  • there not real maiko you can tell beause their obi knot is just a clip on, their also wearing the wrong hair ornaments for the season, you can see the the area where the wig line and also the wig is too big oh and the boxes they use to hold their things in are empty and they are having trouble with their okobo

  • They are Geisha in training . These are Junior maiko which are in performance makeup so they can greet the public. They are usually out now during the day for the tourist trade because they are a dying culture, and they are trying to preserve it by making it more well known.

  • Having a purse does not mean that they are tourists.

And some don't go to school during the daytime because some have customers.

My friend is a Geiko in Kyoto.

  • Everything just screams maiko henshin >___>''

  • Those maikos are tourists!

Fake maikos of tourists like them walk slowly and do not to decline stopping for photographers.

  • they dont look graceful like whatsoever.....

  • they are beautiful i fell in love with the movie and book memoirs of a geisha and ever since have become very fascinated with them and their world

  • I love them!!!!!!! Perla.

  • これは舞妓はんやね。

Maiko (about 15-20age) is a student of Geiko.

    Geiko(over20) is a professional person(graduated of Maiko).

My ancestor has managed Okiya(a Geiko or Maiko house) in Kyoto from the Edo to Showa period(16??~1960s).

  • @minimal1311 Wow, that's really impressive! What part of Kyoto was the okiya in?

  • @minimal1311 変身した観光客です。how funny that one of these henshin studio is using my family's mon as the crest on the bottom of the obi! If only a real okiya would use maruni mokkou I would visit it ^_^

  • 彼らは、非常に繊細な人々の美しさ。ありがとう

  • hi i am sorry if this is a stupid question but why is it that geisha's bow are cover on the back of there kimono

  • the fabric there gowns are made of is so beautiful.

  • non sono geishe sono maiko....

  • real maikos dont have to do their own hair anymore, its a choice. so if some are wearin wigs , they are allowed to now

  • @judgesdaughter You are wrong on th at real maiko must use theyre hair to tie up the hairstyle, but they ahve hair extansion in it as for that they dont have neough hair on theyre own to ahve the eloborate and huge hairstyle( its 10 cm tall) but geiko and geisha (Tokyo) wears a shimada wig.

  • yes you can tell these are tourist

  • like someone from a different time and place , very lovely

  • all these westerners thinking they know more than the Japanese about their own culture.... pathetic...

  • Yes, they are indeed fake maiko. Very pretty, though. But I wish that some maiko henshin looked a little better!

  • They r fake maiko. I can tell that they r wearing a wig.

  • All of u are right in some way. Another way u can tell they are tourists is because they have a wig on. Only Geiko wear wigs (katsura). Also their makeup is noway near the makeup Geiko and Maiko wear. Trust me cuz i do Kabuki dance and the makeup has to be done better than shown on the video.

  • Make up, Obi, walking, purse..They are tourists. Real Maiko(15~20 yrs old) and Geiko ("Geisha" is only in Tokyo) go to school for lessons in the daytime without makeup. After that they make up & wear gorgeous Kimono etc and walk quickly away for work at night.

  • true, but you can find Geishas also in Kyoto. And there make-up isnt don right. Theire lip have to become smaller then the are in real life.

  • @ningboning True, I'm glad to see someone who knows once in awhile, I usually read stupid comments from smart asses who think they know everything ww

And what's up with people calling them geishas, or geisha girls, wth, it's just geisha「芸者」(tokyou)/geiko「芸子」 and maiko「舞妓」 witch is the apprentice

and okaasan お母さん literally meaning mother, is their mentor/trainer etc.

  • @SilverGunZoO Its just that when people see tourist that dress up as maiko or geiko they callt hem either geisha girls (refers to that they are not real) or henshin dress ups/henshin maiko/geiko etc.....

In Tokyo you are correct they are called geisha and hangyoku (apprentices) and geiko and maiko in Kyoto,

  • their culture is so beautiful.

  • They are tourists. Geisha and Maiko usually only walk alone, and they seem to be having trouble with their geta.

And they are stopping for pictures with a cameraman in tow.

  • You mixed it all up. Maiko is geisha bellow 20 and geiko is older geisha. But they are beautiful, anyway! <3

  • rating this down was a complete accident. xD

  • they are not geishas

    they are maikos

  • yes.

    They are tourists.

  • ireckon theyre people who hired outfits

cuz geisha's/maiko walk differently in their shoes ,these women walk like normal people

    Geisha's/Maiko's shuffle a bit.

I have their shoes. its hard to walk in

  • niceeeeeeee works

  • They are not real Geisha. Their makeup and kimono clash.

  • I wanna go to kyoto!

  • w-ever like this video ty 4

  • maiko not geisha

  • maiko is a geisha

  • No.

A Maiko is a Geisha in training.

They are not full Geisha yet.

  • hmmmm

  • the word "Geisha" is never used in KYOTO. It's usually used in TOKYO(Edo). KYOTO people use "Geiko" instead of "Geisha".

And "Maiko" is a trainee of "Geiko".

  • wow, i am amazed, the shoes look so heavy! they make Kyoto look amazing because they are the only ones dressing so colorful. they are beautiful, what a sight.

  • awesome. That is so amazing. The shoes are kool 2. I love geisha. they are so kool. their kimono are pretty.

