  • Thumbs up if malia brought you here and if she didnt look up her channel maliaaupair shes wonderful!

  • I've invited you on Goodreads (my name is Mel on it) and my goal is 100 books this year :) last year I reached my goal (81), so I'm going up again. In 2010 I managed to read 100, so I think I'll do just fine :)

  • What camera do you use? x

  • @HitchsGoingsOn I have a Canon 60D with a Tokina 11-16 wide angle lens and a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens

  • @booksandquills Thannkk you for replying! brilliant channel and i'm pretty impressed with the book reading, might have a go my self, not sure if I could do the movie thing: i usually fall asleep. I would love it if you had a look at my channel and feel free to come down to brighton to have some lessons in english accents haha x

  • So much bokeh in this video. I love it!

  • SUBSCRIBE!!!!

I knew you from tumblr first (via nanalew and meekakitty) and have been following you on that for a while and then I was like "what, she's one YouTube as well?" then I did a little dance.

Heads up though the world isn't going to end, charlie said so, and his views are based on NASA so . . .

I'm doing the 50 books thing as well

And the the Netherlands rule, I'm australian but I have an Opa (No Oma, the grandmother on that side is english)

    SO yeah WOOO

    Love your work

  • Easiest way to learn the 50 states: The fifty states song. Alabama, Alaska Arizona Arkansas...look it up. I think it's a requirement for every kindergartner in the us.

  • @stormfet Good idea! There's a few 50 States songs out there. The one I learned (and still know very well now at age 24) was "The 50 States That Rhyme."

  • When you started talking about quills I thought you were going to write a book this year. Also - read all the Jane Austen books, they are so lovely, and free on kindle if that helps.

  • I am a slow reader and tend to read long books, so I'm going to 20. Opposed to the 14, my good-reads tells me I read in 2011 (not including school books).

  • I only started likeing reading in May of 2011 and I read somewhere between 30-50 books more or less! My goal for 2012 is to read more than 50 books! Good luck with your goals

  • hey, this has inspired me to review 100 films myself. all on video! they'll all be going up on my channel.

  • I'm trying for 30 books which I'm reviewing on my personal blog (hopeandheart21[dot]blogspot[dot]com) and 15 works of literature which I'm reviewing on my project blog (hpobsessed21[dot]blogspot[dot]com).

  • Learn the states (50) by learning 50 nifty united states. Learned it 8 years ago, never forgotten it :)

  • Why not watch more movies? Step it up as little bit like 150? Maybe it's because I'm a huge movie buff but 100 movies doesn't seem that much to watch in a year.

  • I'm going for 25 books! I've already got one down.

  • Nickelodeon Election Connection had a very good song to learn all of the 43 USA presidents. it's on youtube. You should check it out; it helped me a lot in history class :)

  • Every time I pause this video at any part, your facial expression makes me laugh :)

  • i noticed halfway through the library you have an accent. and by that i mean not american. am i right?

  • @seeradurr Yes, I am from the Netherlands.

  • @booksandquills oh so cool! my roommate is norwegian. :)

  • I'm curious.. have you read Jane Eyre? It's one of my all-time favourite novels. If you've read it, what did you think of it? :)

  • @FrkHoltegaard Yes! I absolutely love it. I may have been influenced by the BBC mini series a little bit.

  • In regards to your learn all the presidents goal, I suggest listening to "The presidents" by Jonathan Coulton. It's very catchy and includes all the presidents minus Obama, but you probably already know who he is anyway.

  • Im already 3 books into the 50 book challenge but ill probably still fail because i have to spend half my time revising for prelims and then standard grade exams :'(

  • I for one know she has a english accent while talking dutch... so that shouldnt prove much of a challange

  • When she said Wednesday, and explosions I thought = EXPLOSION WEDNESDAY (Weezywaiter, even though it's not a thing yet)

  • I'm definitely doing the 50 book challenge and I'm also wanting to get better at playing guitar and make 35 YouTube videos this year.

  • I'm going to do the 50 book challenge this year! :D

    Ooo, 100 movies...that's a good idea!

  • Those are some good goals! i thought you were being serious about the quills haha. But that one did look really cool. I was really gonna try the 50 books challenge until someone pointed out that was about a book a week. So, i scaled back to 30.

in elementary school we learned this song, it's all the US states in alphabetical order.

    search youtube: "fifty nifty states"

you can skip about the 1st minute, hope it helps :)

  • You are an amazingly inspiring person.

