@TOMOFONO only if the cracks are tiny and Saturns are pretty crappy engines that crack quite a bit when old. Notice no one bought the company when it went bankrupt.
Scotty..I HAve This PRoblem With My 1997 pontiac Grand AM..IT Doesnt HAve a Radiator. it has the reservoir located on the LEft side of the engine...I Will use This Liquid But how?
I did not want to offend you, but i have only had bad experiences with the liquid sealer. Though i haven´ senn the brand you use here in Denmark, but other brands use small metal particles in the mix, which cloggs up the cooling system almost every time.
But i would recommend that you advice your viewers only to go with this solution only in an emergency because it won´t last forever.
But anyways, i do like your great videos and good mood :-)
@Lasselkv28 ah, but you've never tried this one. It has no particles in it to clog stuff up. I've been using it decades with good results for those without funds to tear the engine down.
@RIVERRATNODRIFTING I have no idea what those stupid non interpreted codes mean. My scan machines all translate that $ nonsense and stuff into real english language codes. that's how I analyze em with my machines, there are ways to analyze that crap, but I don't know how cause I do it in english already translated.
you recommend taking the spark plug out and you say its to give it a better chance to seal? is it so the compression doesnt try to push the sealant back out? i heard that that stuff is heat activated, so if i leave the spark plug in, will the sealant get all over the cylinder and valves and ruin the vavles abilitly to seal correctly or get all over the piston rings?
also, i just wanted to thank you for all your help, i always recommend your channel! youre the best scotty! love the cigar tip!
@yourallbrainwashed it's still hot inside the engine, heat dissipates thoughout the engine. And it isn't going to stop sealing, that's for sure. Of course, realize this is a last ditch attempt to fix a seriously failing engine, so try it and pray.
@scottykilmer thanks for getting back to me! its must be a full time job answering all the questions you get from youtube? i just wanted to let you know that i really appreciate all the time and effort you put into making these videos and answering your viewers questions!!!! oh i almost forgot, have you ever had a situation where steel seal didnt work or failed in a relatively short time? whats the percentage of sucsess and how many times have you used steel seal? sorry for so many questions :[
@yourallbrainwashed just depends on the size of the holes, and no one knows until you try. I've seen it fix hundreds of em, and seen it fail in less than twenty.
hi Scotty, thank you for putting this great video on here it's gonna help me a lot. I've recently found coolant in my oil and intend to try a sealer to fix the gasket leak. Hey scotty, i have a question. I have a 99 cadillac deville with the northstar engine. The head gasket is going, could steel seal help? And what is your guess of the cost of having the head gaskets replaced, just an estimate?
Hi Scotty I have a 1995 3.4l Camaro. About a month ago I ran some seafoam through it to clean out the carbon. I havent really driven it much because it's kind of like a project, but recently there have been small hints of white vapor coming from my exhaust tips. It smells sweet like coolant so I checked/ tasted the oil, it was fine and opened the radiator cap and no gurgling. Checked the coolant and havent seemed to have lost any. Could it possibly be the lower intake gasket? Will steelseal work
I've only ever had this stuff work one time. and that was on a 2jzgtte. However once I bounced off that rev limiter a time or two I had to redo the cycle and add another bottle eventually clogging my heater core and causing other cooling issues. So I think its a great temporary fix but long term is a lose lose. Also If someone sold me a car that they did this to. I would have them in court so fast that there head would spin.
i have a 76 f100 with a 360 and it started up fine and ran after the rebuild i did it my self but on the way home from the shop it started smoking and running high temps and theres colant in oil could headgasket have blown already or intake gaskets?
@scottykilmer you recommend taking the spark plug out and you say its to give it a better chance to seal? is it so the compression doesnt try to push the sealant back out? i heard that that stuff is heat activated, so if i leave the spark plug in, will the sealant get all over the cylinder and valves and ruin the vavles abilitly to seal correctly or get all over the piston rings?