  • there are maikos

  • are you taking the maiko?

  • as mishkuu says, you can be a 'geisha' for a day, you dress up and walk around kyoto. don't think a real one would be walking around the tourist sites quite like this with an umbrella during the day time

  • It's also highly unlikely that anyone dressing up would be able to walk around in the full Kimono of a Maiko which takes an hour or more to put on, and be able to walk gracefully in high wooden clogs.

  • Geisha must get tired of people flocking to them all the time...they look like they get rather agitated...ha they are so pretty!

  • ya sorry these arent real maiko - and yes its maiko. in kyoto there are many places where they dress you up as either a maiko (apprent. geisha) or a geisha. the real girls do not walk around in the middle of the day - they are very discreet. (i saw 2 maiko going into a restaurant at night, from a taxi with tinted windows) oh ya, i did the maiko transformation too and was in kyoto..

  • And can you walk in full kimono and high wooden clogs on cobblestone like a Maiko for a day?

  • well i did....so tourists, shame but heh that's life!

  • it also says on the sign in Japanese, 'geisha dressed people wait here for escort'!

  • it also says on the back of the kimono 'this kimono must be returned on the same day and must be dry cleaned before return'!!!!!!! er don't think these people are quite what it seems!!!!!

  • "Maiko is a Geisha that lives in Kyoto"

How can you say that...GO READ ABOUT IT A LITTLE MORE.

    MAIKO are apprentice geisha...

  • They are not maikoes.

The tourist takes off the maiko

  • Maiko is a Geisha that lives in Kyoto. The only difference is they do not have to get a danna to support them. they can live the lifestyle they want with some restrictions.

  • In Kyoto, geisha are called geiko. A maiko is an apprentice geiko. A maiko's life is more restricted than that of a full geiko.

  • Where did you read that geisha's where protitutes?

  • In world war 2 the Japanese economy was destroyed along with the gov.The common prostitutes started dressing like geisha, and no one would enforce the laws that kept the occupation pure from impersonators. The US men occupying the island thought that every girl with white make up was a geisha and that's why Americans think geisha is synonymous with prostitute.

  • What would americans know? Their knowledge of the world is very limited, many have never moved from their own states...

  • Be careful of stereotypes; they make you sound uneducated and are always wrong.

  • Correction: Stereotypes are not always wrong and of course the truth would frequently hurt!As for education, it is often misinterpreted for wisdom, common sense, experience and even skill.

  • Well if that's what your parents taught you then I obviously cannot ask you to open your mind to other points of view. So I leave you to your ignorance and continue on the road to understanding. Feel free to join any time.

  • I rather feel that judging and labelling someone as 'ignorant' may indeed be ignorance in itself. Understanding?

  • Don't bother with that person - they're showing every characteristic of a weaboo. Like, denouncing other countries to say that one is superior.

Don't get me wrong - I love foreign cultures, but blindly loving Japan while pretending they are a perfect country is ridiculous. People, Japan has its flaws. It doesn't make you look racist or whatever to admit it - but it DOES make you look like an ignorant fool to say that Japan can do no wrong.

  • I beg to disagree. Americans move from their states to start a war or just rape females from other countries. ^^,

  • Oh, would you just shut up? Why don't we start stereotyping the Philippines?

  • but do yourself a favor before you make positive statements, go there and see for yourself, the difficult part as an american(generalizing again) may be admitting to what you witness..by the way I think your nickname is cool..have a good one.

  • And your point is what, in that people haven't moved? So fucking what? What about most Japanese people who have never left Japan and are xenophobes? If you're going to stereotype, at least know what the hell you're talking about.

You're probably picking the worst country to say "doesn't know about the world". I hate to say it, but Japan, a rather isolated island, takes the cake for that - but once again, not everyone is like that there, so basing your opinion of a whole country is wrong.

  • Many many Japanese have roamed the world, gaining a lot of knowledge in the process. Have you seen them with their cameras..? Have you heard of 'generalizing'?? It is something we all do (including you) and that we all need to do, it does not mean that every person in the USA for example has never traveled..hmm? Of course like other countries Japan has problems....

  • ya know what notyourdollie then i guess u always wanna be right you fugly whore

  • Geisha are NOT hookers! Grr...

  • geiko and maiko would never soil their rep by sleeping with a man. only Oiran and tayuu were like hookers. do your research before youanswer a question completely wrong.

  • That is a horrible thing to say.

  • Have you considered reading something called a book.

  • you can also tell if they are real or not by the way they walk, these girls walked way to slow to be real maiko. if they walked at the pace those girls were they would never get anywhere. another thing is that these girls held their umbrella's awkwardly, not as gracefully.

  • DrowElfMorwen is right on the bulls eye fake wannabe maiko

  • they are Maiko henshin wearing wigs :-)

  • anyway.. if they are or not geishas, are not who can look more beautiful dressed like that, as a japanese woman! sorry my english T-T

  • Sorry about my ignorance, But how do you know??

  • Lovely kimono, but unfortunately, these girls are just tourists. Dresing up as geisha or maiko is a very common Japanese pastime in Kyoto. I did it ^^

  • Thanks for the clarification

  • These are not geisha or maiko. These are just girls dressed up.