  • Yeah learning all the presidents in america would be kinda hard since america is a continent with about 30 countries in it. You should learn the Animaniacs countries and states song.

  • What I would love to do is actually write a book. I know that there's a specific month for that, but I seem to fail at NaNoWriMo each year sooo I figured a year would be a good start. Especially to flesh out a nice story and then settle on writing it, then editing it as well. Attaining a job would be nice, and passing all my classes for this semester and finally graduating would be nice as well.

  • you inspired me to do the 50 book challenge (:

  • wow...i really loved ur video! amazing :D :D! subscribed hehehe! i must say those stuff were pretty awesome! i read 61 books in 2011 :)

  • I would do the 50 books challenge but I am such a slow reader that it takes me a month to read a 400-500 page book

  • I've tried to do the 50 book challenge the past two years as well - I'm going to try again. Third Time's the Charm, right?

  • i am not going to do the 50 books, but i'll totaly read 22 books in 2012... thats my goal :)

  • Number 3: RAWK SAWK!

  • photoshop takes time...You did pretty well last year!

I failed my 150 book challenge miserably last year... Barely got to a 100, still had to read about 5 books and I only had a few days left but I made it :D pfew. so yes, a new challenge this year, definitely going to try to read 150 books this year of which 25-50 should be on the '1001 books you have to read before you die' list. I still can't drive. 2012 will definitely be focused on that as well.

  • There isn't a british accent. Do you mean a classic english accent (upper class) or a regional accent. Try geordie or scouse, that could be amusing.

  • @wibblemania When I refer to 'british' I usually mean RP, which is what I was taught at uni. But I'm not sure exactly what kind of accent I'll try. Preferably something neutral.

  • @booksandquills There isn't a British accent.

  • What's your favourite song in the Pride & Prejudice songbook? :)

  • I can't be bothered to do anything in 2012.

  • Am totally doing the 50 book challenge, I look forward to chilling with you on Goodreads :)

  • We are already friends on Goodreads and I follow you on Tumblr so I am excited to see what this year brings!

  • So, question about the 100 films. Do they have to be ones you haven't seen?

  • @ifimjuliet Nope, you can do whatever you want!

  • I'm reading 100 books by the end of 2012. YEAH ! :D

  • I loved the "bye" at the end.

You did quite well on your challenges. I'll have to see how my own go and let you know. As for the 50 books, I cannot take up the challenge. I just have too much school for a commitment like that, but I'll do my best and let you know how many I get. :]

  • Morse code... different accents... driving... You're becoming a secret agent, aren't you?

  • I like your accent, american with British roots, ideal.

  • totally doing the 50 books challenge this year (although i'm aiming for 100!). book count is 2 so far :)

  • With my busy schedule & the fact that I read painfully slow I'm making a goal to read only 12 books this, BUT you have inspired me to read more so thank you!

  • My goal is to read100 books this year I'm also on the same page where i want to learn how to drive

  • Oof. Socks are tedious. I haven't finished either of the pairs I started. Good luck!

  • I've already read 4 books this year. 8D

  • I finished the 50 book challenge for the first time this year as well!

  • 50 books? Challenge accepted!

  • 50 books in a year? Challenge accepted! :D

  • So exited for this year's challenges.

  • is Explosion Wednesday really a thing yet though? :p

  • Someone's a Beard Lover :3

  • Also, I'm a little bit disappointed that there won't be quill reviews. Not even one?

  • Wait - it's 2012. WHAT?! Sanne, where did Eleven go?! I want Eleven back!

  • I've read one so far :P

  • i'm going to try the 50 books challenge!

  • Also - explosion Sunday - is that a thing?

  • You filled a video journal with a year's worth of videos. Count it!

  • Nice list! And that reminds me, I've got to read 'I am Number Four', so I can pass it to you! Will do that once I finish Ally Carter's Heist Society!

  • yay! I was worried for a bit when you said you would not do the 50 books challenge.

  • really impressed with your knitting btw that's great for a beginner. I've been knitting for about 3 years now and I find it really rewarding. :) Have you discovered ravelry yet? it really inspired me to knit more, love the free patterns and seeing suff other people made.

