  • This video tells me that Engineers design things NOT in the 'Real World' or in 'Reality'. Hmmmm...

*** Check out my Blog about HVAC controls to learn more about Building Automation Systems. ***

  • From all these comments, I sure as hell hope you can't become an 'ac technician' in 6 months. A refrigeration mechanic is a years long apprenticeship like other core trades like plumbing and electrician, of which refrigeration/HVAC shares several skills/knowledge basics from.

  • @aeonlinear The making of a great tech takes time like fine wine.

  • I have the sentence "Represent On a wiring diagram" stuck in my head

  • Great info Thanks

  • @DIYPV Thanks for watching.

  • man... i gota become an ac tech... someone in my family became a tech and worked for the court house and he got the best benefits discounts everywhere he went and is now retired in a big ass house with brand new cars and everything.... he was always an asshole and still is i cant stand him but out of all the jobs out there that are in demand this hvac business doesn't look like its going anywhere soon (cuz almost everyone has an ac its always in demand),,, uploader do you have any advice for me?

  • @True2TheBlueYoViGang how long should a course to become an ac technician would take? im planing on skipping college and going to tech school... i have atended college for business administration but that was a joke and nobody ever cared about it in any position i applied for while studying for it so i dropped out. i want to go to a technical school... how long should a course take? 6mnths? is it to expensive? Im a quick learner and this seems to bea recession proof job so plz share...

  • @True2TheBlueYoViGang . in Australia , it takes 3 years at Tech school , one day a week . And you work for 4 years the days your not at tafe, its an apprenticeship a trade .

  • @willscomputerservice As long as you can make the coil voltage work for you.

  • Hey i need to run 2 120vac humidifiers on individual humidstats (diy from scratch). I have a 120v 24v transformer but i need a relay that will kick the humidifiers on and off at in a cooling manner. What relay should i use

  • @willscomputerservice There are a couple of ways you could make this work. You could use a four pin relay with a 24 volt coil to bring on the 120 volts to the humidifier or if you're using a line voltage humidistat then you won't need a relay at all.

  • @DrZarkloff i ordered single pole single throw normally open switches do you think those will work?

  • @willscomputerservice thank you for your help. I will send you photos of the final product

    :D

  • very good

  • Love your vids, but can you do step by step, seperate videos on superheat and sub cooling, with just a field piece, and not all this fancy stuff?

  • Good stuff!! You're going to be my cheat sheet in my Hvac/r class I'm taking.

  • @JilkyInc I hope that you did well on you exam.

  • how is the pay for an air conditioning tech?, i'm planning to move to texas soon

  • @profeair It all depends on your level of experience and expertise.

  • @DrZarkloff I Have a York 10 ton condenser Unit that uses 3 phase power. The voltage is 208/230-3-60hz

What size gauge wire would you recommend. I am planning to use #6 wire but just wanted to make sure it was not over kill.

  • @americansRNOTstupid I'd feel more comfortable with at least a #4.

  • Great Video, I don't think you could have made it any simpler then this.

  • @nick4033 Thanks for watching.

  • Talk about breaking it down. Great job! Now I gotta find the video that shows what everything does! lol

  • @GUYWITHICECREAM Thanks for watching.

  • i know it has beeen said but ill say it again "you should be a teacher" that was the most informative i have seen yet.

  • @findvoltage Thanks for the confidence.

  • Great Video, Really liked the way you showed everything in detail (Thanks DrZarkloff).

  • @mlunacantu Thanks for watching.

  • this episode brought a lot of light to my little knowledge of diagrams thanks drzarkloff

  • @locutz Thanks for watching.

  • hi dr.z can you make a video of old furnace with relays only. thanks

  • @rdelosreyes67 I have made videos on relays and contactors in the past. I'll keep this in mind for the next time I have to work on a furnace.

  • Capacitors and Diode's are more of the easier Ones to remember.

  • Thanks for taking your time to do all these videos Dr Z!

  • @Tex200950 Thanks for watching.

  • @memomota Thanks for watching.

  • @memomota fully agree. dr z is the man

  • I was just wanting to know if butt conectors would be a better choice in some applications than wire nuts? I like how butt conectors make it look like a neater job than wire nuts.Thank you for your videos you post. They are a great help I recomended your videos to my classmates in the HVAC classes I attend.

  • @stevieb030369 Most definitely. I prefer butt connectors, too.

  • Dr Zarkloff you are a genius all your videos are great!!! I wish there were teachers like you. keep up with the great videos.

  • @jimbola77 Thanks for watching.

  • Dr Zarkloff you are a genius your vids are all great!!! please keep up with the videos...

  • Sir- You have no idea how helpful your videos have been. I'm going to school for HVAC-R and I'm having a hard time understanding diagrams. We have even watched your videos in school. Thanks a million.

  • @amp710252853 Thanks for watching. I really appreciate that.

  • thank you sir! you have been very helpful.