Great videos, even for a car incompetent like mine. The car's not overheating and coolant's not leaking but its smoking certain times (when gas tanks low) and heat smells sweet. is this a head gasket problem or maybe a belt or the catty converter?
@fresno93703 oh, terms like tune up don't even really mean anything these days, everything is computer controlled so no real adjustments can be made. two grand is a lot of money, just basically maintain the vehicle and don't get suckered into terms like "major tune up", it's just a marketing ploy by garages.
hey scotty, nice videos very helpful but i have a question, i have a 99 grand am gt 3.4 and i just replaced my intake manifold gasket thinking it was my problem put it all back together and i guess it gave the car enough power to show its true symptoms it blew lots of water out of overflow, i looked at oil cap..yellowish residue, anyways should i do the liquid sealer as something permanent? a buddy said that its a temporary fix and will eventually kill the engine. should i just replace gasket?
@itsmattmutherfucka I would replace the head gasket if you plan on keeping it long term. But me, I'd never keep that thing, they are endless money pits as they age. I'd put the sealer in and get rid of it fast. They don't make em anymore for many good reasons.
Hey Scotty, I own a 1996 Cadillac Deville with a blown head gasket. I have heard that the Northstar V8 engine is a tough job. Do you think I should trade the car in, or take my chance and use that Steel Seal?
@WStech92 They are expensive monsters to take apart, many thousands to do just a head gasket job. Me, I'd try the sealer and sell if fast if it worked.
@WStech92 dude you should get rid of that car they r super expensive to fix and known for head gaskets problems same as the aurora same engine my sister had one and boy they r a trip.they run very smooth and strong but when they go its expensive to fix mostly anything. you cant even reach inside the bay its so tight lol.good luck
Thank you Scotty.. Will it harm the engine in time???? If I replace the valve cover, will it stop the puff of white smoke coming out. I appreciate your help. You save me tons..
@tllhm2 valve cover has nothing to do with that smoke, that's the head gasket, a BIG job. Try this sealer for that, just be sure to have new clean coolant in the cooling system and remove the thermostat before putting the sealer in.
i have a 1994 chevy suburban k1500 that starts a little rough and makes a misfire noise until it heats up i just checked the coolant and the oil and both are extremely low after just doing an oil change 500 miles ago what could this be?
I have a 2005 Camry with a V4 engine. When I start the engine from a cold start it shoots off a puff of white smoke. It only there for a couple of second then disappears. Looks like my valve has a small oil leak. If I replace the valve gasket will that solve my problem or is it a head gasket??
@YungJuiceman23 No, but an old worn pump may start leaking when any sealer is used. Realize replacing a water pump is a tiny cost compared to replacing an engine head gasket.
Hey Scotty i have 93 civic that loses coolant but couldnt find leaks on radiator or hoses. Theres bubbles when i open rad cap and start the car. Also it throws white smoke on the tail pipe. Is ii blown head gasket?
@prettyald probably, but do my test "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" on the scottykilmer channel on youtube and have that test done first.
hey i was told to take off my heads to measure my pistons to see wat size my engine was because casting # were ground off so when i pulled one of the bolts out it started to squirt antifreeze so do i just need a new head gasket of is it somthing more major?
@bmxking411 dude, you dont need to take the engine apart to know what size engine it is, what type of car is it? just do a google search on the car and see what engine options the car came out with.
Scotty, I have a 1998 land rover discovery and it keeps throwing the code p1179. The o2's are reading voltage fine, there is no leaks in the intake manifold or any vacum leaks, and I have a bottle of fuel injector cleaner running through it, but it keeps on coming back. Any thoughts?
@GCRCspartan yea, don't buy a money pit land rover, they kill you when they get over ten years old. You should find a mechanic with a dealer level scan tool for that rover who won't rip you off (good luck there) to analyze the dealer level data to check for problem areas. They are that complex, I have one of those, but even then I still hate working on them. but of course, if it runs fine, do as many owner's do, ignore the light.
@GCRCspartan they do a hell of a lot more than that, they actively test stuff, run automated tests when activated, and more. But, I would fix a pending code if that's all youhave.
