Natiaisena tämä kuului joskus seinällä olevasta puuradiosta äidin leipoessa leipää. Pirtissä tuoksui uusi leipä ja katajan vihdat joilla äiti puhdisti uunin. Niin lämmintä ja kodikasta. Pysyy muistissa aina, tuoksuja myöten.Leipoja vain poistui liian varhain. Todella muistoja herättävä kappale.
Estonian nightingale who had Polish mother and made career in Berlin, Germany, all over; quite a talent, no doubt about that. Poles, even Finns have made claims concerning her nationality. Korjus is quite a common last name in both Estonia ja Finland. Big star decades ago, but still remembered.
Korjus’ daughter Melissa F. Wells was born in Estonia in 1932 and for over forty years was a career member of the US foreign service. She served as US Ambassador to Estonia between 1998-2001.
Although Miliza did not perform publicly later in life, she did not lose her wonderful voice in that accident, and did ultimately recover full use of her legs. She gained weight - but she was a wonderful voice teacher and quite the bawd. Lovely person, good heart, quick wit, great musician.
I have not heard this wonderful song before. I saw the film Great Walz when I was about 10 years old & have loved the voice of Korjus since then and the song "One Day When We were Young". Interestingly, I only recently discovered Theo Mackeben through the songs sung by Zarah Leander and believe him to be a great composer. Thank you for enriching my life.
First time I heard this was in the funeral of son of my colleague and it really made me cry. I have decided that this shall be played also in my funeral.
When Miliza's father died in 1936 in Estonia, she was on her way to Hollywood and couldn't attend the funeral. However she was present with her voice - the same song was played over the gramophone. According to Herbert Korjus (her cousin) the military staff was moved to tears.
Militza is a treasure for the ages. Her career was cut short by an auto accident that hospitalized her with serious leg injuries, and while there Jeanette MacDonald took over roles she might have had. She made a movie in Mexico but never another in the U.S. altho she married a doctor in Los Angeles where she died at 73. Her daughter was appointed U.S. consul to Estonia by either Reagan or Bush.
OH what a beautiful voice she had and I wonder if she ever crossed paths with Jeanette MacDonald considering they were about the same age especially when she settled here in America in the mid thirties and starred in Hollywood movies
Warum, I cannot remember who the composer is of this song, sounds Hungarian to me but a beautil ful performance. She also appeared many times on radio during 1939. I have a cd which I compiled myself from this period with titles that she did not record commercially - Kreislers Liebefreud, Silesu's, A little love a little kiss just to name a few of them. Atruly great artist, her top notes always remind me of a glass bell, thanks for posting this item
I'd love to hear the CD you compiled and I believe there is a 78 of the first Queen of the Night aria and Ah Icht liebte from Seraglio sung br Korjus - have you ever heard them? I managed to get all the Venus recordings and the Great Waltz LP.
Miliza was "the toast of Berlin" after her debut (Gilda, I believe) in the early 30s at the STAATSOPER UNTER DEN LINDEN. James Spader (sp?) did a radio special on her some years ago. Miliza was a phenomenon - a great artist.
beautiful,magic and touching!

Warum gabst du uns die tiefen Blicke,
Unsre Zukunft ahndungsvoll zu schaun,
Unsrer Liebe, unserm Erdenglücke
Wähnend selig nimmer hinzutraun?
Warum gabst uns, Schicksal, die Gefühle,
Uns einander in das Herz zu sehn,
Um durch all die seltenen Gewühle
Unser wahr Verhältnis auszuspähn ?
