With all due respect Dr. Banks call it what it is marriage is a business and you could also say that business is for white people. Unravel this, that it is mathematically impossible for there to be more marriages, divorces or the lack thereof amoungst blacks in America. Business requires resources and there is a group of americans that have been working at a disadvantage. A good title would be "The Business of Marriage is for White People" but then that would be good business for a black author
How do we come to terms with such a brutal past? Especially when we watch as the same people continue to violate and destroy the Black woman's men, children, family, and community? I have dated white men, but something way down deep arises from within, causing me to question the possible ramification of "sleeping with the enemy!" How do I come to terms with such ideals?
@kglove08 Try not to make race to much of a factor; the primary focus should be on him being human. And you loving this human being despite the color of his skin; make race unimportant in the way that you see your husband, or boyfriend. Focus on how he treats you and the happiness you both share; yes Black's and Caucasians have a devastating past indeed, but what matters the most is the love you both share. Love is stronger than any other emotion we can feel. Good luck kglove08.
Mr Banks, I read your book and I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for your work. Your brilliant explanation of the state of Black America today so poignantly touches on the heart beat of "black life." My question to you is, how do Black women come to terms with the legacy of slavery we still have yet to overcome. A legacy riddled with memories of white slave masters and overseers (and anyone else they allowed to feed on the black woman) pummeling and raping the Black woman!
Is "Is Marriage for White People?" the right title for the book? You do say that even white people are turning away from marriage. The title of the book should have been, Is Marriage for Anyone?. (Nobody seems to want to get married except for members of the gay community.) You accepted the girl's poor understanding of blacks and their rates of marriage, but you didn't get into her poor understanding of whites and their dropping rates of marriage.
I heard you on the Tom Joyner show this morning, this book sounds very interesting. I can't wait to read it. I do have a question, do you discuss why so many young college educated women (18-26) have no desire to be in a committed relationship and no desire to get married until they get close to the age of 30? At this point marriage is tainted in their minds, many of them have children, which brings in "baby daddy drama", trust issues, etc?

Men of all races don't want to deal with the system and risk divorce. That is why you see the decline in marriage in all races.
