an easter egg is something HIDDEN and often not related to the actual game .... its not an easter egg if it appears in all MI games and the protagonist even mentions it.
an easter egg would be for example... if guybrusch finds a hat and a whip hidden in the game and quotes something from indiana jones.

An inside reference is a reference to information you would only know about if you knew the character's history, like the "I can hold my breath for 10 minutes" thing, or the "I thought you couldn't die in a LucasArts game" note by Mort.
Don't know why, but Guybrush reminds me of Beavis and Butthead, the way he's animated I guess. Mr. Van Dressen?
