While most rock bands either sing about screwing every woman in sight, or killing themselves on drugs, or how miserable and depressing the world is great big sea sing about simple things, that make you feel upbeat and put a smile on your face. Whenever i have a bad day, listening to miserable music makes me feel gloomy, so instead of turning on the radio i always put on great big sea.

GBS puts an amazing modern twist on newfie songs, but a lot of the shanties came from or were inspired from across the pond.

Although I've listened to Great Big Sea since a child, their music has shown up in places where I least expected it. I was on a cruise in Italy, around the Mediterranean in 2006, and on one of the top-deck bars on the ship, this song was blasting over the speakers. I got a little homesick, but I was amazed that I was hearing this song all the way in Central Europe.

Great Big Sea. Everyone from Vancouver to Rome listens to them.