@scottykilmer I see...I've been thinking about it and I have a few more things Im going to try. If those dont work, ill just ignore it. Thanks for the advise.
I removed the head out of my 1987 lancia thema 2.0 turbo, head gasket was broken between second and third cylinders and the engine block had a nick in it so i sanded the whole block down til it was gone.. Is it safe enough to sand it down by hand as far as i use a straight metal bar and the thinnest feeler gauge to carefully check for lower areas? or would you remove the block (lot of work) and have it machined? (further expense)
@josh198869 yea, be in the lookout for a toyota instead. VWS are crap wagons these days. The old beetles were great, the new ones are overengineered money pits. Plus they are cheaply put together, plastic everywhere.
We have a 2003 corvette we are selling, it has 20,753 miles on it and it runs great. The guy interested in buying said it looks like there is a leak in the head gasket. We see no leaks, the car runs good, no smell, nothing. He didnt even really look, I'm thinking he is trying to get us to drop the price and he wanted us to take it to the dealer to have it checked out. Is there a way to look at it without it going to the dealer? Please help!
@nerakk57 yes, dealers are crooks anyway. Do my video "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" and have that test done, the kits cost 50 bucks or so.
@mommy3ts Hardly anything will fix a poorly designed northstar head. But, since it costs many thousands to do a head job on one, why not pray real hard and try.
Love your videos! I'm thinking about buying a 98 or 99 Cadillac Deville for my parents. I read online that their biggest issue is with head gaskets leaking, would this be a good fix for this issue? I only have about $2000 to spend on the car and it needs to be a daily driver round trip of about 50-70 miles a day, so it needs to be dependable. Would you personally do this or would you take the time and replace the gaskets? i don't plan on buying one with a leaking head gaskets.
i like scotty's videos and all but think about what other holes you may be filling. i have done head gaskets in the past... the parts are not what costs money its the labor rate the shop will charge you! my point is if you can do it yourself its best not to mess with any additives. if there is oil in the coolant its not that bad, if there is coolant in the oil or the engine is burning it the problem becomes more serious! could also be a cracked head or block which will need to be milled
Hey Scotty you got some good videos. I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 V6 with a blown head gasket. The reason I know is because the radiator neck and the reservoir smells like exhaust and the Walls of the valve cover have the milky substance. Well I wanna try this but I'm gonna use blue devil. And would it matter if I removed the spark plug which is burning the antifreeze? Getting to the back spark plugs is a pain. After flush do you put water and sealant or coolant and sealant ?
@ricky549880 I would not use blue devil, seen it clog stuff up. but I would remove the spark plug on the wet cylinder, and with steel seal you use 50 percent coolant and 50 percent water for it to work.l I don't know about other sealers how they mix though.
So a couple of weeks ago I was tipsy and posted kind of a mean comment here; which you responded to. I troll when I drink. I'm sorry. I went back and deleted it a while later and I honestly do feel bad. Your videos have been quite helpful for me.
there's no way that's permanent it could end up with more serious problems! but if it keeps an old battle bus going for a year or so you are winning and you did say money problems from customers which i experience myself, fair play i just hope they don't sell the car afterwards to some unsuspecting victim
@dyunna1 NO, no test is 100 percent, just like doctor tests on you. It could be bad other ways that a chem test wouldn't show. But if it showed postivie, then it is damaged.
1990 Honda Accord LX with a cracked engine block. Car was running hot and pouring fluid. Timing belt jumped and water pump failed. Some backyard mechanic "fixed" it, but couldn't set the timing right. I can still drive it, but it starts off very slow then fast when I change to 2nd gear, then slow, then fast and the speed will pick up gradually. I feel that my only other option is to replace the entire motor. Any suggestions, Scotty?? Thanks and I love your videos!!
@BabyBeyonce09 I'd put in a used engine myself, fixing those engines costs too much to do corectly, and the job is often botched by such guys. tons of accord engines out there, try to get one from japan, they are best.
we need more mechanics like u lol.. all places do is do half ass jobs, best mechanics are people who own a shop or something, sears,, places like that are expensive and half ass.