  • @heylosir Thanks for watching.

  • how do i tell if it is a run or start compacitor

  • @jerry1rpr Usually the start capacitor rating will be over 100 mfd. Run caps will usually have rating under 100 mfd.

  • this man is real a teacher thanks

  • @yantur51 Thanks for the compliment.

  • thank u for your wisdom.

  • @kandypaint64 Thanks for the compliment.

  • is this a field for big men

  • @dr.Z im thinking about going into the field, and i dont know any thing about it, and i a big dude is it a career for big guys

  • @kandypaint64 Being big isn't bad as long as you're doing commercial refrigeration and air conditioning. I think that you'll find it a bit difficult to crawl around residential attics.

  • DrZarkloff, thantk you for suggestion! I think it would be a great service to us if you do a video showing how to do this. I suggested it when he fist came & didn't find a leak until he said it was leaking through the high pressure line valve, which he changed. But as I mentioned before it leaked freon again. I lost my trust in this technician.

  • DrZarkloff, thx for educating us w/ your videos. I've spent $500 & my ac is still not working. Per tech guy it's losing freon through evaporator although his leak detector doesn't detect any leak. The evaporator has never been distort and it looks very clean (almost like new), except for some rust on the sides where he thinks it's leaking. Well, since my sys is 14y old his remedy is for me to buy a new unit rather than buying another evap only under the suspicion of a leak. Your 2 cents please.

  • @DeNarbone You could try one of the HVAC stop leaks. I'm planning on doing a video on a couple of them soon.

  • @KOxDisturbance the only "drop-in" replacement for R12 is R134a. but you must retrofit the system because of the differences in pressures and characteristics between the to refrigerants. exp. you'll need to replace the service ports on your hard lines to R134a type, evaporator, receiver/accumulater dryer etc..

  • Im interested in signing up for HVAC tech classes but Im wondering if you need to be really good in mathematics to fully understand the whole thing.?

  • @spok209 If you can do basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division then you're good.

  • Can you demonstrate how to convert an r-12 unit into a r 414 if compatible? Maybe an r 22 unit into an r 414? Since the EPA has been barring the use of these refrigerants they will need to be converted on old units unless they are just used for scrap when they become a hassle for the owners. Maybe even this new refrigerant mix can be used to replace old r12 or r22 units? Any info? Thanks in advance your videos are excellent learning tools.

  • @KOxDisturbance R-414b, commonly known as Hot Shot, can be used as a drop in replacement for R-12. Although, R-414b cannot be used in automotive applications because of the butane that is in R-414b. There are a couple of drop in replacements for R-22.

For starters, there's R422a for low and medium temperature applications and there's R-422d for high temperature applications. Then there's NU-22.

  • @DrZarkloff Thanks. Do you know what if any type of drop ins CAN be used for automotive? Also where can we locate and differentiate between "B" common with "B" energize?

  • @KOxDisturbance I don't know of any good drop in replacements for automotive R12. Hot Shot has Butane in it so that's out of the question. I'm not really sure about what you mean by B common or B energise.

  • a three phase air conditioner? where did you take the outdoor parts of the video?

  • @YummyMercury It's a commercial Addison heat pump.

  • great job , thanks a lot .

  • can you make a vid of how to wire the t-stat and cond. in the Air handler on a straight cool system?

  • @Haze2c Please check out the HVAC Honeywell Prestige video.

  • Usually wiring diagrams scare me, but the the focus of a diagram being a type of road map will help while in lecture. You are a good technition Dr. Z

  • @MustangWW2 Thanks for watching.

  • Good straight forward teaching. Could have done it better!

  • did I hear a loose belt squeeling back there ?

  • @dh0452 You might have. I work on a lot of belt driven blowers.

  • Honestly the best video/ fastest information input I've ever experienced. You've got the knack.

  • @MeyerG4Indiana Thanks for watching.

  • hey DrZarkloff thanks so much for sharing your knowlegde its help a lot for all who those want to learn about HVAC!!! thanks i learn a lot!!!

  • You very helpful..

  • I have a WW geotherm heat pump on which the 240 volt L2 connector is completely burnt. The unit was NOT mounted on a vibration pad nor were the compressor mounting bolts lossened as per instructions. Can loose wires or possibly just vibration cause overheating??

  • @Sweeeeny Loose wires can definitely cause overheating. Loose bolts can cause the vibration to copper tubing to weaken then leak.

  • its very generous of you to take time to show everyone this stuff. I am not so sure most people are going to get what you are talking about but with a little training this is helpful

  • @redhot916spd Thanks for watching.

  • Could I just get a copy of your brain instead, j/k. Excellent video, Good Introduction to wiring diagrams. Sadly I only understood half of it, the real world part. 5 stars

  • @fidely Will it hurt? lol

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO IT HELP ME A LOT

  • your videos are really helpful im currently a student in NY learning the trade as well

  • @jorjito88 Thanks for watching.

