Now lets take this into a real situation. We have a 5watt amp and we have a 50 watt amp, we do the math doubling the wattage on the 5 watt, so 10w is 3db more than 5w. 20w is 6db than 5w. 40w is 9db more than 5w. 50w is 10db more than 5w. This is twice the perceived volume for the human ear. Now the speaker is 95db. 95db at 2w is 98db, at 4w is 101db, at 8w is 104db, at 16w it is 107db, at 32w is 110db, at 64w it is 113db. So to make a 5w amp as loud as a 50 you need a 412 with 103db sensitivity
To the people who think 5watts isnt enough. You have to use the formulas. 1st speaker sensitivity: the speaker in this combo is 95db at 1w measuring distance 1 meter (about 3.29ft) 2nd wattage increase: everytime you double wattage sound increases 3db. 3rd number of speakers: everytime you double the number of speakers you gain 3db. 4th tube amps are measured diferent: in the clean chanell or right before breakup that is the wattage they are rated for, ss have same volume clean or distorted.
when i've to refresh the ehm tubes? my friend, he plays in a quite pro-band, has an Engl and he's using his tube already for a few years without ever replacing it.. is this normal?
Do you know if it is powerful enough to facilitate Active Pickups, because I know for sure my 10w Transistor practise amp isn't :D Please reply I need to know!!
too many annoying so called musicians who talk out of their ASS!! I get tired of hearing about the 5 watt valve thing being too quiet??? valve amps are 3 times louder than a trans! ok! and btw, I have played in a venue with a 5 watt valve amp with a shure sm57, put through a PA System, it worked fine!! :)
Funny how much difference that extra 2 inches make ;)
I just bought this combo, should arrive tomorrow. I also play a S1-100 through either a Marshall 4x12 or Blackstar HT 2x12 cab. I'm expecting my HT-5 combo to sound pretty good through the 2x12 cab.
@LWRCftw I don't want to sound like a jerk but you're wrong. I've been recording, rehearsing and gigging with the HT-5. The only situation in which I needed "more" was when our Rythm guitarist plugged into a 100watt tube head with a 4x12. I hooked the HT-5 to a 4x12 as well and at 6,5-7 my drummer wanted me to turn it down! It's got plenty of volume for any situation, plus a Line Out with cab emulation to go direct to the mixing board, which sounds fantastic. If you like the tone, check it out!
@SoundborgTheBand Ah, OK. See, I have experience with low-watt solid state amps, and they're very quiet. Apparently tube amps sound louder because of low end harmonics, or something like that. I was wrong.
if you hooked this up to something with some passive pickups and all the way on US can you get a KSE/ August Burns Red reallllyy metal distortion tones?
I used to have a fender frontman 212r and i just got this today and it didnt impress me that much maybe its because i am used to two 12's but it didnt make me go wow?
Have u ever tried it iwth EMGs? 81/85? I have guitar with em and i would like to buy that amp and to play crunchy metal on it, what do u thiink abyout it?
@laripsspiral This has 2 preamp tubes, and I think one is the power stage, and it uses the Blackstar stompbox designs for preamp sounds, so does this get good tube saturation when cranked?
As a proud owner of a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb combo I have to say the tone of this amp is fuckin sick, I really cant imagine anyone in this price bracket looking anywhere else for their amp.
Thanks man for the review....I'm doing endless research into cheaper tube combos...this helped..still not sure to get this, or the bergeraa v22..any views yourself on this....by the way...terveysia porista :)
I have no experience of that amp. Blackstar now has an 1W version of the HT available, that might be worth checking out too, in case you're looking for bedroom amp.
@lukekkv A lot of people are getting the head and a Palmer Speaker Simulator so you can go direct to board with no mic or cab. I've heard some amazing results.
do you think you could get decent metal tones out of this with an overdrive in front? im not talking about brutal distortion for shreading i mean like lamb of god and metallcia stuff
@puppetmaster532 metallica and lamb of god hardley use any distortion at all so it is possible to get their kinda tones with just this amp, its quite an all round amp aswell
mm :) the sound at the end of the video was nice :)..was that only the combo again? or any additional dist device? and is this ISF control that effective?
people can either read payed reviews oir go and listen to the amp themselves..videos only tell you half the storey..i was looking to buy one until i went and played both e mini stack and the combo..the stack was better than the combo but over all they both were like i said..
You mean it sounds too bright or bassy in this video too?
Sure, it's a good idea to test it before buying, but e.g. in this video it sounds pretty much as it does in the room. It doesn't magically change into a completely different amp when recording it.
rockfreak611: Speaker type can make a big difference. I bought a 2x12 vertical slant cab from Lopo and the speakers I have loaded in are from Warehouse Guitar Speakers (Reaper & Retro 30, both 16 ohms for an 8 ohm cabinet). Granted, the amp will not keep up with a 100w amp but cranked up, you should be able to jam with a drummer with no problems. A 4x12 cab would make for a bigger sound.
how do you get such good harmonics ? i have a ht 5 head with the two 110 cabs and using a gibson lespaul custom, and i just cannot get harmonics like you can
I'd say this one. Why? because even though i love the beautiful sound orange amps can create, this one is superior in many ways. 2 Channels, 3 band EQ, ISF for extra EQ possibilities, FX Loop, etc. If you love the orange tone, get orange, otherwise get this baby and live happily for the rest of your life :)
For 5 watts, those amps are pretty loud. I just got the head version and a separate 2x12 cabinet. Worth every penny! The effects loop works great too. Just don't put any gain devices in the loop. Only put in things like: chorus, phaser, flanger, pitch shifter, delay, and reverb.
@sgmguitar Why not gain devices? I'd like to use the effects loop on this amp to connect preamps like an ADA MP-1 or even certain distortion pedals like the DIY Dr. Boogie.
The mic is a very cheap one, Wharfedale. Mixer is Mackie and soundcard is M-audio firewire solo. The mixer isn't necessary for the recording, it just happens to be there in between.
I think it shines when it comes to basic rock sounds. Cleans (without e.g. treble booster) are nothing to write home about, but they are not bad either. It is pretty quiet for me, but I don't play often with gain cranked. Have you tried moving away from the amp? If I use lots of gain and stand next to the amp it hisses like all amps do.
Wy did you reply to me saying "is it tube or not", and then post the same question? I can tell you for a fact it has some solid state parts, I'm just not sure where.
Either way its a great amp; wether it's all tube or not is just a technical consideration.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, it has an ECC83 (12AX7) and an 12BH7, which is similar to a 12AU7 preamp. The tubes are both preamp tubes, so incapable of producing the 5 watt rating. So is it solid state past the preamp section?
Etuasteessa on kai transistoritekniikkaa gainin lisäämiseksi. Laatuvehkeeltä vaikuttaa, keikkaillu en ole, joten siitä en osaa sanoa. G'n'R pitäisi taittua aika mallikkaasti.
technically its not got a true all valve signal path but not many newer "valve" amps have - most modern ones have a few fancy electronic bits - just look at the JVM - digital reverb etc... but I would not consider this to be a hybrid like the valvestate or valvetronic
this or the fender superchamp XD
also wich one reacts better with pedals?
wich one has better clean???
i cant choose :(

