@oBLACKIECHANoo with games u are right, its no OS for gaming. But what do u mean with programms? Ubuntu now exists 7 years and u think there arent many progamms for it ?
u can have gimp on it, google earth, thunderbird, firefox, opera, miro internet tv, all the java stuff like jdownloader, hear and manage ur music, watch ur vids, ur dropbox file sharing, and programming in any language.
Its free and runs everywhere smooth!
for me as a student its perfect. (Search "Ubuntu Black Ice")
@ChuckTheGreatNorris There isn't support for it from most developers, it may have it's own things to do those things but usually 3rd party software is better.
I use W7 only for gaming, i use ubuntu for everything else. I cant afford a mac so i cant say whether its good or bad on the limited useage iv had on it.
@asdf36254 So the average Adam has got to run CCleaner once in a while, sure. I agree about that. But I have been running it since Beta without a problem, and little change in performance. Though Ubuntu 10.04 is much simpler to use then before, Windows is still simpler. I'm just arguing that Microsoft no longer makes "Bad products," I'm not saying it beats Linux. You'd be hard pressed to do that.
@jahid231 the safe and easy way to do it is just to download virtualbox or anyother virtual machine....and then install linux on to that. that way u can open it up from w/e host operating system u have. good thing about the vm's is that u can set it so u dont give it a specific amount of hard drive either. u could set it so that it expands by usage. so if ur full then u want to save more things it wil expand for u to fit it.
I do love ubuntu and it's eye candy that compiz brings but i find that many of it's functions are not practical. For example, I find that scaling and expo is more useful than beryl. Beryl seems to be just for aesthetic reasons.
I think thats going to be the long term problem with third party os's - device support - that what keeps me from even trying to set up something like this - no way to know whats gonna work and what wont. All video cards? Sound cards? Webcams? Printer drivers? While the interface is er um wavy and flashy - i dont see how this increases usability at all - win 7 is clean and fast (not like xp or vista) and my devices work. Is Ubuntu going to work? that question keeps me from even trying.
@StraightShooter01 same here, i like the idea of linux and bsd and the free opensourceness of it all, but what i don't like is that there are no really good applications for me to use. i can't just replace Final Cut Studio with something inadequate for my needs. I like win 7, but vista sucked. still to this day i use XP a lot.
all you have to do is use a program like wubi that will make a duel boot partition so you can try it for yourself and make your own first hand assumption
"Win 7 is clean and fast. . ." Ubuntu is extremely clean in terms of how much space it uses on the hard drive for the actual operating system. Comparisons on the same systems with Win 7 and Ubuntu show that Ubuntu starts, shuts down, and loads many programs faster. Whatever program you need can generally be substituted with a free open source program. Hardware like the iphone even work on Ubuntu. I would bet that soon Linux will be up to date on many of the missing drivers.
@kingmedabe This is true, but there is currently no good sequencer in Linux. At least not with the features I use every day in Cubase. As a professional composer I really don't have a choice but to use a Windows7 or a Mac machine.
@StraightShooter01 Well so far every piece of hardware has worked for me (sound cards, videos cards, printers, iphones, etc). When I first used linux, i found it a pain in the ass to get anything to work, and it took me a while to figure out that i need more than just video card drivers to get 3d applications to work. But once you figure the system out, its actually a very nice system. I have not used a windows system in a long time now. And wine seems to work just fine on all my windows games.
the effects, are pretty---(to say the very least), and they have also increased my productivity in College, I'm able to have Open office open, fire fox, and music jukebox..

Oh, and Fedora 8 has Compiz built in and with additional packages added via the rpm tool. It was really easy to get the fireball effect when windows closed and stuff.
Check my older linux posts diary to see my Compiz effects under Fedora 8.
Why do you want special window effects? What purpose do they serve?
I am not trolling - just highly curious of the previous posters stating that it is 'better than Windows'.
Now that XP support has been extended to 2011 - I am quite happy not to install Linux. And, if I had a choice, I would install Fedora - not Ubuntu - on my lappy.
I am also running a server with OpenBSD 4.5 (see my vids where I send mail from it) so it is not like I am against UNIX/Linux
There aren't many games for Linux. Of course they work best on Windows when they are made for Windows. So a game must be made for Linux to work best on Linux and using a Linux emulator would be laggy.
Wow, i dont know how that is possible tho, My Vista FPS is much higher than ubuntu, but then, who can blame then when the game must run througt Wine...
You can download free copy of it from original site and burn it on cd(it must be bootable cd) or just order free cd's from ubuntu site. Installing is very easy, you boot ubuntu up from live cd and on desktop there is an icon where you can start step by step install, everyone who can read should get it done.

