I go to a syro-malabar church in America and I know that everyone in the Chicago Diocese uses the Sosappa until consecration. So it is still very much in use :)

In the Jacobite mass the preist waves the shoshappa over the chalice; it signifies the holy spirit. Syro Malabar doesn,t have this ritual.
