@187MuRdaCSS At 3:35, Ivo mentions the magnetics and how you can get more distance, but to elaborate, the brake is adjusted to weight of the lure, and the magnetics control the resistance on the spool. So if it's set at 10, this will have a high resistance. As you back off, it will lighted up and this is when you will get more casting distance. Start with at about 8 and then begin to go down a notch at a time. If your setting is at 0, there will be no resistance, so be careful ;)
@skullscooter65 Hi Chris - glad to hear you are into fishing at a young age - it is a fantastic sport and a lot of fun. If your mom loves cooking, then that's the perfect combination as you can bring home the catch :)
@thundermistlures yup (: i watched one of your video's well i watched all of them before but my mom asked me to make dinner one day so the first thing i did was look at your video how to fillet a bass :) thank you it made dinner easy and good
@MrSmokingKronic On the Melaluka, if it doesn't have a button to allow you to cast, it will have a lever on the same side as your reel handle is on. Move the lever backwards or forwards - this will disengage the spool and allow you to cast.
@thundermistlures No worries ill give it another try, i was trying in the front yard last night with a lure. but im unsure if i had enough weight of on it or not cuz when i tried to cast it didnt, so i tried a little harder, n got a little birds nets, Once iv got more weight on, do i let tenison off abit to allow the weight to float down before casting...
@MrSmokingKronic It is definitely easier to learn by using a heavier weight and also use heavier monofilament line - such as 20 lb or more. Start off with the tension a bit higher and then work your way back, one notch at a time. This should help make a difference.
Well, that actually summed it all up! I had been using a 5 foot rod with thin line and I had it set to 10. Thnx for clearing it up, I'll see if I can get a video up on this reel.
@thundermistlures hi for Christmas I got a shirmano curado 200g6 !! I wanted to know if u would recommend 30lb triline mono?? Merry Christmas I hope u have a wonderful 2012 year from family to fishing.
@laxinFL0R1DA Congrats on the new Curado - nice reel! Suggest using the 30 lb mono over the 30 lb. braid. The mono will have a thicker diameter and will cast out and retrieve in much nicer, causing less potential for birds nests.
@thundermistlures well wats the highest pound test .... 30lb???? If notcan u recommend a saltwater baitcaster that can take 30lb mono or braid?? Thanks for the other response it was very helpful!
@laxinFL0R1DA The Diawa will easily take 30 lb line with no problem - it's just that you won't be able to get as much line on the spool - perhaps 80 - 100 yards depending on how thick your mono line is. If you get a thin mono, then you will be able to get much more line on (like Berkley sensation or Stren Maga Thin - so try to find a thin diameter line and you will be able to spool up and have a great time on the water!
About the round baitcaster- wat brand and name is it- and wat pound test can it take(yards/lbs mono braid????)
nice vid though if only some people would watch this video and stop saying how baitcast reels are gay and are only for freshwater- they dont understand.....
@laxinFL0R1DA This reel was actually a Cabelas branded reel, which is no longer made. It is equivalent to a Daiwa reel I have as well, Model: Daiwa Coastal, inshore special, 153HL (L is for left hand model). It's an excellent reel and will hold 160 yds of 10 lb, or 140 yards of 12 lb or 120 yards of 14 lb mono.
Thanks for tuning in and glad you enjoyed the video - until next time, good luck and good fishing!
@PhilliesPhan43 That reel was a Cabelas Brand reel, "megaroyal plus" - it's a good quality reel, fairly well priced - not sure if they are still making them under this exact name or not?
I just picked up an Abu Garcia reel on sale at canadian tire and had that wild birds nest...is there a minimum weight I need on it to avoid complications too? or just technique?
@grady450 Technique is important, and start practising with heavy line, such as 20 lb mono. Make sure your adjustments are set properly and you should do fine.......practice with a heavy lure as well as this also makes it easy to learn.
@captainpegs07 A med/hev rod will give you more strength on the hook set where as a med/light is more "whimpy" on the hook set. Thus, us a med/light for smaller games fish and a med/hev rod for those bigger fish.
I know this is probably a dumb question/s , but i'm new to fishing game. Can you put any kind of bait on any rod / reel like a spinner or a lure or live bait or artificial? And do you always need a leader for your line? And how long is the leader? If somebody would answer me i would appreciate it very much. Thanks.
@Ridgey55 You adjust the brake to the weight of the lure. Start with a loose setting on your brake & then tighten it up until such time your lure just falls slowly on its own.
