Jazz at the Philharmonic 1953

Dammit! I was there (at the age of 15)! Krupa & Lester were the BEST at that time among us teenagers in Helsinki. Soon us kids started wearing our version of porkpie hats, to the consternation of our parents, teachers and OTHERS in general.

Awesome video! The first concert I saw my older brother took me to see in 1955 Norman Granz Jazz at The Philharmonic at Symphony Hall Boston. They had programs full of photos that were like large magazines.The Modern Jazz Quartet played at the concert but were not on the records due to contractual problems. What a lineup with Gene Krupa closing the concert like in this video but a much longer solo with great lighting effects.

So that's what Barney Kessel looked like!One of my favourite guitarists and I'd never seem play. J.C.Heard is really cooking and Gene Krupa looks very happy. Pity it's only edited highlights, but what a miraculous piece of history. Why didn't Norman Granz film a whole concert - maybe he did?

Anybody out there that can take these films and sync them up with the audio? I LOVE this video but it's like watching a film originally spoken in Spanish and they put it in English. The movements of the actors mouths don't match what they are saying. Same thing here. That would be a great career for someone to sync up all these great old films.
