  • I'll try to get one of these locos at a train show. Very Cool!

  • I remember watching this commercial on dad's old Magnavox t.v .

  • My Grandfather who sadly passed away built a huge HO gauge layout. This set was in his collection it was so hard to get this set to stay on the track.

  • My biggest problem was getting the "smoke" refils

  • Yep. I had one too. 1981 or 1982 I think. Used to beg to be taken to Kay-Bee toy store at the mall on Saturdays to pick up new accessories. I miss the good old days!

  • got this for christmas when i was a kid, remember the commercial!!!

  • i have the complete kit in it's original box

  • I have both the chattanooga and royal blue locos. I have several of each version and restored them to operating condition and have a few mint in boxes too,the royal blue being my favorite as i loved its paint job.

  • I have this kit somewhere. The engine was pretty but a real looser. The motor was in the tender, the steamer was just for show. It started stripping gears within days. Pretty but we were in the store buying a new loco before New Year.

  • Maybe TYCO should have used the Pacific steamer & passenger cars that made up the Royal Blue set for the Chattanooga Choo Choo? Anyone with a Royal Blue set have a comment?

  • I bought this engine for ten dollars at an antique mall. I had no clue it had any features!

  • 3 words -- ITS BEEN YEARS!

  • Thanks for posting! Brings back memories from the good ole' days!

  • I had a Tyco Chattanooga Choo Choo, I never had any problems with that loco, it stayed on the track and it did smoke well, My version was made in 1975 and was the 2-8-0 Locomotive, The later version 0-8-0 was one that derailed all the time and ran like crap, the 2-8-0 version I ran for many years without any problems.. I had a figure 8 bridge that came with my set, this one here has just the one side of track up high, I think this is the later version, I still run trains, but it is g scale now..

  • LOL front drive wheel off the track! I had a Tyco steamer once and it was junk. It wouldnt pull very many cars and it wouldnt stay on track. The diesels were ok, but the steamers were a joke!

  • The front driver wheel IS off the track - 0:24! Hilarious!

  • This was my first electric train set back in 1978. Most of the cars still exist today at my parents house but the original steam engine went years ago.Found the engine by itself at a trainshow in the 90s for $30.

  • i got a chattanooga train set, I'm still trying to figure out how to put all the pieces together!! lol

  • What a nice Steam Engine Ad!

  • Brings back the memories of the Tyco layout I had as a kid. I could never get it to smoke much or keep it on the rails!

  • I recently repaired one that had the shell half melted and got another that works from a vendor, along with some spare parts. Anyone have suggestions for converting to DCC?

  • DCC would be a snap since the motor is already isolated from the frame. Wiring the lights and smoke would be a little more tricky as you'd have to run them from the loco to the chip, wherever you would mount it...it has plenty of room in the cab or tender.

  • One would think that Tyco would have caught the friggin' drive wheel off the track in their own commerical! This was my first train set as a kid - and just like in the commercial, we could never get the steam engine to stay on the rails.

  • The Front Driver Wheel Is Off Track!

  • Man that makes me feel like a kid again, my dad got me (or him) a chattanooga train set in 1978, I was 2 months old, lol, I still have it and have collected all the other steam versions tyco put out over there years.

  • This video is depressing. I wanted this train for Christmas in 1975 and did not get it!

  • I have it it's sweet! But doesn't go that fast!

  • I have the locomotive caboose and boxcar i think it works like new!

  • wow this brings back memories. I still have mine is good shape and I still run it every now and then. They dont like the EZ track systems that are out now.

  • How well I remember this commercial -- I begged my father for one. I ran it until the gawdawful PowerTorque drive in the tender was completely stripped... in other words, not that long.

Notice that the front set of drivers are derailed in the closeup. Yup, it's a genuine Tyco!

  • I caught that too! I'm amazed the train stayed upright throughout the whole commercial. I fried the PowerTorque motor on my Chessie System Alco 636 in good time as well. Just makes me appreciate my Atlas and Kato locos I have now even more.

  • Mine stays up all the time. I have a silver streak alco which sant a problem from the power tourque. and it manages to outpul most of my newer locomotives on inclines that normally need a helper!

  • I remember the comercial very well. But George H at Trainland advised me never to by a train with PowerTorque even though they sold the sets there.

Good catch on the front Driver being off the track.

AS for PowerTorque I waited for the second coming of Mantua and Bought a 2-8-2 Mikado in 1978-79 I still have it and use it. I whish some one would post the Shifter Action from 1973 set comercial or the Spirit of 76 by Tyco.

  • I have that train, I love Hintage HO trans, Yes the powertorque tender is annoying but I bet that motor witll outlast and has most of my newer trains made after 1998!

  • This was at the time Tuxedo Junction charted a 1978 remake of "Chatanooga Choo-Choo" disco style! I even like the early 1970's Pay Day whistle sign in this commercial for the Chatanooga Choo-Choo Tyco train set!
