I love the Byzantine Empire, and would love to see the minarets taken down on the Hagia Sophia, however people need to understand that it wasn't just the Turks that destroyed the empire, as Western Europe, specifically the Sicilians, invaded the Empire and made it weak, eventually creating the Latin Empire. The Hungarians were the ones who sold the original cannons to the Turks, and no Catholic Nation offered help when Constantinople was sacked. I am not attacking Catholics, as i am Catholic.

Cute.First the catholic crusaders raped this rotten apple called byzantine. Then the Turks crushed it.And today greeks still dream of this raped rotten apple.

@OsmanOsmanHan That dreams shattered the glass legs of Othomman Empire against any odd only crazy can do that,So many trees this year burn and the paper is rare and so,they dont have to lend us to support euro coin haha
@OsmanOsmanHan Learn a bit of self-restrain when giving comments. You call rotten apple the Eastern Roman Empire but it lasted more than 1000 years. What about your pathetic Empire that took the most developed part of the world and made it one of the most regressive? Where were the Turkish ships? In Indonesia? In Australia? Even the few Dutch were but Turks, no they could not. Since the early 18th century the Ottoman Empire was ready to fall and was preserved by western Europeans...
@OsmanOsmanHan Byzantines are the remnants of the Romans that became hellenized. The Crusaders attacked Byzantium to get rich much like the Turks. Every people dream and hopes of the days when they were the best. Every people seem to spend their time at the bottom. Thus you probably need a psychiatrist as well :).

@KerickOrland You have to understand that for muslims there is no history before Islam and for Turks on top of it there is no local history in Minor Asia before the 1200s.. . By the way, Matzikert in 1071 was a Byzantine victory - only thing, the Emperor was betrayed, then 20 years later Alexios Komnenos accepted the influx of Turks in eastern-central Minor Asia. @AngloSaxonBob I can agree to an extent. The language in Asia minor was Greek and ethnically Greek as Greece colonized the region. In this aspect, I concur that the Byzantine empire was Greek and can be considered a Greek empire. If one looks at it from another aspect, then it would be Roman as it was conquered by them as well as Greece and much of the ME. With the division of the empire and the later fall of the Western half, the Greeks in the Eastern half became recipients of the Roman legacy.
@Chaldean442 The Greeks certainly considered themselves to be the heirs of Roman tradition but were considered by everyone else to be Greeks and nothing else. After the Hereclean reforms the Empire became as Greek in character as it was in ethnicity, whilst during the Palaeologos rule (1259-1453) the Greeks began to see themselves as more Greek than Roman again. I agree that the Empire is a direct continuation of the Roman Empire but it wasn't very Roman or Latin for most of its history.

