Everything in the video was incredible, I was impressed.

Apart from your acting/shooting/level of movement as playing Gordon. Other than that, the sounds were good, and the enemies and other NPCs preformed well.

Yeah I can see why viewers would be confused by this, and it always bothers me when I'm making these videos - it's not really about 'gameplay', it's a film/machinima, really, so I'm playing/acting as if it were real life, or Game Over' when you died (plus I wanted some scenes where you watch helplessly while your friends die.). And I should have made it clearer that the Advisor's mind-blast had affected/traumatised Freeman.

How do you access the hl2 gcf files to make the sounds. It says it cant find the softeare to play it.

@drgyjilp1 Hi, I use a free (and, I trust, legal) piece of software called GCFScape to extract the wav files - music, sound fx, speech - from the game, which I'll then sometimes edit and manipulate to make new sounds or dialogue for the videos. It also works with any Source game installed on your hard drive. I don't have a link, but I'm sure if you Google it you'll find where you can download it, plus all the info you need to get it working.

Hi, I used BlackhawkGT's Advisor adv dupe - I just smacked it with a crowbar or shot it to trigger different animations from Episode Two, which I then edited together for the video.

It's supposed to be a siege (being so close to the Citadel walls, I just thought it would make sense that the Combine would want to throw everything they can at you) so I was trying to create a sense of being pinned down in one spot, and not just standing there!

And I try to keep the jumpcuts to a minimum, but editing these things is always a bit of a 'mare, plus I have to chop bits out sometimes where I can, due to YouTube's restriction on the length of the video you can upload.

Sometimes I use console commands to tell them to run to certain areas of the map, or attack specific targets, but a lot of the time the AI behaves really well anyway - just spawn an NPC, spawn an enemy, and they'll start fighting and even run for cover - although if you watch my 'Stupid Medic' video, you'll see things don't always go to plan.

Blimey yes I use NPC Control all the time! It's a Godsend, especially for the latest videos (I've tried a few versions, but I find SuperBenjeh's works best for me.) It's just that sometimes when I use it to ask an NPC to move to a certain area, the NPC will just ignore the command and stand there looking gormless. So if I want one to simply run down the stairs, say, I'll usually open the console and type npc_select and npc_go (more out of habit than anything, really).

...But if my previous reply was misleading, and implied that I just used console commands, and nothing else, without giving credit to the makers of these addons, then sorry about that - and crikey no! Although for this video I didn't really need NPC Control, as a lot of the time I could just spawn the rebels and Hunters and let them get on with it (but I did use the Model Manipulator quite a bit for this one).

Hi, yes, I did record the Advisor scene without the shotgun (using the Impulse 200 cheat to remove the weapon model) but I just felt it didn't look right and, well, a little silly, so I decided to use a video effect to blur and 'smear' the picture instead, to (hopefully) give the viewer the impression that Freeman had been mind-blasted and was under the Advisor's hypnotising influence. But watching that scene again now, I don't know, I think maybe it would have made more sense to remove it.

if you want to record so long you want to you need to buy fraps the demo can only record 30 secs before it stops and you are useing demo hope this information was usefull :)

this has got to be the most intense battle in the series! even though Gordon was mostly just sitting there like a lump. But i can say that i have never seen anybody brave or stupid enough to try and kill a hunter with a crowbar, and succeed! 5/5

u shouldnt be pretendin to be gordan freeman, letting everyone else die while u watch everythin, fair enough u need to look at the action, but sittin staring at a hunter with a loaded shotgun in his hands isnt somethin freeman would do, very good though, the adviser shit was cool

Yes, I've received a few comments about my standing and looking around! Sometimes I just want to show NPC behaviour (like the Hunters being particularly cunning); other times I'm just trying to convey a feeling of combat shock or trauma ('What the hell do I do now?') or, less seriously, as if I'm playing HL2 with something like the PC version of the first Far Cry's checkpoint system (if you've played it you'll know what I mean!), where death in-game means losing an hour or more of progress....

But I'm also trying to give my version of Freeman a kind of character arc - in the earlier videos he's a bit of a hooligan and borderline psychopath. Then, after everything goes wrong in Nova Prospekt, and with the G-man constantly watching and taunting, the idea was to make him increasingly paranoid, hesitant...but, you know, I don't sit down and seriously plan or analyse these things - think: That's how I'm going to play it. I just go with a gut feeling - that that's how I should approach it.

It's still a 'work in progress' at the moment! It's going OK, although it's taking about 3 hours to set up and record about 5 seconds at the moment, thanks to NPCs misbehaving (stupid bloody rebels!) and my saved games crashing (something about 'edicts' and 'save/restore overflow'- I think there's too much happening and too many props for one scene, so I've had to scale things down a little). But it will be soon hopefully - and it's going to be about 20 minutes long, I think.
