She had a phenomenal voice- hard to believe she walked away from music. Her love songs are so packed with emotion. The power behind her voice just adds more impact.
im 23 and there isnt any music today that can beat any of this older music. dont even know if anyone now a days can even play instruments like they used to lol
@cwingert2011 --Bless your heart, kid. Good for you. I grew up in the 80s and I really miss the music especially. Top 40 was so catchy and diverse back then. There was something for everyone. Now, its just hip hop crap and teenybopper nonsense. Poor kids today don't understand harmonies, playing w/real insturments (sorry Rockband doesn't count), or keeping things subtle and smut-free. I'm so happy to have grown up in the time that I did.
@cwingert2011 I'm 23 too and couldn't agree any more with you. I heard this song on a classic country station in the midwest late one night last September. I loved everything about this song. The electric piano lead was really sweet and had some strong feeling to it. It sounded like the one used on the first two years of the Cosby Show (which was after this song was made). Thanks markdc2005 for posting this video.
I used to have hair like this but mine was natural not a perm. I love this song and I think she does it better than Brenda Lee. I think Juice carries a tune longer than Brenda. This sure brings back some good memories and I wish I was young again and have had that hair again.

Wonderful job on the vocals. Love the stylization and vibrato. She has made this old classic HER song, not Brenda Lee"s. No wonder she won a Grammy for this.
I remember her singing "The Sweetest Thing" on an awards show so many years ago...I was watching it on TV and when she hit the close you actually hear every male in the audience take a deep breath when the shiver went up their spine...mine included, just an incredible experience...I have loved listening to gurl singers ever since...:-)
I saw her live in Biloxi, Ms. She was a fav before the concert. This is one of the few songs where the cover is better than the original. And I was a big fan of the original, too, in my 'younger' days.
A clearer copy of this video is out there if you do a search for "Juice Newton Break It To Me Gently lyrics", click on the "tunegenie" site. In the small screen it is decent, at least better clarity than this site.
Wow does this bring back some old GOOD memories. I used to have hair just like hers and wish I still had it. I think she sings this much better than Brenda Lee. She carries a note much longer and much more clearer. This is my favorite song from her. Sing on Juice.
Juice Newton (that voice!) doing this great song is one of the best musical treats to come out of the '80s. This and 'The Sweetest Thing' are her two songs that did well on pop AND country. Usually her hits were one or the other. Great stuff. Thank you for posting.
This song fits me perfectly, as I try to move on from this sorry Memphis to Orlando!!!! Memphis is the armpit of the south. Anyone thinking about moving here, please reconsider!!!!
OH MY GOD!!!!!! It's been YEARS since I Heard this!!! Juice is one of my all time fav singers from waaayyy back!!!! I remember my best friends girlfriend played this to him when he broke up with her! I love the song.....thanks for the memories!!!

Thanks so much for posting all of these Juice videos. She is awesome...and her voice gives me goosebumps. My husband has been a big fan since the early 80's and I became one as well after seeing her live in '02!

I, too, play this song once a day. It brings me back to when I was 6 and my mom had this album and sitting in front of the record playing listening to it.

Oh dear, gives me all these wonderful memories. God, she has the most wonderful soulful voice, and the music creeps gently into me. Thanks a lot for posting it.
This combination of music and presentation may be the most moving I have ever seen. I love the pace and changes in the music, and Juice in this video is the most alluring female form in music history
When a song like this comes along, once in a blue moon, it restores my faith in there still being wonderful songwriters who can tell it like it is. Juice has a fantastic voice and she makes this song such a sweet treat. I felt these words here when my first love and I broke up when I was 18. The first song I ever heard by her was "Angel in the Morning", which I love, but "Break It To Me Gently" is the winner. She's pretty, too. Thank you for this. - Paula
I must play this song once a day when I can. It's a beautiful song and lends itself to just a pleasant listening experience. There's been a number of singers who have crossed over to country when their failing careers, or just wanting to cover all genres, have needed a shot in the arm. Just to name a few - Jessica Simpson, Marie Osmond and the little actress named Crystal from the show "Wings". A few guys have done it also. It's sad that so many older stars can't be heard anymore.Thanks. -Paula
Music magic...Juice Newton could belt it out and rend you heart at the same time. Her singing of this wonderful lamentation draws us in and immerses us in a flood of emotion. A rare, mega-stage talent who could carry the show all by herself. Love Juice and this song! Thanks, Markdc20005, for bringig it to us. Juice also tears it up with 'Angel of the Mornng'. Merrilee Rush's original is still the standard, but Juice adds soul so deep to it that it becomes enchanted anew.
I only wish Juice was in the limelight these days - if she's done any concerts recently I haven't heard of any. It seems so many artists have gotten more exposure and popularity in Europe than here these days. I'm glad when they are appreciated and not made to disappear into the sunset. - Paula
Yep, Juice Newton won the Best Country Female Artist Grammy for "Break It to Me Gently" in 1983. In her career, she has been nominated for four other Grammys, two in Pop and two in Country.
Juice liked to be thought of as a Country singer. She said Country singers have longer careers than pop stars. On that she was right. It doesn't seem to hurt Country or Blues singers to get old.
Just fantastic....reaches right down to your heart & soul. She obviously put her "all" into this and if someone doesn't like it, they have obviously never experienced emotions at all. Thanks for posting!!
JUST MISSED!!! As stated above "Break It To Me Gently" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 17 weeks in the Top 100 in 1982!!!

- Paula

I think Juice won a Grammy for this one, didn't she?

Yep, Juice Newton won the Best Country Female Artist Grammy for "Break It to Me Gently" in 1983. In her career, she has been nominated for four other Grammys, two in Pop and two in Country.

It took guts to cover this Brenda Lee song. But Juice Newton was up to the challenge. Great recording.

Not true that country singers endure a longer career. Many talented singers from the early era can not get their music played!

Out of all the different singers that sang this song, I liked it best when it came out of Juice Newton.

Juice was born in New Jersey, but was raised in Virginia Beach, hence the southern influence. She is an amazing singer.