No the mongol empire was the largest land empire in history, but in terms of total land mass and area under control the largest empire in all of history was the British empire
@maXiturkey Get over it turkish bastard, your empire is lost and know you´re a shitty country begging to be part of Europe, the same continent you tried to destroy so many times!!! Fuck your shithole!!
Byzantium can be seen as a Roman body (administration), with Greek heart (ethnic consciousness of the major group) and Greek mind (sciences) but with its soul to the East (religion, music, culture).
However it was not a Greek Empire, it was a multinational one including 10s of nations. And it was not even run only by Greeks - be it they were the major powerhouse - actually half of Emperors and most of military commanders were Armenians, a fact little known!
Good point .why East religion? Jerusalem was in the territory of the Empire. For music thinks are complicated. When you say East you mean today Midle East?Armenia pay the price of Netrual zone vs Sassanids Catherine the Great was Austrian so
The problem i can say was this Religius conflicts prohibit the use of Greek (as a false statement of paganism)but all other kindogms and empires of that time call it Greek Empire. For example Byzantine is the name of the capital before rename it by Konstantine
i make a wrong writing.Armenia was a part of the Byzantine Empire but too bad for them play a role of neutral zone of that time but even if it was not Romaioi take the example with Cathreine she ruled Russia as a true Russian instead of an Austrian
historians call them Byzantines there real name is Imperios Orreintals Ramanos (latin for the Eastern Roman Empire) there Greco Roman they spoke Greek studied ancient Greek but the rest is Roman the only reason there called Byzantines is because Constantinople was a Greek city called Byzantium
Not worth the title Romans? But it was Romans themselves that could not survive due to their weaknesses and could only survive via the Greek-speaking east.
In anway, the Byzantine army of 600-1000 A.D. was 10 times more effective than the earlier legion system (they would chop them up for breakfast...).
again..not worth the name.Rome is the foundation of modern civilization.I love history and i am studing history i do not disparage anyone .. please don't be angry 8)
Byzantium is something else .. the inheritance of a great empire .. of the Roman Empire ..but...never mind.
Faber, leave aside those affirmations and see for yourself: The Byzantine Empire IS the basis for the European civilisation in ways you cannot imagine. If Rome was the basis then why beytween 400 A.D. and 1400 A.D. we did not see much going on?
Did Russians (one of the greatest civilisations) or other Slavs meet the old Romans or something?
There is lack of knowledge and a lot of misconceptions about Byzantines. Catholics and muslims were their enemies, they viewed them negatively in history
Good point but Emperor Constantine relocate capital of Roman Empire ..the name Roman dosent meant the city any more.Byzantium is the Child of Roman Empire ,Greek world and Cristianity.Byzantium named because German Empire wanted the name hahaha
There is a reason that the Emperor Heraclius changed the official language of the Roman empire from latin to Greek. It is because most of the people surrounding Constantinople were Greek speaking including anatolia, cyprus, Greece and southern balkans. Greek was also the language of trade in the middle east.
The 2head eagle pre-existed as a sign in Minor Asia but was adopted first by the Komnenii family in mid-late 11th century. However it was not before the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1204,and the creation of 3 independent Greek states that this flag became really a universal symbol for Eastern Romans. It symbolises Konstantinopolis looking east and west.
The symbol was used also by Russians even by Seljuk Turks (as some Sultans were in reaility Byzantine Komnenoi!)
Very True for example why Osman (Founder of Othoman Empire)his family flee to Byzantine lands after mongol invasion and the official symbol of the Empire was the XP
I am quoting from a History Book: A HISTORY OF THE WESTERN WORLD.
Chapter 4,The New Europe:
"The history of the Byzantine Empire began when Constantine moved his capital in 330 to Byzantium on the Bosporus.renamed it Constantinople, and worked to make it a 2nd Rome. By this move the eastern part of the empire gained a capital and within a few years was permanently separated from the empire in the West.Theodosius(379-395) was the last emperor to rule over a united empire....
