Totally, Crenshaw should have been bigger than tons of goofy acts that 'made it'. He had a good run, but should have been much bigger. Always loved the reverb he used, too. Very cool.
Quite simply a supergroup. With Chris Donato on bass, Robert Crenshaw on drums, and John Crenshaw on orchestra bells on Cynical Girl- this tour was fire.
Thanks for posting! This is the song that made me a die-hard MC fan; for my hubby it was What do You Dream Of? Sooooo many great songs. What a talent! Can't wait to see him live again.
This song is an anthem of my youth. Back in 1981, I was living in a cold-water walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village, NYC. We played this song at full blast on our cheezy stereo every single day until we wore out the grooves of the vinyl album. Fast forward to present, I have moved uptown but Marshall Crenshaw still makes me crazy! xoxxo
This appearance is frozen in my memory - I have a crystal-clear recollection of seeing the original airing. I remember Paul and Dave bantering about what an amazing sound the band created with just three people. I think I had heard it on the radio before, but seeing this show spurred me to go buy the album immediately. I wasn't disappointed - a great debut. Thanks for posting.
Dave used to have the best musicians on his show. Some great artists made their network TV debut on Late Night/Late Show. For the last few years now he has had a lot of mediocre indie bands that we have never heard from again. Plus he has Regis on singing sometimes! Yuk.
Steamaddict - absolutely! As the camera came in from a distance, eerie! Like he was channeling Buddy's ghost! Crenshaw, man, one of those great original singer-songwriters continuing the tradition of fresh, unbelievably catch stuff. Feel bad I kinda lost track of his career. I'll have to catch up.
Love this song! Thanks for posting. The band is really cool - love the drummer's expressions! Marshall Crenshaw is such a talent, and continues to be today!

Give Marshall Crenshaw bleach blond hair and he would be Boomhauer from King of the Hill.

Marshall's brother Robert is playing drums. I saw them in '85 at a little club in San Luis Obispo, on their "Downtown" tour. Phenomenal show.

Awesome bass tone and playing.
MC looking very Lennon-esque here.
How cool it is when a 3 piece generates better ear candy than all those over bloated acts.

I liked him! He looks like & sounds like a cross between Holly and Lennon, if you know what I mean. I loved them both.

If I remember correctly Marshall told Dave this was the beginning of his "plummet to stardom." What a great line after a great performance.

Reminds me of Buddy Holly. I saw him as Holly in LaBamba but if you look at him in the begining of the preformance, it's strangly similar.
