First of all there were few Gatling guns being used in the Civil War. Hollywood movies have often given an inaccurate portrayal. The few gatling guns that were used in the Civil War were mostly used for defending forts and in other defense roles. There they showed their worth.

Nobody at the time would have been crazy enough to even consider a steam machine driven "machine gun" (a term not used until Maxim's fully automatic weapon was presented).

This story has MYTH written all over it.

Even the regular Gatling Gun was mostly scoffed at by Generals at the time and it wasn't even accepted by the Union Army until after the war in 1866. Fortunately some high ranking general in the Union Army purchased a few which a salesman had promised to demonstrate to him.

At that time of warfare there simply was no need for some fast firing artillery piece (which they were used as) firing rifle ammo. At this time heavy artillery was king and won battles.

place a big chamber filled with water at the end of barrel, and as we heat the barrel whater would convert into steam , compressing the steam, make a valve so on opening, the compressed air pushed the set of bullets out of the barrel!!

@nathanomgnathan If standard rounds were to be used then you would have to use detonation and a barrel. But from what I can see from the footage it simply looks like a spinning metal plate is responsible for "firing" the balls, resulting in them being highly sporadic.

It depends, in CQC you want to kill/incapacitate immediately, because a wounded soldier can still possibly shoot.

In some cultures and regions they might just leave the wounded to die and again those wounded might still be able to fight.

Its still just easier to kill, fuck just call fire support and kill everyone.

@soccerguy2433 excellent deduction. the tactical situation also influences which is more desirable. from a guerrilla standpoint it is 100 percent correct, but from a pitched battle campaign standpoint, the lines become blurred, as the advancing army must decide what to do and what resources to allocate to deal with enemy captured and wounded. the taliban are lucky to be fighting as humane an enemy as the coalition forces.
