  • I like Stephen Fry, I think he's great, but this is an exceedingly stupid argument. He ultimately falls back on the defence that if we can show shootings, we should be able to show people drive without seat-belts. It's a transparently ridiculous comparison, and it robs his argument, such as it were, of any merit it might have. I do in fact believe that a director should have the freedom to portray what they want to portray, but this is hardly a gross artistic compromise. Grow up Stephen.

  • At 1:55, I think he confuses Colin Firth with Peter Firth :3

  • "A whole generation have confused political correctness with heath & safety legislation" - Stewart Lee

  • Erm, I like Stephen Fry a lot but it's really weird that he can't tell the difference between political correctness with health and safety.

  • @thewildplaces Didn't you listen to the beginning? Blame the title, not Stephen.

  • "...with an extra side order of hell." Fry & Laurie reference there. ;D

  • I agree with him but... the reason why shooting is allowed and not wearing a seatbelt isn't is because: people who shoot other people in the face are acting totally contrary to mainstream collective morality. People who drive with a phone are just going a little way off the beaten track of morality. Noone would ever in their right mind think shooting is ok... but probably a few idiots would think using a phone in that situation is. I see the PC nazi's POV but I do disagree becauseitmakesmeangry.

  • there should be absolutely nothing forbidden on TV. that is absolutely unjust that UK tv is that restrictive on artists.

  • The reason that driving on the phone can't be shown while killing may be has to do with likelihood of emulation. Everyone owns a phone and drives in a car- and speaking on the phone is usually a victimless crime. Fewer people own assault guns and shooting at the face is rarely victimless. The 'they do it on telly' factor isn't enough to propel someone through the various steps of acquiring a weapon, picking a target etc. It may just be enough, however, to convince them to hit the green button.

  • XD

Oh how great it is!! But add some swearing in the manner of George Carlin and it would be fantastic! Oooh, but I live a jolly good ol' English way of expressing frustration and infuriation in a perfectly polite manner!... ;-)

  • What a wonderful image - it really captures his joy and his exciting nature, despite his affliction. A brilliant man with brilliant ideas.

  • The only thing that could make this better is if David Mitchell joined in. (:

  • I now love the phrase "needle bending anger."

  • Yes, teach children to obey the law even in the most crisis and dire situations, so if there comes out another Hitler, they'll know that they're not allowed to hide jews on the attic and fight with an occupant, becouse it's against the law.

  • Driving with no seat belts would be a real offense + fine given. Film is a proof of that. Shooting someone in the face while acting is not an offense, but shooting someone for real and filming it would be a crime. Thats where the difference is. You cannot drive (virtually everywhere) with no seat belts and on the phone.

  • @kswiatlo They aren't always actually driving when they film chase scenes

  • @kswiatlo The law is a bit funny on the matter of seat belts and mobile phones.

Only the front seats require seatbelts by law (and as an aside, only the driver's side requires a wingmirror - go figure), the back seats don't. And tests have shown hands free kits to be just as bad as using a mobile phone, the fact you have a hand free is negated by the false sense of security you get with hands free - your reaction time is almost exactly the same.

Laws are funny things like that.

  • I know this isn't about political correctness and is more about health and safety but, by christ, this rant is utter shit. I say this as a Stephen Fry fan too.

  • lol this is funny his voice gets so high pitched he sounds like the queen

  • i keep getting distracted by the snowflakes

  • Anyone else think he looks like a fat Kenneth Williams in that photograph?

  • amazing amazing amazing

  • So maby they shouldn't shoot people either? Im rather certain some people will be more inclined to kill people after seing other people do so.

  • @Mullahgrrl Indeed, all television avoid swearing/violence/dialogue/action/scenery/movement/breathing

  • @wonderbrawl1919 Movement and breathing is good, I wouldn't compare it to killing people, but if I would then it would be very favorably.

  • STEPHEN THINK I R WISE, EVERYONE PRAISE ME

  • Quite true. I'm proud and pleased to be an ex-pat. :)

  • Isn't this just Jeremy Clarkson doing a very good Stephen Fry impression?

  • Comment removed

  • Dionysos37. U say WE'RE Who do u mean,just to clarify ?

  • We're just coming out of about 20 centuries of wholesale racism, hate, mass murder and complete discrimination. So you worry about "PC" and not feeling welcome to speak insults freely anymore---oh, what terrible oppression you suffer! I'd rather an age of PC than another age of where we've been.

  • @Dionysos37 The exact problem is that you don't see the terribleness of all of what you've just mentioned being PC'd away rather than fading away naturally. This repression of thoughts, ideas, words, and ideologies only goes to protect those racists, haters, mass murderers, and unadulterated discriminators. By not letting them express themselves freely those that have done so have also kept us from being able to tell who believes such things. and that's only the tip of the "PC = bs" Iceberg

  • @daPlumber702 "Political Correctness" was invented by the RIGHT to be a monkey-wrench in human progress. We're supposed to worry about respecting people who have no respect. To be kindly tolerant of people who are brutally intolerant. To be just fine with cowards full of hate who whine like beaten bullies cuz the party's over. So when I hear hate speech? Indeed, I always invite the speaker to explain their views. Problem---they can't. So they whine like they're being oppressed. Oh, please!

