The reason why its quiet is because the stadium the Wolverines play at is built like a bowl and like other American football stadiums they are built upward, so the sound at Michigan stadium goes up and not around.

as much as i love Europe (it really is the coolest place on earth), the sports scene there just isn't the same as it is in America. I was in Europe during the last world cup, and its true that the bars fill up.

Any acoustician will tell you that Michigan Stadium is designed in such a way that there's very little sound that actually is projected into the bowl -- there is no upper deck, and thus there are no exposed surfaces that reflect the sound back to the field. Most of it is absorbed by all of the bodies in the stands.
