@MarkCox73 Totally agree. Although this is not a loss like the historic Munroe Falls Dam. Munroe Falls Dam is now an unrecognizable jumble of sandstone blocks. The P&O slackwater dam in Gerard is untouched. How will the dam for the power plant in Cuyahoga Falls go, or stay?. The actual Cuyahoga Falls is immediately behind that dam.
CSX is on the P&O's towpath "above" this lock, but not on its prism below it. The water in the foreground here IS IN the P&O's prism. Atop the lock, a bridge carried the towpath from the slackpool's east bank to the berm between the canal (foreground) and river (beyond.) This berm, ruptured by floodwaters in 1913, was never repaired. The river now flows through the lock ruins, into the prism, through the ruptured berm & back into the river. See that easily at youtube dot com/watch?v=Ro3zkEsKUPQ
@DoJoRa3 Thank you Don. I believe you to be saying that upstream from the dam the railroad, being a double track, is also on top of the prism upstream. Downstream - at the dam lock the track is beside the canal. Do you have similar info on the location of the interurban that ran for a while on the P&O ROW by the railroad? Thanks again.
@gjhgjh I'm sorry, you misunderstood me. In canal nomenclature, "prism" refers to the ditch itself, and for roughly a mile upstream of this lock there was no prism as the Kent dam created a navigable slackpool over the riverbed itself. Where deemed necessary or desirable, a bit of blasting widened and straightened the river channel, and more blasting produced the required towpath on its rocky east bank. Doubtless, the railroad had to modify the towpath before it could be double-tracked.
@gjhgjh I've been comparing the routes of the canal, the railroad and the interurban line, which was part of the Cleveland, Alliance & Mahoning Valley Railway (C.A. & M.V.R.R.). North of Kent the CSX turns east "tighter" than the canal did, sparing prism between Kent & Ravenna. The CSX rejoins the canal & lies in its former bed thru Ravenna. The Newton Falls/Warren line of CA&MVRR met the canal route at Campbellsport (just west of Rte. 14) & mostly followed it east thru Newton Falls to Warren.
@DoJoRa3 ! WOW ! Thanks Don. Now I got more P&O remnants to look for on my next trip to the 'old country'. You are most informed on this historic ROW? I have heard two stories on P&O locks at the West end of the canal. 1. no lock between 1st National building on Main St in Akron and Kent Dam. 2. lock at Cuy Falls Bailey road. Any idea which is true?
@gjhgjh Supposedly after the May removal of the dams in the Cuyahoga Falls the old dam will be visible again by the Gaylord Grove bridge just east of Bailey Rd. It's condition is unknown.
Ahh! The P and O canal slackwater lock. Did you know that the part that is there of the canal was actually rebuilt much later after the canal era, so the lock is not even in its original shape
@ohiocanalgirl Thanks. Great to know another P&O buff. I shot this & Plum Crk Viaduct while their for my 50th Stow HS Reunion. How did this lock converted to river passage and dam converted to fountain do in your floods this year?
@trainfart Yes, I agree. Too much labeling, at the start and at the end. A toy in YOUTUBE, the ANNOTATIONS tab, I went crazy with it. And while I was going over board noting, I missed a useful note input within the video at 1:09 . Thanks for telling me.
I miss the way it used to be :(
