Wish they didn't stop it when it was getting good in Fox Kids (stopped when the dragon form appeared). This is the only Mecha show where you can tell how the system works and how it could move fluently like that. In Code Geass and Gundam you can't tell how they move like that with two joysticks.

@deckire- Ah the Fox Kids version was a hack-up. They cut scenes (including the very first episode which they tried to insert as flashbacks) and put scenes in different order as well as edited out much of the swearing and blood from the fights. The complete series actually has been fully translated. If you want to experience the full series in its true glory, I recommend getting or borrowing the DVDs which have both English dubbing and subtitles with Japanese audio if desired. :)

It's because there's often a huge load of money involved. A lot of japanese voice actor is complete shit when you open your eyes ( or ears?) and get critical about it. An animé like Escaflowne had a big budget and was an ambitious project, so ofcourse they get good voice actors.

English voice actors have been getting mucb better lately, just have a look at Chromartie Highschool, an animé I actually watched FIRST with english dub THEN listened to the japanese one. English was better.

err... I watched this with my friend several years ago, and i thought it was awesome. Today I watched it again, and it freaked me how crappy it was. Don't get me wrong, i don't hate escaflowne, but the animation was laggy as hell (the previous time we watched it sped up) and the plot was clogged with clichés. We thought that the reason for the lagging was that my friend's copy might have been a pirate, but seems like it wasn't...

Escaflowne had some really topnotch animation for a *television anime* in 1996. It was hand drawn, painted on cels, with REAL paint. Many of us are used to animation as it is now, where almost everything is done digitally. This anime is almost 13 years old. You have to cut it a little slack. :/

I would have to disagree in terms of production value during the time. I don't know what "laggy" means. The lipsynching? Hardly noticed.

I think the story plot was solid and the villains not overtly labelled "bad guys", as with the case of his Van's brother, there was depth in the characters-I mean, it was loaded with subplots: affairs, betrayls, alliances, revelations, all coming full circle in the end. I stil admire the voice acting, animation especially the fight with Van and Allen.

When comparing today's standards with the mid 90s Escaflowne, in my opinion, was VERY well made especially if they were hand-drawn on cels. Apart from improvements in color, clarity, texture image, the change is negligible style-wise. Look at shows like Code Geass (which recently ended) and One Piece. If digitally remastered, Escaflowne would look amazing. The animation is not choppy when accounting other factors.

As for the story, it's still great to watch again if you have the time. Cliches were not really noticeable even with mutlple viewings. It has good character interaction, subplots, music, and voice acting. Excitement can subside after a while, so the most important thing is how you felt the first time you watched the show.
