is there any real literature on this form of strength conditioning? any scientific articles or is it just something randomly made up because someone thought it looked cool.
@gymkid3150 No research that I know of, but steel bending goes way back whether it was bending nails, horse shoes, etc. It would be pretty hard to make an argument that you don't have to be strong to bend a thick nail, so there are some solid strength applications there. Take a swing at it, you might like it.
The wrap is going to provide more protection than gloves. You're looking at several layers vs. one. With gloves I would say you run a pretty big risk of punching a hole in your hand. It's also a pain tolerance issue.

About wraps: What's your opinion on gloves versus wraps? Why would you recommend wraps over gloves?
