having decks facing every direction, guns and sensors in every direction. Artificial gravity would not have to be one up and one down, each section could differ. I would point guns every direction, have propulsion too.
Some of the better science fiction space battles, in books, involve sinple sand canisters released at sub light on the way in a system, the debris and grit at that speed tears apart fleets. Missiles and solid objects thrown from accelerators also seem likely. Energy weapons wont happen, at least not in the first 1000 years of space travel, not when kinetic damage from objects is so much greater. Shields just are not likely. Large ships that are self sufficient are likely, fighters less so.
whats crazy is that i guarantee you within four hundred years tops we'll have genuine space warfare on some scale.... what do you think? big spaceships? would fighters make sense? maybe battles would take place at a ridiculously long range without ships even coming close to each other. we'll actually have like huge halo-style weapons platforms floating around earth
@crookedspokeadjacent We can always hope.... well hopefully we won't fight at all but if they are going to fight they might aswell have big fleets fighting ^^;
I believe there will me neither big, armoured battleships nor close combat.
Even today, any confrontation between modern fighter jets would be decided beyond visual range, and battleships are a thing of the past. Its all changing in the direction of small, agile units with intelligent, long-range, pinpoint weapons.
Even battle tanks could be obsolete in a few decades, falling prey to shoulder-launched weapons.
@MareTranquil ok nice i like the stuff you're saying. i think tanks will still have a purpose because cheap bullets have no effect on them. its not like anyone is going to switch to explosive weapons as their standard infantry weapon, there would be way too much friendly fire. that wouldnt be a problem in space tho because units would be spread very far out given the scale of things out there. so its totally possible that the same gun used to kill fighters would also fuck up a battleship
@crookedspokeadjacent Japan has allready announced they have technology to fire missiles into space and destroy satalites...this would make any spaceships have to be farther from earth, meaning that to destroy them you would have to chase them with other spaceships...so i think its safe to say we will have space battles one day.
Proud to say I knew every clip and had watched these shows and films, and I dont ever get tired of fleets in space beating the crap out of each other. In fact you could just make a 2 hour movie of a fleet engagement with no actual actors and I would watch it. From fighters up to the planet killers and all in between, its great stuff.
Warning, the following video contains Epic on a grandiose scale. People not experienced with Epic could experience Delusions of Grandeur, a severe need to kick some ass and other side effects. Please contact your local doctor about watching this vid.
WOW! Very Nice! Personal opinion...not enough Original Star Wars, but.....I'm still blown away! I have yet to figure out how to video edit, but I hope when I do, it's this good!
EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO IS PERFECT THE SONG THE QUALITY AND THE SCENE 5/5 DAMN ITS SOOO THE BEST SPACE BATTLE VIDEO YOU CAN BE SURE ILL GET THIS ON MY IPOD :D 5/5
the quality of the BSG special effects outclasses all the others, creates a weird look in the transitions. interesting music choice, liked the game a lot. nice job.