  • haha not bad

  • i realy enjoy ur videos , iam currently a student at AAI ,learning the HVAC-R trade.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • What is the music that is playing at the beginning of your video, i went to check out the Champagne site and the music here was not on their play list.

    thank you

  • Champagne Millionaire is my nephew. He made that little tune just for me.

  • I am a student at a Career Center in Lakeland, Florida I take the Hvac course I have only about semester & a few weeks left before I graduate, I have been learning how to wire electric boards with switches, wires, relay terminals & lightbulbs as my loads, I am now working with 4 pole double throw Ice cube relays, when I complete my program do you think I could apply for an Hvac job with that knowledge or do you think I should look in to another electric class?

  • I wish you all the best. Even after you get a job, you need to continue to take HVAC classes. You can't know too much in this field.

  • @richyrich4566 I got about the same time left in HVAC in Utah left. I fell your pain . There is so much to learn in this feild. I get lost my self

  • @richyrich4566 Dude, I would recommend you to keep learning. Never stop learning. Hvac & Electricity... You would be the man!

  • Thanks Doc, This will be very helpful in My electric troubleshooting class. I got to take the class again, but i think ill get it this time.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • Hey you know the acronyms to the letters on the bottom of an ignition switch?

    the letters are :

    B

    M

    A

    G

    S1

    S2

its a john deere ignition switch and I cannot find anything online as to give me a clue how to connect it. Thanks:D

  • You might want to go to a John Deere dealer and ask them. I can't help you much there.

  • thanks

  • Dr., i was wondering if you could do a Video or possibly give me a walkthrough on Tieing in a thermostat to the condensing unit WITHOUT a wiring Diagram, my Instructor has somewhat left me behind and i have too install a Rudd heatpump by the end of simester. and i have NO CLUE on Thermostats

  • That sounds like some great practice. A residential heat pump condensing unit will usually have as many as five control wires connected to it.

    R 24 vac

    C common

    Y1 Compressor

    O/B reversing valve

    E emergency heat when defrosting.

  • I need to know how to hook an in-line fan to the blower motor so that it will engage when the blower motor does please.

    Thanks

  • 460V 60 Hz :p

  • how to wire motor

  • hello DR.Z my furnace run on heat and thermostat is satisfy but fan keeps running checked fan relay ok,checked circuitboard and its ok,can you help me out thanx. Its a carrier

  • You might want to check out how the thermostat is setup in the heat mode. The fan will cycle only if the fan is set at the auto position.

  • do you have your complete hvac troubleshooting learning video

  • The only videos that I have right now are all right here on youtube. I need to by a HD camera so I can make better videos.

  • thermostat is in auto and heat at 70, also checked limit switch and its ok,someone told me to check the motor maybe going bad

  • Nice editing.

  • Thanks.

  • you americans and your 460v..pfft 575v is where the action is

  • wiring diagrams are still really confusing, but good job identifying the components.

  • Thanks.

  • Good work Dr!Great presentation on the difference between paper and the real world!

    Sparky

  • Thanks for watching.

  • Where can I find the wiring diagram for my particular system?

  • The wiring diagram is usually located on the back side of the control panel. If it's been destroyed or lost, you could probably find it at the manufacturers web site. If all else fails then try calling the manufacturer.

  • Thanks Dr! great videos

  • wow very informative, even for an electrical engineer!! I am currently working on a giant project that requires the system to externally bypass the AC unit, and I've been watching you're videos to get familiar with the terminology. I think I might have blown the 24VAC Xformer, we are going to pry open the air condenser tomorrow to check, "rheem coreter 2 ??", anyways, I was wondering if you knew if the transformer is typically protected with a fuse. Thanks!!

  • Thanks for watching. Most 75 VA transformers have a built-in breaker. Although 40 VA transformers usually are not protected unless precautions were taken in the field.

  • there was a blown 3A fuse on a circuit board... replaced it and now works

  • Good going. I wish the board manufactures would replace those fuses with breakers.

  • Hey Doctor, Thanks for all your tips!

I highly recommend you to all my friends!

Directly from Coral Springs, Flordia. Trust me, we use AC!!!

  • Thanks for telling your friends. I'm in High Springs, Florida.

  • THANKS!!

  • when hooking up a 3 ton package unit, will you need to run 240 volt line for the heat strip and a 240 volt line for the air conditioner ,one for each? or just one line for both. I see the Heat strip has a place for a 240 v line to be run to it. Thanks

  • It all depends on the manufacturers requirements. Most residential systems will only require 240 volts to be run to the main disconnect then whipped into the package cabinet onto a single power block. I have seen many commercial applications of the same tonnage to require separate breakers and separate leads going to separate power blocks.

  • so, i want don't have to run a 240 wire to the heat strip. The one 240 v line runs the Heat pump ,the air condition and the heat strip .All i have to do is, just plug the heat strip into the plug in that's by the heat strip panel, rite? Thanks great info Dr.