I want to try the 50 book challenge, and finish my sketch book (it's half full from the last year and a half) probably more importantly I need to make myself more employable :(

  • I'm reading 100. I don't know why, I just wanted to read more then 2011, I ended up reading 63, and somehow it got to 100.

    CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, SELF.

  • I only managed to read 35 books in 2011. I've lowered my goal to 40 for this year. It seems like a more manageable number. And I am glad to say, I already finished one book this year.

  • I'm 2 books into the fifty books challenge

  • I am well on my way to reading 50 books this year. I am 1 1/2 in!

Also, I think we're the same person. I jus learned to knit too.

  • ooo i see little rubber duckies:P

  • And not to make you jealous or anything (I swear I'm innocent) but I have the ability to switch between American and British and I am 100% certain of the fact that you can too :D

  • But, how will I know which quills are worth buying?! (Good luck with your goals!)

  • My challenge this year is 30 books. Are we still excited now? (a)

  • Je bent een innemend persoon alleen jammer dat je van boeken houdt :-) Een fijn 2012!

  • Also, just saw that TED talk about how telling your goals is bad (the video you posted on your resolutions video last year). So I'm not congratulating you on your resolutions. I'm telling you you're going to fail. Miserably. (Wow. I feel so mean. I'm just trying to help here though...)

  • So fun story. I just finished knitting and crocheting (try crocheting. It's way easier, and more fun in my opinion) my first pairs of socks.

I'm doing the 50 books challenge this year! I've already got two down. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Let it Snow. I'm also trying to update all my Goodreads from now on. I got it a while ago and then sort of forgot about it... but I'm using it again now!

  • whats your favorite song from pride and prejudice soundtrack?

  • when you brought up how you where neglecting the quills in your username, the first thing that came to mind was: "Oh shit, she's gonna start showing off her writing."

That's not to say i was disappointing with your idea to review quills. I know jack shit about quills and i wouldn't mind changing that.

  • Doing the 50 book challenge and the 100 Movie challenge. 3 Books read, 3 Movies watched :)

  • i prefer when your hair is curlier :)

  • I told myself that I am going to read 60 books

  • I'm doing the 50 books this year, one down, 49 to go!

  • You filled a notebook with PAINTINGS. I call that a success.

  • @Lidespam Ah I guess that's true!

  • SO MUCH BREATHING

  • @Lidespam INORITE

  • I'm still on the fence about getting a GoodReads account. I feel like it would be a lot of effort to put in all the books you have already read, but then again, it would be nice to know when/where I read what book.

Also, the "something" that you knitting could be an abundance of things! Like, uh...a really large book mark or a scarf for a dog or umm...a table runner for...a very small table.

  • hi im from america and we had to learn the states in elementary school my mother put a list of all the states on our fridge and and made me read the list before i opend it. it worked really well. mabey you could try that! Good Luck!

  • In 2012 i want to: 1. Read 50 books. 2. Knit (at least) one Hogwarts house scarf. 3. Have healthy substitutes. 4. Study, be organised and work hard. 5. Drink more water. 6. Curse less. 7. Complain less. 8. Relearn arabic. 9. Take more pictures. 10. Be more productive. ^^Busy year ahead, let's just hope all of that doesn't go to waste, what with the world ending and all that fun stuff! :D
  • ok this means I'm going to have to do the 50 books challenge

  • I am going to do the 40 book challenge. I only read 22 books last year.

  • I think I'm going to try the 50 book challenge, but since it's my first year of trying it I'm expecting to read about 25.

Do you accept anyone on goodreads?

  • @thekilljoypotato I accept EVERYONE :)

  • I completed the 50 books challenge in 2011 as well (actually I'd meant to do 40 but apparently I read 10 more books!), so I decided to try to read 55 this year. Considering how big my "to read" list already is, I'm definitely not lacking in books to read but my biggest problem always comes down to trying to juggle too many books at once and feeling in the mood for one book one day and another book the next.

  • This is so weird that I was doing my homework with my new quills and I clicked on your video randomly for a break :)

  • SANNE!!!!! wow, overachiever :D heehee :D

  • If we can't know it yet why did you mention it?! Now it's the only thing I want to know in the world!

(I'm kidding. But seriously. I bet it's something cool.)

  • Mind telling me what camera do you use? :>

  • @almostcorny I use a Canon 60D (and a Tokina wide angle lens).