I've heard this will help coolant leaking in the oil but not vice versa. Further more, most modern cars use aluminum heads which renders the sealant useless.
@paingain100 yes on the first comment, but no on the second. I've done it on tons of japanese and american cars with aluminum heads and it worked. The metal type has nothing to do with it.
hey i been having a radiator problem not much of a overheating unless ima outta antifrezze i dobut its a head gasket cuz even the car is off it leaks but most when the car is running the resevor overfills and it throws it out thru the little hose on the reservor ....my car is a 97 eclipse N/A
This is a terrible idea; if a leak develops between a coolant passage and an oil passage, there may be no signs of failure until it's too late; the coolant will destroy the bearing shells and lead to an even COSTLIER repair. This also doesn't help if the leak is between two or more cylinders. I admire your efforts in saving people money, but I just don't feel that this is good advice. Just scrape up your money and fix it right.
@bbishoppcm of course replacing it is the best idea, but in many modern cars that can run thousands which people don't have these days. SO, rather than junk the car, why not try a sealer? I of course give my customers the choice, and they make it.
Scotty, thanks for your response! I had a question about taking the spark plug out and disconnecting the injector. That can only be done when one cylinder has coolant in it, right?
If you have more than one I'm assuming you can't take out multiple spark plugs. My car has 6 cylinders. Thanks again.
@bluemoonseller Sodium Silicate is the active ingredient in most of these sealants and sells for a fraction of the price at your local convenience store.
thank you! Ill be finishing tommarrow. I used red rtv on each side of the gasket for the thermostat housing.. Is this the way to go? I heard to do so, but id like a second opinion. thanks
Hello Scotty. I have been trying to replace my head gasket on my 90 mustang. I have 2 question for you if you could help.. 1 How do I clean the head? im using scotch brite pads and a razor but theres black stuff around some ports that wont come off easy. 2 I dont plan on using any head gasket sealer other then a few drop of rtv or gold lion to keep the gaskets in place. does this sound right to you? thank you so much for the videos
@scottykilmer thnak you so much.. I will try and put the gaskets on with no sealer but it will be extremley hard due to the angle of the head.. Ive spent more time scrapping the head clean then I have dissasembling it. Does my head need to be shining? or can it have a little bit of black in places?
Best bet is to either stop being lazy and service the head gasket, or have a professional do it for you. Pro tip, don't rev your engine past 5k rpm, don't let it run hot (that requires keeping your eye on the temperature gauge). Fixers in a bottle are usually temporary fixes, and if you don't know what your doing they will do more harm than good, if any good at all. I've seen it all, I work at a full service shop, make the right decision...
ah, i remember using some k seal in the old fiat, the chemical test showed exhaust gases getting into the coolant, and it was loosing coolant badly. I had considered a new engine but the stuff actually worked. although i sold the car, how long it would have lasted?
@bluemoonseller sometimes he gives out bad infprmation man. He said in another Steel Seal video that all you had to do was simply pour the Steel Seal in The Radiator and thats it, but in this damn video scotty tells us to take out the damn thermostat. Which is it scotty dammit? you making me lose Steel Seal here asshole.
@scottykilmer You instructed us in another Steel Seal video that we just pour the Steel Seal in The Radiator and thats it, but in this video you tell us to take out the thermostat. Why is this scotty? this is misleading now seriously! why would you do that?
This is precisely the information I've been looking for. My brother gave me his 92 Previa van with 230,000 miles and a it's HG leak. The Stop leak product had worked until this week. It's leaking double now.
Can I flush out old stop leak product and put your method to work?
Guess what???I just bought a saturn sc2 without looking in the radiator reservoir...When i did look at it, it had this thick jelly all inside of it. The drain plug on the radiator was broken off.
@medini2 Bought a new drain plug, my son took it to his friend's shop and they drained the radiator and ran water thru the radiator and a lot of junk came out of it. They filled it up with water. Turned the engine on...and, now, a LOT of WHITE SMOKE is coming out of the exhaust. It is looking like the man who sold it to me put a chemical block sealant in the engine....
Hey Scotty can this work on the Saturn SL cracked head leaks? Have u tried?