  • @Dionysos37 Not sure where you came up with that. As neither an ass nor an elephant I can say without bias that not only is there evidence of "PC" being created by the left side of politics, but they have twisted it more than any other group to suit their whims... until the recent string of arab, no you can't draw that cartoon cause we'll saw your friggin' head off shit that is. Censorship is more of a right thing... but that's a whole other discussion, censorship and PC are not the same thing.

  • @daPlumber702 With respect, I never said PC = Censorship. PC went mainstream via Lee Atwater, aka The Prince of Darkness, GOP leader and Poppy Bush's pal in the 1980s---Rove's dark master. What are your examples, please? And I repeat what I've long observed. People who so actively feel oppressed by "PC"---the intolerance of hate---usually wish to express just that. I respect nobody's ignorant brutality. By all means, LET THEM TALK! If human progress speaks back, it's too freakin' bad.

  • @Dionysos37 Do you really have such a lack of the sense of irony to realise that what you're condemning in justification of PC is the very reason why PC is so stupid? 100 years ago, do you think that white people thought racism to be wrong? They thought it to be within proper ethics. What progressed their views was the attack of the status quo that PC suppresses. '20 centuries' of intolerable customs - indeed. And how arrogant to suggest that we don't persist with any ourselves.

  • Does it not occur to him that if they weren't 'wearing seatbelts' etc during filming a high speed chase in on a public road for example that they would get harassed constantly by the police? It's the same for when they won't allow anything remotely looking like a real gun/weapon etc in a public area.

It's not about what's filmed it's about where they're allowed to film, as someone who's constantly in the media you'd think Fry would know this. I mean I do love him but ffs...

  • @darkieschmuckie did you seriously just say that? do you honestly believe that they film high speed chases on open public roads? also, do you actually believe that the actors are driving the cars in the scenes? learn how films work before you make a comment such as this, you just end up looking much sillier by the end.

  • @theledal A CLOSED PUBLIC ROAD. I didn't mention 'open' anywhere. You still need police there and they're probably gonna tell you to put a seatbelt, even more so if you're filming in somewhere like London. Should I mention I've done filming and worked in media? See the gun reference, it's insanely hard to film guns.

  • @darkieschmuckie do bare in mind that when they film the actors in the car, the windows are merely green screened, if they put a camera in a moving car it would rattle and the noise would be atrocious.

  • This would be an excellent video if is wasn't for the misleading title.

You wouldn't happen to be Stuart Lee's Gran, would you?

  • This would be an excellent video if is wasn't for the misleading title.

  • This is about Health and Safety, not Political Correctness.

  • @mayer8356 So Stewart Lee was right. Some people seem to mix up Political Correctness with Health & Safety legislation.

  • Just talking to this man must be like having a book read to you! :P

  • political correctness should be outlawed

  • I want him saying FACK OFF on my mobile phone so I can play it at any moment I wish

  • "Compliance with making this country a shit hole" :D

  • Stephen Fry is a good man.

  • What show is he talking about??

  • @blickluke "Spooks" - I think. Can't forget the cheesy tagline they had at the start, "MI5 not 9 to 5".

  • GENERAL MELCHETT !!!

  • Excellent rant, except it's Peter Firth, not Colin Firth, who plays Harry Pearce.

  • This has absolutely nothing to do with Political Correctness, as Stephen Fry makes clear at the outset.

  • I assure you, play this man's speech backwards and he will sound pretty much the same.

  • Compliance with making this country a shithole!

    Hahaha!

  • He is so British ! :D Intelligent, well-spoken and all. It's a cliché I know but I love how he speaks, and he's got a point here.

  • Progressives ask that our inheritance of the language of disrespect (and worse) be left behind in our discourse. It's foolish to think that the languages of hate, objectification etc. will go away on their own (especially under christian capitalism). Conservatives say this infringes on their "freedom"---which means the "freedom" to insult others with impunity. But that, they'll never say out loud. BTW, it was conservatives who used to BURN people for saying "improper" things, never progressives.

  • "Political correctness" is nothing but a monkey wrench created by right wingers to make everybody double-think their own urges toward progress and getting along. Just calmly invite anybody who yells "PC" to say exactly and completely what they want to say that's being "repressed," and they stop talking---because they're actually ashamed of their own ignorant biases, but want you to respect them for their lack of respect. Stephen Fry is the greatest!

  • @37Dionysos The left wing gave us political correctness. One dare not offend anyone.

  • Superb.

  • He surely had a cold that day.

  • You go Stephen. I could listen to you rant all night.

  • trivial, shrill, pointless

  • Beautiful speaking voice; soothes the soul!

  • Stephen Fry for King.

  • @northanortha Stephen Fry for Queen

  • That's a contender for funniest youtube comment of the year! It's beaten, I'm sorry to say, by a youtuber on the trailer for Con Air. He wrote, ''at least it's better than Ryanair!''

  • I could listen to him rant forever:)

  • shooting people in the face is illegal?

  • Amen!!!

  • Very well said.

  • this is brilliant!