  • @booksandquills Thanks!

  • I'm doing the 50 books challenge as well and can gladly say I've read four (I also finished one I've been trying to finish for months) so far. I'm proud of myself. I hope all of us doing some kind of challenge do the best we can and succeed.

Oh and almost forgot the most important thing...Don't forget to have fun!

  • Ik ga voor het eerst meedoen aan de 50 books challenge en ik heb tot nu toe twee boeken gelezen :} Succes, Sanne! (trouwens, je lijstje van 2011 op je tumblr moet bijgewerkt worden! :P)

  • Oh. I actually thought you were going to review quills. Now I'm just a little bit disappointed...

  • That piano soundtrack book, is it from 1995 or 2005 ? and where did you get it?

I am joining in with the 50 books challenge, read 3 already!

  • @Reneederland 2005 and it was a birthday present from a friend (two years ago). Amazon / Pride-Prejudice-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/dp/1423411137 (It looks like this one).

  • Can books for school count for the 50 books challenge?

  • @beyondthebluu Yes! But you can make your own rules of course.

  • States are easy to remember but presidents hats off to ya good luck.

  • I would love to do the 50 books challenge, but with school I'm scared 50 is just going to be overkill! So I'm doing a roughly 30 books minimum challenge but will try to get higher!! One year I will get to 50 though!

  • I added you on Goodreads a few days ago, definitely going to read 50 books this year :) Finished my first one already ^^ En neeeee, niet nog meer vuurwerk!

  • The 50 Books Challenge sounds like a lot of fun - I even convinced three of my friends to do it with me! =] So far I've finished two and am working on my third(crazy love by Francis Chan). Then it's Phantom of the Opera!

  • I'm doing a 100-bok challenge this year! Wish me luck (:

Also, good luck to you on 50-books, Sanne!

  • you inspired me and I definetly try to read 50 books this year.thanks for that.

  • EXPLOSION WEDNESDAY.

  • Alright you got me in. I orignally set a 20 books goal for 2012, due to me being realistic about how I'll do. Reading 50 on the other hand will be an actual challenge (due to me sometimes losing complete interest, and might end up reading just one book over the timespan of two months.

Btw, did you count audiobooks as books read for the challenge last year?

  • wheezy waiter YES!

Also, as someone from America, I can tell you that knowing all the presidents is not actually that useful. I never learned them, and it's been fine for me... its kinda one of those things they make you learn in elementary school to learn how to memorize.

  • @rainbowbubblesXD It seems like a fun party trick and it's a nice challenge :D

  • I've already read two books. But I don't think I have 50 books or what ones to read

  • Fifty book challenge will be a big fail for me... But I guess my reading has gone way down hill.

  • wheezy explosions!

  • I'm doing the challenge, again, this year! I'll be making videos on my channel, too, I guess. Haha.

  • Wow, well done for the 50 books!

You've inspired me to go for it this year, but because I'm doing the Leaving Cert (the final exam in school in Ireland) and it takes up nearly all of my time, I'm allowing myself to count books I reread. I've only been subscribed for a few weeks but I keep aspiring to be more like you! :)

  • I think explosion sunday should be a thing. I mean you don't have to make a decision now you could try it out for a bit - it's not official.

  • I love the fact that you still take new years resolutions to heart. Your success rate in this last year was great and I know you will do even better this year.

  • For the 50 books challenge, do the books have to be books that you haven't read before?

  • @Camilleypow You can do whatever you want! I can't do re-reads in the same year, but all other things are fine.

  • @booksandquills Thank you! I think I might make it a rule that I have to read 50 new books because that will make it much harder.

  • I'm joining you this year for the 50 books challenge and I signed up and everything. :)

And now I have to put all the books I own on Goodreads...argh...

  • I can do all the states and most of the countries. I'm british, so I think i would (try) to learn all the PMs first. I like the idea of 100 films and 50 books but i just dont think i'll have enough time :(

  • If you want to practice States & Countries, I recommend the geography quizzes at Sporcle. I use it every once in a while, it has taught me the U.S. States, and most of the countries in the world. Also, it's fun to do!

  • I've already read 10 books so far, BUT back to Uni next week and will NOT have time to read many so yh. I'm trying the 50 books challenge though! :)

  • You should check out the animaniacs songs about the countries of the world and the states and presidents of America, they might help.

