whenever i see charlie at a demo or march i make sure i stay as far away from him as possible, he's an embarrassment to any movement for productive change, he tries to make himself into a poster boy, his youtube videos are vain and full of boastful self appraisal. i wish he'd quietly disappear, he's not important

The police will only take action and have a case if they receive a complaint. For Section 5 of the public order act this chap would have to be causing harassment, alarm or distress or be likely to cause it to an average member of the public wether present or not. Although the police do not need a complaint to act they generally won't act until they receive one in the interest of freedom of speech, and the police will be further criticised if they fail to act on a complaint.

How about this for a viewpoint - my daughters and I were walking along Whitehall, by pure hapchance came across the incident, we found it very amusing, I filmed it, then had a nice chat with Charlie, we all hugged him and then went about our day. Later I stuck it on U-tube and so far it's had 10000 hits. That's all fairly cool from where I'm coming from. Some of the subsequent comments from people I've never known or met have ranged from funny and incisive, all the way to crass and ill-informed.

O course it's about thinking, but I don't mean on a personal level, I mean on a global/national or even local level. You think they could send police and soldiers to kill people if THEY said no. There are many other laws which may prohibit it such as the public order act, and of course common law (preventing breach of the peace), which are both decided by the police officer whether or not they are a breach of said laws.
