It is a shame that racism persists. So many individuals can't seem to quite realize that their "race" is irrelevant. Too many "blacks" qualify their identity as "black" ("I'm not just a man or woman, but a BLACK man or woman"). Too many "blacks" expect racist behavior on the part of "whites"... merely due to thier skin color! What pure racist thinking this is. Isn't this just plain ridiculous? But since you mentioned it, as a "white" man I suppose I'll have to say that I, and the members of my family, do not seem to identify with a culture (at least no culture that is associated with "race"). I tend to indentify more with moral principles. I consider "race" to be utterly irrelevant in any context except perhaps anthropology.
I beleive that culture is where mores are taught. Culture can be racial, national, gender, behavioral. One of the issues I have heard many of the yount I have worked with that happen to be in White supremest groups is their joining those groups out of a need to feel connected to a culture. Tradition. Some people need it, some don't. It sounds like you have found a cultural connection that doesn't envolve race.

After all, the first often leads to the second, and there can be no racist acts that are not sanctioned by racist thoughts. It is the very concept of racism that must be attacked for its absurdity... and in my opinion that includes the widespread practice of "identifying" with ones "race". While ones character may be an extension, to some degree, of one's culture... "race" should not be confused with culture.
DEfinately,race & culture are two very different things. I beleive we are all entitled to our thoughts. We have all received miss info about each other. It's only, IMO, through recognising those thoughts that we can then counter them. Perhaps racism is carried forward in the dominant culture. Parents hand it down, so to speak. With so many children taught to be distrustful of individuals of a specific "race", then racism will persist. For example, as long as many "black" children are taught that the cards are stacked against them, that it's a "white man's world", then many young "blacks" will make only a limited effort. After all, if they're convinced that it's a losing proposition, then why bother?
I believe racism is a learned behavior, like sexism, anti-semitism, classim. Black children do not have to be "taught" racism, we live it every day. That is difference between experienceing it and "hearing" about it.
Of course racism is learned. Dr. King must have understood this when he emphasized that character cannot be determined by "race". But let me be blunt in stating my personal belief that much of the racism experienced by "blacks" is often not their observation of racist acts directed at them by "non-blacks", but rather that often it is merely a perceived racism on the part of "blacks". As a man of integrity I can say with the utmost sincerity that I have not come to this conclusion lightly...

Another story that I would like to share involves my brother who unfortunately decided to take a different path in walking home from school one day. While attempting to take a short cut through an apartment complex he was not familiar with, he came across a large group of young black teenagers approximately his same age (mid teens). Without hesitation he was physically attacked with racial slurs called all the while ("cracker", "whitey", etc.). This is absolutely a true story...
... But should my brother, based on this experience and others, decide to "be weary" of all "black" individuals? Personally, while I can understand how one like my brother might be inclined to fear "blacks" based on such experiences, I do not believe that such a fear is to be justified in general.
Your Brother has had an experience, AN experience that in his mind confirms the racist missinformation he has heard all his life. We live the experience over and over again and eventually come to the conclusion, (after simular experiences with whites and only whites) that the experience is racially based. Not only do we see it personally, but we see it happening to other people of color.
This happens to us in childhood. The majority of White children do not experience racism.
(I only mentioned one of many such experiences with racism experienced by both my brother and myself) I've come to suspect that young "blacks" are taught from an early age to expect racism from "whites". If this is true, then rebellion against a society that is perceived to be unjust should be expected. This could help to explain in part the high incarceration rate among "blacks". I don't expect this to be the primary cause, but I can't help but to suspect that it plays a part...

I was disgusted by the Huckabee comment as well as Hillary's recent comment. I literally could't believe my ears... one from a so-called minister and another from a so-called liberal. Not only am I disgusted, but I am disappointed. I thought we had made more progress in this country than that. As my friends, I love to joke and clown around as well as the next, but I didn't find either comment remotely funny.

Makezmuzic - Each race does come up with the race card. Japanese Americans could have, but they didn't after WWII. My Grandfather Fought for America in the 442nd Japanese American Battalion. He lost his business and everything while family were imprisoned in camps when he was sent to battle. Hold it against America? No. Do any Japanese? No. It's important to remember our roots, but don't try and blame someone for the past. Read more about the 442nd and manzanar, it's almost forgotten history.
I've seen a couple of PBS doc on the Japanese American Battalion & its importance in WWII. I'll read some more. I think it is important to remember ones roots & the past. The difficult thing is when the past is still the present.
As I wrote on the other vid, people of color do not play the race card. When an event happens solely based on ones race, IMO, is when the card is played. When race is the defining issue that drives a persons actions.

Oh, that's not quite what I'm saying. I'm only emphasizing what Dr. King said, that one's character cannot be determined by "race". But since you mentioned it, as a "white" man I suppose I'll have to say that I, and the members of my family, do not seem to identify with a culture (at least no culture that is associated with "race"). I tend to indentify more with moral principles. I consider "race" to be utterly irrelevant in any context except perhaps anthropology.