I know, right? I use Ubuntu 8.10 (Interbred Ibex) and I would love to see this. Problem is, Linux is only 3.8% of computers, and most Linux users don't like to by software, they like it open-source.
@tsew75 Hard question. I like how simple Windows 7 works, and how well it works with the rest of the products I have from Microsoft. However, Linux can do far more, is still a bit lighter, and much more customizable. I have no complaints against either, but I would recommend having a copy of Windows on any PC, whether accompanied with Linux or not.
i'm watching this right now off a virtualbox pc with ubuntu 8.10. It's awesome, but it's a shame VirtualBox doesnt have GPU support.I wish I could see those neat effects by myself! Btw very good vid!
Beryl is just for Linux systems ,, that clip run Ubuntu with beryl if u have ubuntu system u can install it from command line type: Sudo apt-get install compiz-core desktop-effects , that's it
You probably get this all the time, but where did you download your mods? In particular I'm interested in the leafy one, sparkle window close and wobbly maximise :) I have Beryl(compiz) installed and Emerald theme manager. Helpy help! :D
I've tested Ubuntu on a computer with those stats. Ubuntu would work fine on that, but probably not with the graphical settings you see here ;) What's the problem with your machine?
oh thnx for replying, i already done and it worked 99% perfect, only problem was that my usb modem (i have wifi) doesnt work and i cnt find a driver for ububtu for it,,,so i cnt go on internet and i then installed XP which works as new...shame...

i do not like ubuntu, belongs to the priests, at the bottom they go against science but sometimes the help, but they are stoling public medicine in spain.
You might have already installed it by now but anything linux is infinitively better than xp. You sacrifice the ability to play heavy hitter games like COD 4 or crysis but thats about it.
Of coure Linux is beter than XP. XP is filled with viruses, spyware, malware and worms. Linux has viruses but they are easier to handle since its a single user root.
Yes, it's called a dual boot. When you go to install a new OS from a CD you have the option to partition the hard drive. If you make a new partition and install the OS there, each time you start your computer you can select either OS.
you can install Ubuntu INSIDE windows as a program, and it will allow you to dual-boot without partitioning, thats what I did I just need to figure out how to use it lol
"are you saying after installing beryl ubuntu desktop you lose benefits of running linux?"
No, I meant using Wubi to install Ubuntu onto Windows removes many benefits of running Linux as would running it in a virtual machine.
It was a reply to darkwoodmovies's comment:
"you can install Ubuntu INSIDE windows as a program, and it will allow you to dual-boot without partitioning, thats what I did I just need to figure out how to use it lol"
hi, i'm thinking of migrating to Ubuntu. tired of Windows Vista crap and i don't have that much money to spring on a MacBook. I like the Linux platform stability but I'd like to know if it will run iTunes since i need to sync my iPod from time to time to update songs. Is this possible? Cool vid by the way.
To answer kubruk's question: Ubuntu is a "Distro" or distribution of Linux based on Debian. I have two PCs right now; a Sony Vaio laptop with a dual core centrino running at aroung 4 Ghz, with two gbs of RAM running Windows Vista. I also have an older Toshiba Satellite with a 1.4 Ghz single processor, 512 Megs of RAM. At Idle, my Toshiba uses less processor power AND boots faster than the Sony!
google how to speed up vista. follow the steps, and ur computer will fly with vista. my acer laptop was the same way, (except i dont have a 4 ghz, i have 1.47 Ghz dual core, u bastard lolz) also, try using the no gui boot for vista. really helped my boot up time.
That's good... is there any liveCd for this?¿ or i need to install Ubuntu and THEN replace Gnome with Beryl?¿ Can you link me to a good site with tutorials about how to do it¿?
I have a spare PC i would love to boot with this, it's a P4, 512 Ram... do you think i can run this smoothly?¿
Looks good, but still not as good as windows 7, purely because of the fact that there isn't many games or programs that will run on the os...

