Great, great game. This is a a tough thing to say for a life long Raider fan to say but, I think the 9ers woulda beat the Bills just as Giants did. That having been said it's all academic really, the Bills never faced the 49ers so, we'll never know. Excellent post.
The Bills for 4 years stomped through the weeds of a pathetic AFC which made them seem better than they were. They were destroyed by teams like the 1991 Redskins and 1992 Cowboys with great offensives. The great 1990 Niners offense, basically the same team as the Super Bowl winning 1989 version, would have out scored them as well. And the Niner D front 7 was superior against the run to the Bills. Ever notice here that the Giants don't get to maintain epic long time time of possession like SB 25?
The only reason the Bills made it to those 4 straight super bowls was the mediocrity of the AFC.
The 49ers had enough defense to keep them in the low 20s and enough offense to score more than 30 points.
Steve Young would have started that game since Montana got knocked the fuck out. THe only thing Young did was win a couple of MVPs and a super bowl after that so the '49ers were in good hands.
Yeah. John Elway and Dan Marino sucked, right? NOPE. Such a WEAK argument when everyone says how the AFC was not strong enough -- well, you know what? Let's suppose your argument was correct (that the AFC was too weak) that STILL means the Bills were the BEST team back then in the AFC. They beat the 49ers - no question... Seifert is no Parcells.
ESPN NFL Countdown had a flashback on this game today with Bill Parcells providing his memories.
I think what was most memorable about this game was when after Bahr hit the game-winning field goal, Pat Summerall said "There will be no three-peat."
It was Roger Craig who after Super Bowl XXIV began the "three-peat" chant. And it was his fumble in this game that essentially destroyed the opportunity. One of the greatest exercises in hubris that I witnessed.
Roger making a reference on the sidelines of their Super Bowl victory over Denver about a possible "three-peat" is a sign of hubris? From what I remember about that statement he was not being a dick about it. He was not making a guarantee either. Hubris?
But the other game to be played Sunday, Ravens-Patriots, has interesting parallels with the 1990 NFC title game. Ray Lewis and Tom Brady are viewed as the best players on their side of the ball in this century while L.T. and Montana were seen just the same in the '80s.
Also, Bill Belichick was a Giants assistant at this 1990 playoff game, a game broadcasted by CBS. On Sunday, you'll find Belichick and CBS (and yes, Phil Simms) in the Ravens-Patriots battle.
I think about this game and rivalry quite often. This is the first time I recall security being an issue for an NFL game (Persian Gulf War). As a Bears fan with a nostalgic mindset, I've always disliked those old adversaries like the Giants, 49ers, and Redskins, and I have to admit that I still see them as teams to keep up with as much as the Packers, Saints, Steelers, etc.
There was a great deal of buzz and anticipation about a Saints-Packers NFC title game this season. 21 years ago, there was similar anticipation over a certain matchup for the conference finale which did turn out to happen unlike this year where instead of Saints vs. Packers we will see, yes, Giants vs. 49ers.
Thanks dave for the video i have been looking to see this game for ever my friends said they had it on tape but could never find it. Thank you sir wish u were returning kicks this weekend for big blue
big blue fan since 1973 yes yankee stadium ... well i thank my uncle for makin me a giant fan

Man ima die hard Niner fan and as a kid i didnt go to school for 2 days after this game.lol great old rivalry of the 80s. Still hard to watch. Thanx for uploading
This was essentially Joe Montana's last game as the 49ers' starting quarterback. He missed the entire 91' season with an elbow injury and when he came back for the 92' season the job already belonged to Steve Young.
In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:29, It Was CBS Sports' NFL On CBS: NFC Conference Championship: New York Giants Vs. San Francisco 49ers Video Open From Late Sunday Afternoon, January 20, 1991.
i dont care who played qb for niners the would have beat bills their defense was better and they would score easy on buffalo not taking anything away from bills buffalo was overated in my opinion giants played clock ball against bills niners could do same thing all day
Does anyone else LOVE the fact that there's no first down line on the field, no score/time box taking up a corner of the screen, no constant graphics popping up, no stats scrolling at the bottom of the screen, no scores of other games constantly flashing...
Unlike today where people's attention spans are a joke and everyone needs to be updated constantly and repeatedly.
joe montana would have been out for the super bowl, and though steve young was capable, he still had yet to emerge as the player we all know him as so it's hard to say if they would have three-peated or not

The Buffalo Bills would have won Superbowl 25 if the 49ers won this game.
The Giants were had an amazing gameplan to beat the Bills (game clock, tire the defense, and keep Kelly off the field).
San Fran would have lost - Buffalo was too damn good that year.

No retard. Their teams simply didn't match up to the dominant NFC teams of the era: 49ers, Redskins, Giants, Bears & Cowboys.
"They beat the 49ers - no question"
Your ignorance is sad. Watch more football.
