First you don't want to upgrade you want to do a clean installation of Windows XP. Why don't you try Windows Fundamentals for Legacy Pcs can run any program Windows XP Professional can it just doesn't have any games like minesweeper and solitaire. If you want it I will give you a link to the torrent.
So, you want/need to format the drive from "the inside"? Im not sure about that one if your partition is an active boot partition but if you have other operating systems, try those, see if you can get anything running. Then you might be able to use the process of elimination
To fix this you need to get a copy of linux like Ubuntu. Then run it as a Live CD and format it from there if you have any more problems pls feel free to ask
yeah well the only reason you are getting freezing is probably because of your processor speed or lack of RAM, but that wouldn't make sense since RAM would just be allocated to HDD.
just use gparted you will be able clear your hardrive easy

you formatting with the disk?
disk may be bad
you might lack sata drivers
boot failure.

it has two hard disks in it. Drive c is 4GB and Drive d is 2GB.