Thank you Scotty.. Will it harm the engine in time???? If I replace the valve cover, will it stop the puff of white smoke coming out. I appreciate your help. You save me tons..
tllhm2 2 weeks ago
@tllhm2 valve cover has nothing to do with that smoke, that's the head gasket, a BIG job. Try this sealer for that, just be sure to have new clean coolant in the cooling system and remove the thermostat before putting the sealer in.

tllhm2 2 weeks ago
@tllhm2 actually it's generally neither on that, worn valve seals do that. If it runs fine and doesn't overheat , me, I'd live with it.

bmxking411 2 weeks ago
@bmxking411 could just be a blown head gasket.
scottykilmer 2 weeks ago
@scottykilmer ok so do i just leave it and replace gasket or do i clean all the antifreeze out
bmxking411 2 weeks ago
@bmxking411 you have to take the whole top of the engine apart to do the gasket, then clean all the fluids off before putting it back together.

GCRCspartan 3 weeks ago
@GCRCspartan yea, don't buy a money pit land rover, they kill you when they get over ten years old. You should find a mechanic with a dealer level scan tool for that rover who won't rip you off (good luck there) to analyze the dealer level data to check for problem areas. They are that complex, I have one of those, but even then I still hate working on them. but of course, if it runs fine, do as many owner's do, ignore the light.
scottykilmer 2 weeks ago
@scottykilmer These dealer level scan tools, do they just pull voltage readings from various sensors to find the problem source?
Well, it does run perfectly fine....and it only comes up as a pending code (CEL doesn't even come on.)
GCRCspartan 2 weeks ago
@GCRCspartan they do a hell of a lot more than that, they actively test stuff, run automated tests when activated, and more. But, I would fix a pending code if that's all youhave.
scottykilmer 2 weeks ago
@scottykilmer I see...I've been thinking about it and I have a few more things Im going to try. If those dont work, ill just ignore it. Thanks for the advise.

I removed the head out of my 1987 lancia thema 2.0 turbo, head gasket was broken between second and third cylinders and the engine block had a nick in it so i sanded the whole block down til it was gone.. Is it safe enough to sand it down by hand as far as i use a straight metal bar and the thinnest feeler gauge to carefully check for lower areas? or would you remove the block (lot of work) and have it machined? (further expense)

We see no leaks, the car runs good, no smell, nothing. He didnt even really look, I'm thinking he is trying to get us to drop the price and he wanted us to take it to the dealer to have it checked out. Would you personally do this or would you take the time and replace the gaskets? i don't plan on buying one with a leaking head gaskets.

scottykilmer 3 weeks ago
i like scotty's videos and all but think about what other holes you may be filling. i have done head gaskets in the past... the parts are not what costs money its the labor rate the shop will charge you! my point is if you can do it yourself its best not to mess with any additives. if there is oil in the coolant its not that bad, if there is coolant in the oil or the engine is burning it the problem becomes more serious! could also be a cracked head or block which will need to be milled

After flush do you put water and sealant or coolant and sealant ?
ricky549880 1 month ago
@ricky549880 I would not use blue devil, seen it clog stuff up. but I would remove the spark plug on the wet cylinder, and with steel seal you use 50 percent coolant and 50 percent water for it to work.l I don't know about other sealers how they mix though.

Just scrape up your money and fix it right.
bbishoppcm 1 month ago
@bbishoppcm of course replacing it is the best idea, but in many modern cars that can run thousands which people don't have these days. SO, rather than junk the car, why not try a sealer? I of course give my customers the choice, and they make it.
scottykilmer 1 month ago
Scotty, thanks for your response! I had a question about taking the spark plug out and disconnecting the injector. That can only be done when one cylinder has coolant in it, right?
If you have more than one I'm assuming you can't take out multiple spark plugs. My car has 6 cylinders. Thanks again.

@JuOn666 Do not use any sealer, that can mess stuff up. Use lacquer thinner to remove any crud.

@scottykilmer thnak you so much.. I will try and put the gaskets on with no sealer but it will be extremley hard due to the angle of the head.. Ive spent more time scrapping the head clean then I have dissasembling it. Does my head need to be shining? or can it have a little bit of black in places?
JuOn666 1 month ago
@JuOn666 you can have bits of black, and you don't want em shiny, you want em dull.
scottykilmer 1 month ago
Best bet is to either stop being lazy and service the head gasket, or have a professional do it for you. Pro tip, don't rev your engine past 5k rpm, don't let it run hot (that requires keeping your eye on the temperature gauge). Fixers in a bottle are usually temporary fixes, and if you don't know what your doing they will do more harm than good, if any good at all. I've seen it all, I work at a full service shop, make the right decision...