....in the 6th century the Byzantine empire entered the phase that would transform its institutions and make its culture distinct from that in the West. Also in the 6th century Latin began to be replaced by Greek, and soon men were to speak of the Latin West and the Greek East.
JUSTINIAN
Ascending the throne in 527 was the great Justinian who ruled until 565 and who was the last Byzantine emperor who was Roman in thought and Latin in speech.
...Contrary to the unfavorable opinion of the contemporary historian Procopius,Justinian was obviously intelligent,ambitious,gifted as a military leader;
After gaining complete mastery of Constantinople and assembling a well-trained army of heavy cavalry (cataphracti)
equipped with borrows and arrows,Justinian was ready to launch his campaign to reconquer the West.
..he defeated the Vandals, restored northen Africa. The conquest of Ostrogothic Italy until 552.And Visigothic Spain by 552.
There is no such thing as Byzantium. The so called Byzantines called themselves Romaioi as they do even today. H Ρωμανία κι αν πέρασεν ανθεί και φέρει κι άλλο.
Unless the Romans commited genocide on the Greeks, The Byzantine empire is a Greek empire. And that's how their contemporaries called it. It was named Byzantine in the 15th cent. by the German historian Hieronymus Wolf who wanted to write the medieval Greek history without having to talk about the classic Greek history. In the 7th century Greek became the official language (the language in which the emperor took his title). But people never stopped speaking Greek. Google Byzantine Empire wiki
yes when the romans came to greece on their conquest of europe, they found true greatness and high culture with all thegreat temples build by the greeks, that they took over their religion and many romans went to athens and to the university of athens
actually, italy was influenced by the byzantines or the roman empire before the fourth crusade. Italy had previously been under the control of the roman empire and the construction of Saint Marks basilica is of byzantine architecture. The venicians also traded extensively with the Byzantine empire.
I didnt learn this in schools i read many books and articles. I know that romans are big influenced by greeks. Romans are for me greeks too and greeks are for me romans, at least the greeks after the romans conquerd greece.
Greeks and romans have in my opinion the most interesting history. The Roman Empire should have had the name Roman-Greek Empire, it had the the knowledege of the greeks and the military power of the romans, and the same is the byzantine empire.
The byzantines always called themselves romans and they always called their empire Imperium Romanum. I know that there was never a byzantinum, no they always called themselve romans. Byzantines are both, romans and greeks. Even the ancient romans stole greek culture and combined it with roman warfare.
Yeah i totaly agree. In the end the Romans were the defender of christianity, the catholich fought almost only for gold and power like you said.
But altough this points the byzantine cataphract isnt compareable with a knigth, he is a normal cavalry men. A knight of the west claims at least to fight for god.
There wasnt never a byzantine Empire. The byzantines always called themselve romans, they always called their empire Imperium Romanum. Only the late byzantines spoke greek. But even the ancient romans were big influenced by greece, and the byzantines much more so all in all i would say, Byzantium is ROME AND GREECE. Byzantium is the successor of Rome, of his culture, warfare and conventions.
Yep because the Imperium Romanum was always the roman empire, its east rome which never fell even when the westroman empire fell.
But even ancient romans were big influenced by greeks, so in my opinion they arent only romans, they are greeks too. So they right name should be somthing like greek-roman empire.
The catahpracts of Byzantium arent comareable with knights. Cataphracts were only heavily armored cavalry with maces, swords and bows. Knights were heavy cavalry armed with lances and swords who fougth for values like god, fairness, etc...
Byzantium or better said Imperium Romanum had never knights....They didnt fougth false wars like the catholic crusades or the islamic djihads.