One of the issues I have heard many of the yount I have worked with that happen to be in White supremest groups is their joining those groups out of a need to feel connected to a culture. Tradition. Perhaps racism is carried forward in the dominant culture. Parents hand it down, so to speak. With so many children taught to be distrustful of individuals of a specific "race", then racism will persist. For example, as long as many "black" children are taught that the cards are stacked against them, that it's a "white man's world", then many young "blacks" will make only a limited effort. After all, if they're convinced that it's a losing proposition, then why bother?

Another story that I would like to share involves my brother who unfortunately decided to take a different path in walking home from school one day. While attempting to take a short cut through an apartment complex he was not familiar with, he came across a large group of young black teenagers approximately his same age (mid teens). Without hesitation he was physically attacked with racial slurs called all the while ("cracker", "whitey", etc.). This is absolutely a true story...

Your Brother has had an experience, AN experience that in his mind confirms the racist missinformation he has heard all his life. We live the experience over and over again and eventually come to the conclusion, (after simular experiences with whites and only whites) that the experience is racially based. Not only do we see it personally, but we see it happening to other people of color.
This happens to us in childhood. The majority of White children do not experience racism.

I was disgusted by the Huckabee comment as well as Hillary's recent comment. I literally could't believe my ears... one from a so-called minister and another from a so-called liberal. Not only am I disgusted, but I am disappointed. I thought we had made more progress in this country than that. As my friends, I love to joke and clown around as well as the next, but I didn't find either comment remotely funny.

Makezmuzic - Each race does come up with the race card. Japanese Americans could have, but they didn't after WWII. My Grandfather Fought for America in the 442nd Japanese American Battalion. He lost his business and everything while family were imprisoned in camps when he was sent to battle. Hold it against America? No. Do any Japanese? No. It's important to remember our roots, but don't try and blame someone for the past. Read more about the 442nd and manzanar, it's almost forgotten history.

I've seen a couple of PBS doc on the Japanese American Battalion & its importance in WWII. I'll read some more. I think it is important to remember ones roots & the past. The difficult thing is when the past is still the present.
As I wrote on the other vid, people of color do not play the race card. When an event happens solely based on ones race, IMO, is when the card is played. When race is the defining issue that drives a persons actions.

I'm writing an album about my grandfathers journey, even though hes Japanese, in blues context, as he then moved to texas after. It will blend Stephen Stills and influences like old Clapton and SRV.

Correct. This is not a JOKE. This was an attempt by the Huckabee organization to introduce fear about you-know-what. And then Clinton does it a few days later. There is no coincidence about this, my friend.

My dear, making a joke about assassination by an ordained minister is of course not funny. But there is more. It is ominous. Ominous of the end of our Country when presidential candidates start talking about the attempted assassination of another candidate, regardless of ethnicity. Right?
Buy the US Constitution. Read it every week. Keep it with you to show others. Read to others important parts of the Bill of Rights and important amendments.

It is a VERY SCARY state of affair. I was just as blown away when Jerry Farwell called for the assasination of Chevas. I would be equally angry if Rev. Wright had called for the assasination of Clinton.
I do hold religious leaders to a higher standard. They have a lot of influence in this country.

It's interesting Tubo, that you bring up the constitution and bill of rights. This past 4th of july I went to a celebration where all the guests received copies.
The hostess did a little quiz on the us identifying the amendments in the correct order. It was very interesting. I think your absolutely correct. We do need to educate ourselves on both of those.

After a second listen I agree with geroldfirl that Huckabee's comments did sound scripted. After his Obama comment he went on to say"the future of our culture and civilization depends on people who understand that a democracy cannot operate in a moral vacuum" I assume his moral values do not include a prohibition to murder.

Let's put it in perspective. It is interesting how some, not all, White Americans can excuse such a statement given the country's history of murdering its leaders, both black and white, that have fostered change that brings us closer together. I strongly recommend that those who struggle with racism get Dr. Creflo Dollar, Jr., series about growing in the love of God and Racial Reconcilation. It will give you understanding, if you are a Christian, and help you out of your struggle.

A powerful Black man is always in danger in America, and Huckabee knows that. So, yes, there are racial overtones in his idiotic remarks. He didn't construct the joke; he spoke off the top of his head, and what resides there is not good. As for a sense of humor, do as makezmuzik said: Make the parallel with a Laci Peterson joke and you see that there is no humor in H's joke. So, no, we shouldn't "take a joke" in this case. Not because we are humorless people, but because we are decent people.

This was a premeditated threat on the life of Barack Obama, and a very ugly, very stupid, and ultimately very self-defeating tactic in an election that will bury the Republican party under its own lies and blunders.

I also must admit that after 12 years as a quartz worker for the micro-electronic industry, building systems for government/military contracts I'm slowly sufficating due to on the job exposure exposure to asbestos and I have to fight for the supplemental oxygen I need to slow down the process of my death. That as a disabled worker, medical/cade won't pay for pulmonary rehab that will lengthen my life.
Did I mention I'm the greatgreatgranddaughter of a Civil War veteran also?
