If he would of hit her head on she'd be dead. He took the left hand ditch totaled his truck and now the taxpayers want his butt for totaling the truck

Before we all pass judgement on the Engineer of this apparatus, maybe we should have the WHOLE story. Maybe - just maybe - he was approaching a vehicle that suddenly slammed on its brakes causing the Engineer to take evasive action. Afterall, sirens and red lights make drivers to dumb things.

It is a difficult balance to expedite but not lose control on bad surfaces.
Years ago I was driving a heart attack patient to a hospital. CPR in progress.
I drove slowly due to ice and snowhich caused VERY slippery conditions.
Patient later pronounced dead at hospital.
Had I driven faster, would he be alive?
But if I wreck, he is dead and unit is unavailable for other calls.

Well with on spots, you cant go faster. And if your going faster, you shouldn't be using them.
The ambulances, yes have on spots. But my Fire Dept doesn't use chains.
On Depts with newer trucks/more money they have chains..but we just go slow, and drive according to weather condition.
