Check out if you have latest drivers for all (chipset, graphic) and get the latest Service Pack

(for Vista SP2). Maybe it's because of dual-core CPU but i can run it very well on 2.1GHz Core i3 330MB Dual-Core on minimum.

@esenjay22 i3's have 2 threads per core, so it is essentially a quad core CPU (but not quite as powerful) so it could easily be a dual core problem. However I run Mafia II maxed out, 1280x1024, no PhysX @ around 30-50fps and that's just as CPU resource using as GTA4 and has better graphics.

@QQponda it is banned in Australia, same as Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead uncensored and also Dead Rising but that doesn't stop people getting hold of them. Australian customs have no problem with letting a foreign copy of the game into the country. Also, before you say, "ban it everywhere then - or stop it being made..." that will only put the economy in an even worst state that it is already as video games make up a fairly large percentage of the entertainment media industry.

WTF??!! you have 4 GB RAM a beautiful quad processor and you put a 9800GT with 512mb??!! Trust me, if you put a ati 4870 1gb just a bit more expensive than that, you can put all highest settings. because that video card doesn`t seems well with your quad processor and the 4gb RAM

I'm sure it will run smoothier, but take a better one GPU. Like 4890 or GTX275. If you don't have so much money for spending, take atleast GTX260 (216sp), they're so cheap now

what do you mean normal vista? You mean windows vista 32bit? and yes it will, it will even run the game in Direct x 10 (better graphics) but your game may lag depending on your CPU, Ram, and graphics card

i have a 4870X2 2gb card and it runs smoothly it is much more value for money than the nvidea 295gtx which costs like double and is only 5% better, you could also have a standard 4870, also you might have to upgrade to a AMD phenom X3 or X4 or else ur Graphics card might be to powerfull for your CPU. Your urrent CPU should be fine for other games but maybee not for GTA IV.

You cannot set anti-alias in this game, you can try force it into via graphic driver control panel (nVidia CP, ATi Catalyst...) or play with the maximum availabile resolution.

A pc with a gtx 280 and a quad core processor will make a ps3 look like cheap crap.Infact most the latest graphics cards are better anyway, Better shaders and rendering, pluss the option to ad AA or AO supersampling, minimaps ect... Im not so sure, i think... 20FPS on lowest (friend with similar PC tells me how is it running). Your CPU is old, 2x2,8 AMD is not good for this, i know about people which have E8400 on 3GHz (its got 5x higher L2 cache) and they are running on medium with 30FPS cca. Your video card have good memory but i dont know much about that GPU (freq. etc.). If you would like to run it pretty smothly on better settings do some radical upgrades ;-)

Well, to put it in a nutshell, frames are prerendered by the cpu and then treated by the gpu, which explains why GTA works better on a Quad Core. However, it does not explain why the game works worse than on a 360 at the lowest settings...I expected GTA IV to work at least as on my 360 in terms of performance and graphics...