The word «Byzantine» is a misnomer. The people we learnt to call «Byzantines» never new this word. They called themselves «Romeoi»(the Greek word for 'Romans'). Their empire, seated in Constantinople, was called by itself and in documents of other contemporary states (such as Franks, Venetians, Persians) as THE ROMAN EMPIRE.
The idea that to be "Roman" you have to be from Rome falls apart as soon as you look up the fact that some of the Empire's greatest monarchs and leaders were born far from Rome. Trajanus and Constantine for example. The Byzantines were the Romans, Romans who traced their descendants back to Constantine, Octavian, Pericles, and Alexander. They spoke a Hellenic tongue that had been the lingua franca of the Eastern mediterranean for centuries before hand. They were Rome, as they always shall be
The Byzantines were Greek. It was part of the Roman empire because the head of the church was nominally in Rome but the Byzantines were not Italian or Roman. Their language was Greek and their culture was Greek. So get it right. You ignorant primitive.
The Byzantines were never Greek. They were Romans of a Hellenized Christian Empire. If you would go back in time and ask a Byzantine if he was a Greek he/she would be most indignant. Learn some history before you spout nonsense you insipid jizz swallowing monkey.
Not at all Greek was a forbiden word because in the medieval days mean the paganists...That time never was exist Byzantine as pinpoint of Ethnicity or Empire ...they Called Romioi(Who means Romans)
Roman empire, Basilea ton Romaion, this was the name of the empire. It wasen`t called "Greek Empire" or "Byzantine", this was not the thrue name, it was Roman Empire. Romans = all roman citizen regardless theyr ethnicity (greeks, armenians, egyptians, romance, so on).
ohh ye..but when the years past, centuries go throught, the culture and the costum changed slowlly beyond the Byzantine empire, but obviouslly they turn to their the ancient culure like Hellas and brought to to the present, like the employ of the language(greek replacing the latin language) , army, education, and so many things of legacy to take us important.
You need to talk to the Emperor Constantine about who changed what my friend. He and Justinian Kept the Empire intact it wasnt until it went back to Rome and a brief period with Charlamange that the West started its downfall and blamed the East.First with a Schism/Filloque/Crusade/you cannot change History ask Pope John Paul II if he was alive ,May his Blessed Memory be Eternal
Byzantine left to be romans when Justiniano died and roman fleets left the nothern african territory..futhermore, they took over the latin language and became to speak a greek language, thats mean they are not roman again. i don't concern them as romans
Constantinoypolis was the capital of Roman state (Nova Rome).Greek was speaking every day even from Jesus Crist days .Latin was the official. The Right name was Roman Eastern Empire the Byzantine name was giving from the West after Carmaganus to make the German Empire(Holy Roman Empire)
They may not be 'true' romans but they certainly are part of the romano-greco tradition that includes ancient rome, Alexander and the ancient greeks city states.
The latins was oficial Language of the Eastern empire(Byzantine) until 734AD if i remeber right. The Byzantines was profecional militand, they almost never have the Feudal system Knighthood(you can say a litle like the Samurais)
really impressive. but, you know how much the byzantines hated the Latins. i guess the byzantine knights wouldn't be pleased to hear latin on their video soundtrack. loool.
The latins was oficial Language of the Eastern empire(Byzantine) until 734AD if i remeber right. The Byzantines was profecional militand, they almost never have the Feudal system Knighthood(you can say a litle like the Samurais)
well, yes, agree, the Byzantine empire actually entitled itself the Eastern Roman empire. still, after Heraklios it became more and more greek. i was referring in the previous comment at the famous quote from Lukas Notaras (after the Synod of Ferarra- Florence 1439- i guess), that "we'd rather see in Constantinople the Turkish turban than the Latin tiara". actually they started to terribly hate eachother after the 4th Crusade.
It is not Entitled The capital of Rome Relocate to the city of Byzantium and rename for his honor from the last Emperor of united roman Empire Constantin the Great. The truth about the 4 Crusade is.They was exomunicate from the pope before arive Constanoupolis.maybe it was a setup!?!to give the last hit to byzantine empire

