Hendrix was my number one guitar hero growing up. Over the last few years I've fell in love with Jeff Beck's music - especially at this later stage in his life. All I know is Hendrix was a musical force way before his time, and it's taken Beck quite a few years to reach a similar plateau of beauty in his music. I don't think you could say one is better than another, there's too much conjecture. But without a doubt they are two of the greatest musicians ever to pick up an electric guitar.
Uh, Excuse me but if you pick up Jeff Becks Truth Album, and give a listen to the old Greensleeves, and then Blues Deluxe, (W/Nicky Hopkins on Piano) And then Becks Bolero that Jimmy Page, or Clapton could NOT play at the time, you'd come to your senses and finally say, Yeah those Jeff Beck fans know what they're talkin' 'bout.
@MrBluesrules Dude I love Jeff Beck. He is number 2 for me. Nobody will ever trump Hendrix is what I'm saying. He became a legend with a 4 - 5 year career. Nobody will ever bring electric guitar to the masses like Hendrix did, or be as influential over so many different kinds of guitarists. You can take that as an insult if you want, but after all the music I've heard I'm convinced that Hendrix is THE best rock/blues/RnB guitarist of all time.
That's all fine with me. It's no insult. What I took exception to was that you said it took Jeff Beck years to develop. He got better as would be expected. BUT, Jimi had his rough edged unstylized begginings too. His 4-5 year career began much earlier with Chas Chandler from the Animals, and Phil Isley, and that's where he learned his style. Give a listen to "Who's that lady" You'll swear its Jimi. I like both guitars.
Jeff's only has such highly developed guitar skills because he can't sing with his own vocal chords. Lol jk. I love that he covered this song. I'm trying to decide whether I like his version or Ray's better.
He is one of the greatest. And I think technique-wise only Hendrix "beats" him.
And don't talk to me about shredders, they can't get that tone or sustain, they can only obtain speed. And that fine for some things, but I prefer this, as much as I love Joe Satriani or Megadeth and other metal.
even hendrix doesn't "beat" him, he might if he were alive, but Beck's been playing and improving for the last forty years.. he is, in my opinion, the best there was is and will be
@snakeweirdo Nonsense .I saw Hendrix 3 times .He was the best then . But Beck passed him awhile back, And yes, Hendrix probably would still be the best if he would have managed to stay alive.
@MrJamesDawson Excuse me, but, hendrix made things with his guitar that all guitarists want to achieve, but none really have in that way. Jeff Beck isn't like that: Look up Guthrie Govan in my opinion. Seems just as good as Beck.
Hell, I am even willing to put my bet on clapton as the better player. But that's all just a question of taste and preference.
@snakeweirdo jeff beck has made more of an innovation than hendrix has for the simple fact that he's survived, guthrie govan has nothing on beck, he's very technical and a great player but not nearly as innovative and soulful
@snakeweirdo of course you can, a musician develops over time, it makes perfect sense, i still say hendrix was the greatest because he changed everything but thats not to say something like beck has surpassed someone like hendrix in certain ways, but if you're going to say guthrie govan is as good you might as well say someone like malmsteen is. sometimes that shreddy nonsense completely misses the point
Jeff Beck is often referred to as the grandfather of heavy metal due to his audacious adventures in sound during the early part of his career, notably with the Yardbirds. Let's see, who else with the Yardbirds? Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page? Pretty good and significant company, heh?
Detroit. All my friends said Beck was untouchable. I'd never seen him play, but did covers of "Going Down". They were adament. He's the best. Unlike me, they weren't guitarists. It carries a lot of weight.
In technical terms of 'how good' a guitarist is; I find it fascinating how Jeff Beck can be simultaneously the most over rated and under rated guitarist in the whole world.
Every second of his playing exudes the nature of true art. He connects with something pure and real. One second he's the most brilliant technical master with a command of feedback rivalled only by Jimi Hendrix, then the next he might not grasp what he was reaching for. But it's all genuine, real, pure emotion and feeling.
I think you've nailed something important here: Beck is always attempting things nobody else would dare, so occasionally even his reach exceeds his grasp by just *that* much (holding my fingers a centimeter apart).
That said, this is a FLAWLESS performance that left me gasping.
