This game very well could have been for a split of the title. Georgia Tech won the rest of their games and got a share of the title. Had UVA won, I think they might have done the same.
@joboots007 Yep. Derek wore #83. He injured his hamstring before the Sugar Bowl, otherwise he'd have played in his final college game against Tennessee!
It's been long enough that I remember clearly watching this game on TV, but I have no clue which team I was rooting for.
Virginia's dream season of 1990 totally fell apart after this game. 2 weeks later, they would lose at home to a mediocre Maryland team, and to make matters worse Shawn Moore went out with an injury late in the game. Without Moore, they totally got destroyed by VA. Tech in the season finale. Surprisingly they still got their Sugar Bowl bid, but would choke away a 16-0 halftime lead to Tennesse and wind up losing by 1 point.
Both coaches, Bobby Ross and George Welsh, were great coaches. Take nothing away from Ross and Tech, but it looked like Welsh took his foot off the gas a bit in the Second Half.
This was a pretty good game, I remember watching this at a party in Golden Gate Park . I can't believe it is almost 20 years since this game happened.
Other than winning in Viriginia today, this was the last time Georgia Tech won in Virginia. 0-8 at Viriginia ever since that last win in 1990 other than today.
I was there. Nothing like watching the Moore-Moore show and Jones/Bell. It was such excitement there and the advantage I saw was the turf helped GT's speed more than UVA. Go JACKETS!
What a game! UVA, who had the #1 offense in America, had a 28-14 lead at Halftime. And CBS Sports Announcer Mike Francesca said he thought UVA would "blow it open in the Second Half." Boy, was he in for a surprise? Personally, I think that Bobby Ross' coaching job throughout that season remains one of the best ever.
By the way, I think this was the REAL National Title Game right here. Had UVA won, I think they would have kept their momentum going and won it all.
UVA's weakness the whole season was defense. But, no one really notice that because UVA was blowing teams out by scoring so many points and hadn't played a super tough schedule. But I got a glimpse of it earlier in the season when they played William & Mary at home. William & Mary was a very solid I-AA team, but they were smaller and less athletic than UVA. Nevertheless, they scored over 20 points on UVA in the first half and 35 points all-together.
I heard that, when the final buzzer sounded and UVA fans walked out, it was absolutely silent. Was Coach O'Leary a coach on this team? If so, what was his title? I know that current Maryland HC Ralph Friedgen was the OC.
By the way, with Paul Johnson at the helm, GT will have moments like this once again.
Yes, O'Leary was there. He was the defensive coordinator, and he remained defensive coordinator under Bill Lewis, until being named head coach in 1994.
Was Bill Lewis just one of those coaches who wasn't meant to be a head coach at any level higher than the PURE mid-major level. I know he did a good job at ECU.
And you certainly have another powerhouse brewing under Paul Johnson. Personally, I think that he will stay at Tech a long time and lead them to great results.
THIS IS WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR 2011 BITCH GO JACKETS THWG