  • I've been attempting the 50 Books Challenge every year for the past few and I have succeeded every time...until I started my university course. Ironically, I have read less books whilst studying English Literature than I did before. I guess it's because I have less time for recreational reading...going to try and change that this year!

  • See you on goodreads, just so I can copy your recommendations :)

  • What I want to do is like/fave this video, but youtube is refusing to allow this to happen!

Seriously though I am still deciding. I joined Goodreads, and Ima give this whole 50 books thing a try. I am thinking (and when I will probably be thinking about this for a while) about starting to make youtube videos. And a bunch of college stuff related to computer science which... well yeah XD

I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavours (especially the accent thing)!

  • Definitely trying out the 50.books challenge this year! And knitting is actually pretty fun if you can do it - especially if you can watch tv at the same time! :D

  • You are my favourite YouTuber! Greeting from Ireland! Don't forget to visit the Emerald Isle someday!

  • I genuinely thought you were going to do reviews of quills..

  • Woo! Sign Language! Even if it isn't ASL lol

  • I managed 90 last year, in the reading challenge (although I was aiming for a hundred *hangs head in shame*). I know I won't get nearly so many this year though because I'm at uni, so I'm thinking of aiming for maybe 70?

  • I'm joining you on the 50 books challenge! Thus far I've read 1 and a half, hopefully by the end of the month I'll have read 5 :)

  • Seeing I have lots of books to read anyway, I might as well do the 50 books challenge. I did want to read LotR this year, though, and I don't think I'll be able to read 1k pages in one week :P But yes! I will accept this challenge.

  • That's a great idea, I'm also going to try and watch 100 movies this year. Only 99 more and I'm done!

  • I don't understand why you would want to read 50 books in a year. I think I can enjoy books more when I take the time to read it and don't think that I still have to read a lot of books to have read enough by the end of the year. Or do you do it so you because otherwise you don't read at all?? Because I do want to read more.

  • I am also doing the 50 books challenge - but one of the books are fixed - it's Les Misérables. I have already started it, but I suspect it will take at least a couple of months to finish - it's over 1400 pages long. I suspect I will be reading other books while I read it. I am active on Goodreads, yay!

  • your videos always motivate me to do something good with my free time! I'm a new subscriber but I am already in love with your videos!!! :))

  • I'm going to do something similar to the 50 book challenge thing, but with30 books instead. Actually, do revision guides count? I've been reading a lot of revision guides recently 'cause of exams...

  • I second "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro! It's a hauntingly beautiful book.

  • @superclarinetgirl This is on my to-read list :D Looking forward to it.

  • Since I managed to complete the 50 books challange last year, this year I'm going for 60 books. I also want to get my driver's license this year. And a job. And possibly write a book. Let's see how many of those goals i can actually accomplish.

Should be an interesting year at least. Happy 2012 and good luck with your own goals :D

  • Sanne: Pro-Quiller.

  • So you had a British accent then went to America and got an American accent. What you British accent back? LIVE IN BRITAIN! Yaaaay! (I have a sneaky feeling that might be your other secret reason...?)

  • Have you read the book 'Never let me go' Kazuo Ishiguro?

Or any of his books? :)

  • Women speaking English with an educated British accent is very sexy. I'm not a native speaker so I know how different all accents sound. Is that your 'secret' reason? hehe

  • Learning morse code? Cool. I've got an amateur radio licence and I've kept trying to learn morse but never really cracked it so perhaps I'll see if I can get it done this year as well.

  • where are you going on your road trip? :D

  • I think you did pretty well as well! I'm up for the 50 books challenge as well on goodreads (dustfinger) and I'm already 3% ahead, wohoo! I suppose learning all the states and so on would be a good idea, I might try that one as well, but I'm not gonna watch 100 Movies. Im just not a mivie person I guess ; ) I really wanna keep up with my blog though, and learn how to play the melodica ;)

To the accent: Is that for theater/actor reasons maybe? Just a guess ;)

  • I'm actually gonna try and read 20 books this year cause I tried to read 20 this year and only got 17, so gonna go for 20 again this year

  • Look great with this makeup.

Book to read - 'Why Does e=mc²?' by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw, fantastic read.

  • Happy to be one of the first :D Happy 2012 and congratulations on the 50 books challenge!

  • oooh, never been this early before!
