@edwinorc Actually, mortgages WERE sold to people who couldn't afford them in order to make money, just not by the people you are expecting. The Federal Reserve set the interest rate low in order to entice people to take out loans. People do, housing prices stop growing, people default, etc. We all know the story. The government decides to spend $700 billion to save the big banks. Where does this money come from? The Federal Reserve.

The government then borrows that money, and agrees to pay it back to the Fed, plus interest. At any interest rate, the amount payed on $700 billion would be astronomical, and it all goes into the pockets of the shareholders of the Federal Reserve Bank. For free. This costs them nothing.

I reject Obama's implication that this was because of free market capitalism and lack of regulation. I think you explained part of it well -- it was a large part due to the federal reserve. Another part were the GSEs which Obama (and newt Gingrich) supported.
@edwinorc No, it was because the Gov got involved in the private sector and forced them to make loans to those who cannot afford them. I know people who were prosecutors going after banks who failed to make such loans. Banks, of course, took advantage of the situation, especially loans backed by tax payers.

President Obama is so full of it. Each time we had a recession in the nation's history, it was because government was intervening and distorting the free-market prior. Before the stock market of crash of 1929, we had a massive boom sparked by the FED's (gov.) easy monetary policies. The financial crisis was caused by fannie and freddy guaranteeing lenders a bailout if their mortgages went bad, plus the FED's low interest rate policies, which all lead to a housing boom and naturally a bust.
We need to get this country back on track, we need to get Americans back to work, and we need to stabilize the economy. Washington needs to put aside their differences and work together to put this country back at the top. People need to stop saying that President Obama isn’t doing anything, because he is. Plus other additional contribution..the amount goes up to 18.8%. Non voluntary contributions. Plus now, because of the high deficit, workers have to co-pay, after they have been deducted already on their wages, an additional 10-40%! Sounds right?

Since companies almost guranteed jobs for life, they did not want to take a chance on the unknown worker. The govt stepped in and offered a probation period for the companies and new hires and the unworking students rioted in the streets. If a lot of people can receive health care without a co-pay or co-insurance more people will come to me to treat them. I will be inundated with patients so I won't have the time to treat them as well. They have no incentive to curb their medical usage. Hell, I could possibly make more money in my particular profession if I can slam through a ton of people in one day and they keep coming and coming, but you know what... IT'S BULLSHIT! There's a way to lower HC costs via the private sector

@edwinorc Actually, mortgages WERE sold to people who couldn't afford them in order to make money, just not by the people you are expecting. The Federal Reserve set the interest rate low in order to entice people to take out loans. People do, housing prices stop growing, people default, etc. We all know the story. The government decides to spend $700 billion to save the big banks. Where does this money come from? The Federal Reserve.

@edwinorc You see, the Fed is a bank like any other (it ultimately accountable only to its shareholders, NOT the US government or its citizens), except with the power to manufacture US currency legally. The government then borrows that money, and agrees to pay it back to the Fed, plus interest. At any interest rate, the amount payed on $700 billion would be astronomical, and it all goes into the pockets of the shareholders of the Federal Reserve Bank. For free. This costs them nothing.

@MuteTheFrancis Unfortunately I don't think you understood the meaning of my post. Of course loans were made to people who couldn't afford them to make money -- that was my point. I reject Obama's implication that this was because of free market capitalism and lack of regulation. I think you explained part of it well -- it was a large part due to the federal reserve. Another part were the GSEs which Obama (and newt Gingrich) supported.

@edwinorc No, it was because the Gov got involved in the private sector and forced them to make loans to those who cannot afford them. I know people who were prosecutors going after banks who failed to make such loans. Banks, of course, took advantage of the situation, especially loans backed by tax payers.

The reality is that while we are rising some people up, some are dropping down and we need to continually help raise people up. Its like a ying yang symbols continjually chasing each other. You don't solve problems by throwing a load of cash at it; you hand the job over to those experienced in doing it. His own party even got to read the rule book once last year and then they turn around every day of the week and break every rule in the book... the Constitution. Why doesn't Obama make everyone follow the rules in that book by vetoing any and all bills or laws that cross his desk where Congress has tried to go around or overstep the rules or their powers in that book? President Obama is so full of it. Each time we had a recession in the nation's history, it was because government was intervening and distorting the free-market prior. Before the stock market of crash of 1929, we had a massive boom sparked by the FED's (gov.) easy monetary policies. The financial crisis was caused by fannie and freddy guaranteeing lenders a bailout if their mortgages went bad, plus the FED's low interest rate policies, which all lead to a housing boom and naturally a bust.

That is why they have better class mobility, more impressive Lorenze curve/gini Coefficient's and they have gov backed pension plans. They also have gov backed healthcare. They have massive gov oversight with their markets. They do what we SHOULD do which is level the playing field and make sure they get their populous back to work at all costs, all of which i have 1st hand accounts on, especially healthcare.

I am actually an engineer at a tier-1 university. So your right, no CC. And i have collaborators in nearly all the EU countries so i get around. Mobility is better in all of them except the UK. You have a better chance at getting rich there than here.

The French have exercised more freedom of speech then the US in decades (there is a phrase saying the french gov fears the people, where the us the people fear the gov). Same with the ability to attend school if you choose to do so. Germany for example only has a registration fee for those who want to go to college including medicine. Sweeden and finland have more libraries per square mile than the US has ever had. Even drug rehabilitation and incarceration they beat us on.

Funnything is, its actually less than that the US pays. GDP per capita for healthcare in the usa is 2X than the countries i just mentioned. And they cover everybody! The economy is NOT stronger. In all of the EU countries, and other developing countries, all extreme cases are pushed to the front. In neurosurgery which is what i know the best, you can wait weeks for a stent in the USA depending on the circumstances. As for bailouts, no indiv got any. The banks did to keep credit moving. Your def of class-war is backwards b/c rich get perks we dont.

the #'s dont lie. This is part of what i do. Strokes, cancer rates, and cardio disease we are outpaced on. Where you lived i have no clue. But in france, denmark, new-zealand, japan, germany i know offhand are better with everything except late stage cancer which most are approx a dead heat. (NPR, boston globe, RT, and world heath organization have good articles on this) If you want ill send them all over......

Plus other additional contribution..the amount goes up to 18.8%. Non voluntary contributions. Plus now, because of the high deficit, workers have to co-pay, after they have been deducted already on their wages, an additional 10-40%! Sounds right?

Far less student loan debt and the care you get is better. You want something that works good, doesnt hinder the gov and enhances free market competitiveness, you have to pay a price, but its still LESS than what we pay if you take into account the uninsured.

Since companies almost guranteed jobs for life, they did not want to take a chance on the unknown worker. The govt stepped in and offered a probation period for the companies and new hires and the unworking students rioted in the streets. When you take entittlements from the entitlement mentality that society acts like the spoiled child they were raised to be. No country has better mobility than US.