Its quite simple in its ways.
Linux does not hold that much off the desktop marked compared to Windows. Linux does however own the server marked for the note.
And for some reason closed software from big companies also tend to be the ones holding back from transition to 64bit also.
But meh, if you made a program for Linux then ported it i guess it would be asyer to port to Windows then the other way around.
People in the top refuses ideas in its ways, and how many has Microsoft bribed anyway

tsew75 3 years ago 17
@tsew75 Not anymore. Windows 7 has really flipped things around.
pascbjumper2 1 year ago
@pascbjumper2 ok,Do you thing win7 is better than linux? I read good things too about it;
tsew75 1 year ago
@tsew75 Hard question. I like how simple Windows 7 works, and how well it works with the rest of the products I have from Microsoft. However, Linux can do far more, is still a bit lighter, and much more customizable. I have no complaints against either, but I would recommend having a copy of Windows on any PC, whether accompanied with Linux or not.

@pascbjumper2 thanks for answering;i will thinking about this.

i'm watching this right now off a virtualbox pc with ubuntu 8.10. It's awesome, but it's a shame VirtualBox doesnt have GPU support.I wish I could see those neat effects by myself! Btw very good vid!

That looks useful. Instead of launching the app I need, I can play with my desktop instead.

Looks awesome! If Linux was made for gaming, I'd use it... I have to stick to Windows, then. Looks just great!
Schmidt54 3 years ago
If you wanna try some Linux, try LTS (longtime support). E.g Ubuntu 8.04. I got it few monts ago -it's great. And i use Compiz 3D effects on it.
Linux is best!

I've tested Ubuntu on a computer with those stats. Ubuntu would work fine on that, but probably not with the graphical settings you see here ;) What's the problem with your machine?

it´s nice to see something different to windows, is this o.s better than xp? i´d like to install it.
yamaguto 3 years ago
You might have already installed it by now but anything linux is infinitively better than xp. You sacrifice the ability to play heavy hitter games like COD 4 or crysis but thats about it.
xbluedevil09x 3 years ago
no actually you can just add a program called wine.... research it. its pretty awesome
DonaldCream 3 years ago
Of coure Linux is beter than XP. XP is filled with viruses, spyware, malware and worms. Linux has viruses but they are easier to handle since its a single user root.

is there any way to have both, windows vista and ubuntu installed in one pc?
Hughgeek 3 years ago
Yes, it's called a dual boot. When you go to install a new OS from a CD you have the option to partition the hard drive. If you make a new partition and install the OS there, each time you start your computer you can select either OS.
mecell2002 3 years ago 3
ok, thanks!! :)
Hughgeek 3 years ago
If you wan't to run ubuntu on a windows based PC , try searching Wubi ... it's a Ubuntu installer for windows 8D.
you simply install it and restart the PC :)
robotwo 3 years ago
you can install Ubuntu INSIDE windows as a program, and it will allow you to dual-boot without partitioning, thats what I did I just need to figure out how to use it lol
darkwoodmovies 3 years ago 2
The only problem then is you remove some of the benefits of running Linux.
LordDestros 3 years ago
are you saying after installing beryl ubuntu desktop you lose benefits of running linux?
arcangel530 3 years ago

Oh and duh... my Toshiba (which I'm on right now) is running Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) with Compiz Fusion.
Dazzu74 3 years ago
To answer kubruk's question: Ubuntu is a "Distro" or distribution of Linux based on Debian. I have two PCs right now; a Sony Vaio laptop with a dual core centrino running at aroung 4 Ghz, with two gbs of RAM running Windows Vista. I also have an older Toshiba Satellite with a 1.4 Ghz single processor, 512 Megs of RAM. At Idle, my Toshiba uses less processor power AND boots faster than the Sony!
Dazzu74 3 years ago
google how to speed up vista. follow the steps, and ur computer will fly with vista. my acer laptop was the same way, (except i dont have a 4 ghz, i have 1.47 Ghz dual core, u bastard lolz) also, try using the no gui boot for vista. really helped my boot up time.

You can't replace GNOME with Beryl...
You can replace Metacity with Beryl.