I have a couple of questions about this amp. I'm almost certainly going to get it, but I want to know what to expect :)
1) How well does it handle a light-distortion, punk-rock sort of sound?
2) What sort of variation on the cleans is there? A wide variety or just a few different sounds to choose from?
3) How well does it handle ultra-distorted heavy metal?
Thanks to anyone who answers :)

what were your settings for 3:18
jacktheguitarman 2 years ago
Sorry, it's been a while so I don't remember the settings.
laripsspiral 2 years ago
It is pretty quiet for me, but I don't play often with gain cranked. Have you tried moving away from the amp? If I use lots of gain and stand next to the amp it hisses like all amps do.

@coopdawg68 Check out my other vids, there's more Blackstar stuff.

Cool amp, but the guitar interests me more. :) Which pickups are you using there?

They're Tesla Plasma series.

Stupid question maybe, is this amp all valve/tube?? Thanks I need to know, people saying otherwise
UltimateGuitarist17 2 years ago
Wy did you reply to me saying "is it tube or not", and then post the same question? I can tell you for a fact it has some solid state parts, I'm just not sure where.
Either way its a great amp; wether it's all tube or not is just a technical consideration.

all tube baby
jacktheguitarman 2 years ago
when u were running through the extension cab did u have the internal speaker on too? is that possible?
asianaxeman 2 years ago
@asianaxeman I didn't have it on. It is possible to have it on if the Ohm's match up with the internal speaker.

Sounds great , even on youtube! Really nice amp and a great guitar.
I hope i'll be lucky enough to own one soon.
Thanx for the review!

I really like that green guitar.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
No, it has an ECC83 (12AX7) and an 12BH7, which is similar to a 12AU7 preamp. The tubes are both preamp tubes, so incapable of producing the 5 watt rating. So is it solid state past the preamp section?

Shut up!
UltimateGuitarist17 2 years ago
If you wanted to can you replace the valves with anything more powerful?
Lordgout 2 years ago
As far as I know, no.

Seems it has two preamp tubes and no power amp tubes....
Can someone explain this?
ubustang 2 years ago

I can't get over how good it sounds.

Hi, great amp but can it give us a blues tone thanks !
jawad1973 2 years ago
I don't know much about blues tones, but I think it has great low/medium gain tones too. Cleans could be better.
laripsspiral 2 years ago
Great demo. You make the amp sing.

Ja onhan toi täysputki?

:D
Jos kuulostaa hyvältä, onko sillä väliä?!?
Etuasteessa on kai transistoritekniikkaa gainin lisäämiseksi. Laatuvehkeeltä vaikuttaa, keikkaillu en ole, joten siitä en osaa sanoa. G'n'R pitäisi taittua aika mallikkaasti.
laripsspiral 2 years ago
Vitsi toi kuulostaa hyvältä. Onko toi oikeasti laatuvehje? :) Ite enimmiksee Gunnareita ja Rage Against The Machinea soittelen...

it is hybrid combo

Is this thing valve or solid state?
EuropeFactor 2 years ago
Its all valve!
GuitarRich2000 2 years ago
Apparently not, i asked a guy in the shop and he said its got valves in the preamp and power amp stage but there's tranny stuff in there too...
So it's neither all valve nor hybrid... I'd say it leans towards the all valve side though.
Nick184 2 years ago
technically its not got a true all valve signal path but not many newer "valve" amps have - most modern ones have a few fancy electronic bits - just look at the JVM - digital reverb etc... but I would not consider this to be a hybrid like the valvestate or valvetronic