Byzantium can be seen as a Roman body (administration), with Greek heart (ethnic consciousness of the major group) and Greek mind (sciences) but with its soul to the East (religion, music, culture).
However it was not a Greek Empire, it was a multinational one including 10s of nations. And it was not even run only by Greeks - be it they were the major powerhouse - actually half of Emperors and most of military commanders were Armenians, a fact little known!
papagamias 2 years ago
Good point .why East religion? Jerusalem was in the territory of the Empire. For music thinks are complicated. When you say East you mean today Midle East?Armenia pay the price of Netrual zone vs Sassanids Catherine the Great was Austrian so
knighttemplar6 2 years ago
The problem i can say was this Religius conflicts prohibit the use of Greek (as a false statement of paganism)but all other kindogms and empires of that time call it Greek Empire. For example Byzantine is the name of the capital before rename it by Konstantine
knighttemplar6 2 years ago
i make a wrong writing.Armenia was a part of the Byzantine Empire but too bad for them play a role of neutral zone of that time but even if it was not Romaioi take the example with Cathreine she ruled Russia as a true Russian instead of an Austrian

when did the Byzantines (Romans) adopt the two headed egal and why?

Byzantines! not Romans...
Byzantine Empire after 5.century is not worth the name Roman.Byzánt
FaberOSK 2 years ago
historians call them Byzantines there real name is Imperios Orreintals Ramanos (latin for the Eastern Roman Empire) there Greco Roman they spoke Greek studied ancient Greek but the rest is Roman the only reason there called Byzantines is because Constantinople was a Greek city called Byzantium
tuskin4 2 years ago
Not worth the title Romans? But it was Romans themselves that could not survive due to their weaknesses and could only survive via the Greek-speaking east.
In anway, the Byzantine army of 600-1000 A.D. was 10 times more effective than the earlier legion system (they would chop them up for breakfast...).
papagamias 2 years ago
again..not worth the name.Rome is the foundation of modern civilization.I love history and i am studing history i do not disparage anyone .. please don't be angry 8)
Byzantium is something else .. the inheritance of a great empire .. of the Roman Empire ..but...never mind.
FaberOSK 2 years ago
Faber, leave aside those affirmations and see for yourself: The Byzantine Empire IS the basis for the European civilisation in ways you cannot imagine. If Rome was the basis then why beytween 400 A.D. and 1400 A.D. we did not see much going on?
Did Russians (one of the greatest civilisations) or other Slavs meet the old Romans or something?
There is lack of knowledge and a lot of misconceptions about Byzantines. Catholics and muslims were their enemies, they viewed them negatively in history
papagamias 2 years ago
Good point but Emperor Constantine relocate capital of Roman Empire ..the name Roman dosent meant the city any more.Byzantium is the Child of Roman Empire ,Greek world and Cristianity.Byzantium named because German Empire wanted the name hahaha
knighttemplar6 2 years ago
It is always Roman.
vasilisv 2 years ago
There is a reason that the Emperor Heraclius changed the official language of the Roman empire from latin to Greek. It is because most of the people surrounding Constantinople were Greek speaking including anatolia, cyprus, Greece and southern balkans. Greek was also the language of trade in the middle east.
nickpafras 2 years ago
Why do you think that one of the Words to describe the Greek language in Turkish is "Rumca" which means Roman.
nickpafras 2 years ago
The 2head eagle pre-existed as a sign in Minor Asia but was adopted first by the Komnenii family in mid-late 11th century. However it was not before the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1204,and the creation of 3 independent Greek states that this flag became really a universal symbol for Eastern Romans. It symbolises Konstantinopolis looking east and west.
The symbol was used also by Russians even by Seljuk Turks (as some Sultans were in reaility Byzantine Komnenoi!)
papagamias 2 years ago
makes sense Constantinoplis was known to be between the east and west
tuskin4 2 years ago

Jame243 2 years ago
....in the 6th century the Byzantine empire entered the phase that would transform its institutions and make its culture distinct from that in the West.
Jame243 2 years ago
...Contrary to the unfavorable opinion of the contemporary historian Procopius,Justinian was obviously intelligent,ambitious,gifted as a military leader;
Jame243 2 years ago
..Visigothic Spain..only the south eastern coast and by 555 boasted that he had restored the empire."END

