I love making a Martinez with an Old Tom Gin, such as the Ransom Old Tom Gin that is made in Portland, Oregon. Ransom is made from an original recipe for Old Tom that David Wondrich, the respected cocktail historian, discovered in his research. And yes, always use the high quality sweet vermouth Carpano Antica Formula!
@CRISNCHIPS12398 there's several theories about where the name comes from. One is that it comes from the Martini and Henry rifle used by the British army in 1871 (because the drink and the rifle shared a strong kick).
Another is that in 1911, the head bartender at the Knickerbocker hotel in NY, a man named Martini di Arma di Taggia, created the modern drink (with Vermouth, Gin and orange bitters).
These are just a couple. There's many more theories as well.

This is pretty much a negroni with maraschino instead of campari, and less vermouth. Great ideas. Eben Freeman, if you ever read this, thank you!

@thiswasplanned Ever drink is just a variation on another drink. Nothing is originals as we think.

Why wouldn't the name of the Martini not come from the Martinez? They sound exactly the same pretty much...

That is Carpano Antica Formula, a very delicate sweet italian vermouth. It is also quadruple the price of brands like Martini & Rossi though.
