To answer your question,..it is possible to do palm muting with the right hand even when playing leads. It's all about how you angle your picking hand, and how you control the motion of your fingers. The smallest motion you can do...the more accurate and better tone you can have with your guitar playing.Hope this helps:-)
@johntreen101 is this possible without nails? I've been working out my fingerstyle technique and speed but I really don't wanna grow out nails, and also is it possible to use index middle and ring rather than thumb index and middle? Any tips or exercises? I find that scales with 3 notes per string are quite easy but when a string only has two notes, it can quickly get very tricky to find a good fingering (learning when to lift off a finger and reposition etc).
1.Yes i believe its possible to do this without nails as i myself do'nt grow my nails long:-)
2.Yes,its also possible to do this with the index and middle n ring finger, rather than thumb, index and middle finger.Check out kosta vreto here on you tube. Its just a case of getting used to one tchnique or the other..its all "muscle memory".
3.Practice very slowly at first.Analyze how you execute each scale pattern, then try to focus on how to make this feel natural and comfortable for you.
I've been learning classical guitar for a lil while now and i've found that having really long nails is actually worse for your playing. instead you should keep your nails just long enough to where you can barely see them at the fingertips. (this way you can play with ur nails or swith to just skin for different tones)
so in short, speed is the same with or without nails. :D hope this helps
with regards to your question,it depends really which scale i'm playing..for example with pentatonic,i use 2 fingers.with a 3 note per string scale(ex: mixolydian),i use 3 fingers.hope this helps!

Nice chops. You do a good job of getting a clean sound even with distortion (not easy fingerstyle because palm muting is difficult). Well done.

It shure does , also do you have the same speed whitout using nails (just skin) or do the nails give you more precision and thus more speed?
I'm really new to fingerstyle , been using a pick for about 2 years now.
Any pointers?

How do you go about doing scales , alternate between 2 or 3 fingers?.
Great chops between us , your legato is awesome.