Google Byzantine Empire wiki

yes when the romans came to greece on their conquest of europe, they found true greatness and high culture with all thegreat temples build by the greeks, that they took over their religion and many romans went to athens and to the university of athens
gaastra12 2 years ago 4
Yea im exactly the same opinion. Byzantium is the Imperium Romanum.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
I know that all....But i meant the West and East Roman Empire, not the frankish and he byzantine empire. The west roman empire fell in AD 476.
I know that the roman empire was big influenced by the hellens. In my opinion the imperium romanum are greeks and romans.
Hellens (greeks) and romans are the nations which are fascinating me at most.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
actually, italy was influenced by the byzantines or the roman empire before the fourth crusade. Italy had previously been under the control of the roman empire and the construction of Saint Marks basilica is of byzantine architecture. The venicians also traded extensively with the Byzantine empire.
ignacio90 2 years ago
I didnt learn this in schools i read many books and articles. I know that romans are big influenced by greeks. Romans are for me greeks too and greeks are for me romans, at least the greeks after the romans conquerd greece.
Greeks and romans have in my opinion the most interesting history. The Roman Empire should have had the name Roman-Greek Empire, it had the the knowledege of the greeks and the military power of the romans, and the same is the byzantine empire.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
The byzantines always called themselves romans and they always called their empire Imperium Romanum. I know that there was never a byzantinum, no they always called themselve romans. Byzantines are both, romans and greeks. Even the ancient romans stole greek culture and combined it with roman warfare.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
Yeah i totaly agree. In the end the Romans were the defender of christianity, the catholich fought almost only for gold and power like you said.
But altough this points the byzantine cataphract isnt compareable with a knigth, he is a normal cavalry men. A knight of the west claims at least to fight for god.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
There wasnt never a byzantine Empire. The byzantines always called themselve romans, they always called their empire Imperium Romanum. Only the late byzantines spoke greek. But even the ancient romans were big influenced by greece, and the byzantines much more so all in all i would say, Byzantium is ROME AND GREECE. Byzantium is the successor of Rome, of his culture, warfare and conventions.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
the byzantine empire or like you call them, the Imperium Romanum, had greek as its national language by the 7th century. is that "late"?
ignacio90 2 years ago
Yep because the Imperium Romanum was always the roman empire, its east rome which never fell even when the westroman empire fell.
But even ancient romans were big influenced by greeks, so in my opinion they arent only romans, they are greeks too. So they right name should be somthing like greek-roman empire.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
The catahpracts of Byzantium arent comareable with knights. Cataphracts were only heavily armored cavalry with maces, swords and bows. Knights were heavy cavalry armed with lances and swords who fougth for values like god, fairness, etc...
Byzantium or better said Imperium Romanum had never knights....They didnt fougth false wars like the catholic crusades or the islamic djihads.
AustGeneral 2 years ago
well, it was for a loong time, and thats why many influences of byzantine knowledge came into italian states like venice

They were Rome, as they always shall be
Damiarch 3 years ago
The Byzantines were Greek. It was part of the Roman empire because the head of the church was nominally in Rome but the Byzantines were not Italian or Roman. Their language was Greek and their culture was Greek. So get it right. You ignorant primitive.
adalake 2 years ago
The Byzantines were never Greek. They were Romans of a Hellenized Christian Empire. If you would go back in time and ask a Byzantine if he was a Greek he/she would be most indignant. Learn some history before you spout nonsense you insipid jizz swallowing monkey.
Damiarch 2 years ago
Not at all Greek was a forbiden word because in the medieval days mean the paganists...That time never was exist Byzantine as pinpoint of Ethnicity or Empire ...they Called Romioi(Who means Romans)

Byzantine left to be romans when Justiniano died and roman fleets left the nothern african territory..futhermore, they took over the latin language and became to speak a greek language, thats mean they are not roman again. i don't concern them as romans
legioVmacedonica 3 years ago
Constantinoypolis was the capital of Roman state (Nova Rome).Greek was speaking every day even from Jesus Crist days .Latin was the official. The Right name was Roman Eastern Empire the Byzantine name was giving from the West after Carmaganus to make the German Empire(Holy Roman Empire)

Colts4ever123 3 years ago
Not really, but the sicilians were an interesting mix of cultures in the medieval time.
Camilo83 3 years ago
no one cares what you 'concern them' buddy
all respectable historians recognize the roman herritage of the eastern roman empire in law, culture, science, ideology and institutions
and BTW, the east spoke greek from the time of alexander
they did not pick it up after justiniane or anyone else died
the empire was limited to the east and it asumed for administrative purposes the language that was prevalent in the east

well, yes, agree, the Byzantine empire actually entitled itself the Eastern Roman empire. still, after Heraklios it became more and more greek. i was referring in the previous comment at the famous quote from Lukas Notaras (after the Synod of Ferarra- Florence 1439- i guess), that "we'd rather see in Constantinople the Turkish turban than the Latin tiara". actually they started to terribly hate eachother after the 4th Crusade.
