We do have talent out there these days but it is often hard to locate up under all the booty shaking, nasty lyrics, auto-tuned crap that is most prevalent. When they sing I feel like I'm at home in my kitchen listening to the frown-ups talk when I'm supposed to be in bed. They seem so natural and even among the real talent that we do have out there today they are over produced and managed till you can hardly hear their real voice or know who they really are.

He always knew what he was (a black man) its just some people really didn't understand what he was going through. Because of racism, at times things were really rough for him but he wheathered the storm and in the end came out on top! Also, thanks to people like Frank Sinatra who stood by him and supported Sammy.

Sammy is a very talented man, I will give him that. But soulful he is not. Aretha sounds Great but Sammy sounds like a white man imitating a black man, a very awful imitation. From my understanding, Barry Gordy didn't want to sign Aretha to Motown for the simple fact that she had too much of a gospel sound and that her voice couldn't cross over and thats how she was signed to Atlantic records. And after all her albums hitting number 1's on the chart (more than Motown Artists was), he then wanted to buy Aretha out of her contract with Atlantic records and sign her over to Motown and she wouldn't do it. And that's how the more money issue came into play. Smart Move!!!

The reason Aretha never signed with Motown was because her father wanted her to sign with a more established record company. So Aretha signed with Columbia, which at the time was the biggest record company in the world at that time before Motown made a splash. Aretha said in a recent interview that she was kind of glad she didn't sign with Motown because of money issues.

But, CL Franklin wanted Aretha to go big time just like any parent given that Columbia was probably considered the Harvard of record companies. Motown was in existence when Aretha came along. Aretha recorded with JVB/Battle Records because this is where her father recorded his sermons & gospel vocal records. Motown and RCA offered her a contract, but she elected to sign with Columbia Records and then later, Atlantic Records. Aretha wanted her own sound, and Atlantic Records allowed her to establish her own music. Motown was a "controling" label. You had to sing what they wanted you to sing. Aretha was not to be stifled nor controled

Sammy is a very talented man, I will give him that. But soulful he is not. Aretha sounds Great but Sammy sounds like a white man imitating a black man, a very awful imitation. He is not singing he is yelling trying to sound soulful. It's not his fault tho, he had to be white in that world or he wouldn't have made it. He is a legend, just lost touch with where he came from or was afraid to not show it at all. I know this comment is going to get me cussed out so let's hear it.

From my understanding, Barry Gordy didn't want to sign Aretha to Motown for the simple fact that she had too much of a gospel sound and that her voice couldn't cross over and thats how she was signed to Atlantic records. And after all her albums hitting number 1's on the chart (more than Motown Artists was), he then wanted to buy Aretha out of her contract with Atlantic records and sign her over to Motown and she wouldn't do it. And that's how the more money issue came into play. Smart Move!!!

Aretha is soul sister number One. Aretha is what you call a STONE SINGER,that woman can sing for me anyday. She was back then to most people what Whitney Houston is by todays standards of singing. Ask Whitney who she most admired when she was growing up in the the music world and i bet you she will say Aretha Franklin.

I didnt know that.Yes I did here that Columbia was big at that time Bigger than Motown Tommy Mottolia wasn't in charge Yet But I Heard that they Helped Aretha Alot She did no some of the Motown Artist and you are write she did say she met Berry Gordy But I dont know If she knows him Well. Aretha said that she grew up in the same neighborhood as Smokey and that she would got to the Motown studio to chat with Smokey and others artist. Aretha's sister worked at motown but i don't know what she did their.

Yes, Aretha lived approx 1 mile from Hitsville, as did I. Aretha and virtually all of the Motown Stars used to hang out around 12th Street, Hastings St, W Grand Blvd and Linwood Ave. They also frequented and/or performed at The 20 Grand, Baker's Keyboard Lounge, and The Greystone Lounge.

The reason Aretha never signed with Motown was because her father wanted her to sign with a more established record company. So Aretha signed with Columbia, which at the time was the biggest record company in the world at that time before Motown made a splash. Aretha said in a recent interview that she was kind of glad she didn't sign with Motown because of money issues.

@colin2680 Berry Gordy actully tried very hard to get Aretha to sign with Motown, she was already a well known singer on the gospel scene. But rest his soul, her father Rev CL Franklin was also a well known and respected in Detroit, and was not about to let her get caught up in that circle of drugs and alcohol over at Motown. Once she met Clive Davis who signed her to Columbia records, she became a superstar

@colin2680 Yes she did know Diana Ross, Diana stayed only a block away from her and they knew one another throught Smokey. Also she did know Michael, Aretha use to be neighbors with the Jacksons when Aretha moved to L.A. in the late 70's/

@colin2680 She knew of all there of the Supremes, they lived just a block from her and also Flo's funeral was at Aretha's father churchs New Bethel Baptist Church. And Aretha was invited to Michael's memorial but she had to say no because she was she wouldn't have gotten there in time, since she doesn't fly anymore. Also she was at The Kennedy Center when Diana Ross was honored.

@bosshawg81 John Hammond signed her to Columbia. Of course Berry wanted Aretha. But, CL Franklin wanted Aretha to go big time just like any parent given that Columbia was probably considered the Harvard of record companies. While she didn't have a lot of hits she certainly learned a lot about making records at Columbia.

Motown was in existence when Aretha came along. Aretha recorded with JVB/Battle Records because this is where her father recorded his sermons & gospel vocal records. Motown and RCA offered her a contract, but she elected to sign with Columbia Records and then later, Atlantic Records. Aretha wanted her own sound, and Atlantic Records allowed her to establish her own music. Motown was a "controling" label. You had to sing what they wanted you to sing. Aretha was not to be stifled nor controled

Well let's just be thankful Atlantic got her because it's hard to imagine her records being any better on Motown. She sounds PHENOMENAL here. Her talent is mind-boggling. It's hard to believe someone could have been given such a gift.
And we haven't even gotten to her piano playing or songwriting.