The Magnetics control your spool, so , start off with a tighter setting and then begin to back off on it once you are comfortable casting. if you set the magnetic control to 0, you will have a completely free spinning spool, so don' t use that setting unless you are really good. Try watching the video one more time.
can you use a baitcaster if it is windy outside? I predominantly fish off the shore on Lake Michigan in chicago, and we get a LOT of windy days. I like to spend my time fishing, not dealing with birdsnests all day
@jumar1281 If you are casting into the wind, it is much more difficult. If you are casting with the wind, it's not a problem.
When casting into the wind, if you are casting something heavier, it would be easier, but if you are trying to cast something light, you most likely will end up with a birds nest at some point.
@HERSHEY559 ...not really....any bait caster will be able to be loaded up with 6 lb test line, but the line will end up "digging" into each other as pressure is applied when reeling in. IT really is best to use a spinning reel in this case.
@awesome4171 Two great tips I learn about baitcasting reel from these guys. 1)Cast side way and make sure your reel is side way too. It will prevent less backlash. 2) Cast your farthest distance and pull out at least 15-20 more feet out. Put a tape inside to hold the line. This will prevent further backlash and digs. I think this is probably the best tip you'll ever get.
I just got a new daiwa exceler and when i first got it, it reeled fine but when I went to put the line on when i reeled it would go but it wouldn't reel in line ( i was using 8 lb line wich was fine according to the website) its kinda hard to explain. the ouside would go but the inside where the line goes woundn't spin.
@SuperWhiteOpS Perhpas your drag was turned all the way to the loose position? Try tightening your drag and see if this problem still exists. Otherwise, it is possible that the core of your spool has come apart from the sides of the spool?
Thanks for writing in and good luck. Hope you get it to work.
i just baught a kalex 61 bait caster...an i plan on using it for boat fishing, or banking with lures on my local river! so bait casters r great, but i still love my shimano 4500 spinning reel!!!! guess it depends on ur comfort level with ur reels
I'm learning how to use a baitcaster right now and I find it easier just to set the spool tension just a little under where it should be and whip the hell out of it.
Just remember to keep a good amount of pressure on your spool for the first half second or so and it should fly way out with no backlashing. :)
@xyang26 When retrieving the lure, your thumb does not have to be on your spool. Just make sure the line is snug when you first begin to reel in and things should be fine.
@xyang26 No it does not. To be honest, when I throw, I don't even touch the spool. I only touch it to stop going, and don't cause an overrun. Just a simple, light tap on the line. Make sure to not touch the line too fast, and too hard because this will cause your bait to go flying into the water very hard, with a large splash.
@36drifterboy Nice to hear form you and it's best to "thumb the spool" once the lure is hits the water. Just let us know if you have any other questions a we are happy to help!
Fishing with a baitcaster is a lot like driving a stick shift. It's hard at first, but you get more control over what your doing and it's overall a lot more fun.
Does your thumb stay on the spool the whole time or do you press it only when it hits the water. I JUST got one and i am having a very hard time with distance casting AND placing it where i want as far as accuracy goes. I started by making the tention VERY tight because i had so many problems the first 3 casts. I STILL get it with it tight though and it doesn't go far. I clicked another brake out last night. Need to test more. My bait doesn't fall when i press the button though.
@mfasouletos You will want to thumb the spool when your lure hits the water. Also, if your lure does not fall when you disengage the spool, your settings are a bit tight....best to loosen up on them.
Also, try using real heavy mono to practice with (like 30 lb test) and try to cast using a 2 oz sinker, just for practice - this will help you. Keep trying and you'll be a pro in no time!
@mfasouletos If you buy a crappy baitcasting reel, I doubt you'll get the distance that you want. Make sure you buy one that is at least $100+ and you'll see a significant improvement on your cast. I have Abu Revo STX paired with a Duckett Magic Rod and it casted smoothly. If I set the spool tension and brake correctly, I don't even hardly have to thumb at all. Just make sure you don't force cast it like Evo said. Casting should be natural, not a forced motion for the Baitcasting reel.
@Wisc0Fish I like to cast with my right hand and set the hook with my right hand, so for me, it makes sense to crank with my left (even though I am right handed) Many people cast with their right hand and then switch hands to also reel with their right hand.
@saddrums One of the main reasons people use baitcsters, is because they will handle heavy line....for example, if you try to spool up 50lb test mono on a spinning reel, it won't work out that well - but on a bait caster, it's not a problem.
You are right though, there is more involved with using a bait casting reel. thanks for writing in and good luck on the water
@TheTylerAirsoft If you plan on fishign for muskies, the heavy action would be the best choice - but for most other game fish, the medium action rod should do just fine, so long as it has a bit of "back bone" and is not "flimsy"
@Bloodscribe44 In this case, it most likely would, although it would fall slower as the water would resist a bit. So if you are not using a lure, but you are using a jig, adjust the break so that the jig is falling slowly and you'll be o.k.
Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.
Many "instructors" try to complicate the mechanics behind using a casting reel. This video shows just how simple the process really is. Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice you can follow while learning this style of reel would be to PRACTICE. It's the only way to learn!
i have a question about the small baitcast. Im just starting to get into bass fishing , ive been trout fishing all my life but have been wanting to get a bait cast for my local lake which has some bass, i noticed you said put at least a 10-12 pond test, i was wondering that may be to thick for the crystal clear mountain water because i usually only use about a 2-4 pnd test but that is for trout. can u help? thanks
@DeadMaauu5 Yes we can help.....use yuor 10 - 12 lb test line and then tie on a 2 - 4 lb test leader line. Use a uni knot to tie the two lines together (we also have a short video giving a clear demo on the uni knot).
The leader line should be at least as the legth of your rod, and could be a slong as twice the lenth of your rod.
Also, if you use a fluorocarbon leader, that would even be better!
Great vid, thanks for posting! I just got my first baitcaster yesterday and am looking forward to start practicing on it next week! I got a Abu Garcia Revo S low profile baitcaster with an All Star Rod for $100... oh yeah so excited :-)
ok so i wanna get a baitcaster for my arsenal..and dont know what brand i should use for rod and reel..but i know i want a right handed retrieve but other than that it comes down to a brand for rod/reel..also i got a ugly stik shakespeare..spinning..but i might have to change the reel soon am i thinking of a pflueger president xt 40
@Pararescue001 Pflueger president is an excellent bait casting reel - the model 2LP is a bit smaller/lighter than the 2WLP model, which can handle more line capacity. Pflueger is a good choice. If you like the Ugly Stik, they also make a decent bait casting rod as well. If you are going to be using jigs or live bait, look for a graphite rod - if you are going to be mainly using crank baits, look for a fiberglass rod.
@NLlockpicker Thin Dia. braided line is better for spinning reels, not bait casting.
On bait casters, thin lines will "dig" into each other as you reel in, especially if there is any pressure (like fighting fish) and you will birds nests.
Use thick dia. line on a bait caster for best results. If you really want to use braid, look for a thicker dia. braid and be sure to use a fluorocarbon leader.
Check out Thundermist Fishing Tips .com for more line tips - thanks and good fishing!
practice casting plugs are a good tool for people trying to get used to using a baitcaster. It will help you fine tune the settings on your reel, practice casts w/o backlashes, etc.
@TheNinjarider06 Try backing off on your brake setting and your magnetic setting, if you have one....set teh dails closer to zero and see if this helps - you may want to slowly work your way down towards zero, in order to prevent a bird's nest.
If you are still having trouble, snap on a lure and try again. With a 7' rod and 10 lb mono, you should be able to get decent distance with your cast.
For casting bottom rigs, do you use the same method when you cast? Like bringing the spool to a stop before it hits the water? If so, how does the rig get to the bottom if you aren't allowing the spool to wind off of as it dives into the water?
@nmigliore When casting a bottom rig, it is a bit different than casting a lure. You can set your reel so that the sinker drops slowly, and then back off of it a bit.
Try casting and be sure to keep your thumb close to the spool and follow the same technique as casting a lure i.e. do not try to "whip" the rig out there. Once the rig hits the water, if your spool is spinning fast, you will want to use your thumb to slow it down.
@thejordanlikesyoutub Sounds great. I'm getting one to. Just saying what you call a birds nest most people call a back lash. I'm not trying to be a smart alack just giving you some info. I hope your experiences with your new bait caster reel are great!!
@MADSkate7 Yes, you can use your bait casting reel for bottom rigs while fishing off the surf...in fact, it works great for bottom rigs.
We love using bait casting rods & reels with bottom rigs. In fact, if you have not seen the "T-Turn" 3way swivel yet, be sure to check it out as it makes a great combination for a bottom rig.
So go ahead and enjoy your new bait casting reel and good luck fishing on the surf - hope you catch plenty!
@MADSkate7 If you are going to be vertically jigging all day, you may want to go with the tear-drop style. It will be much more comfortable for you to use.
I'm looking to a buy my first baitcasting combo soon. I mostly use artificial plastics such as worms, bush hogs, top water frogs, etc.. some I use a weight with (anywhere from 1/16 OZ to 1/4 OZ) and some I fish weightless. Do you think a baitcast combo is ideal for this? I plan to use 12 LB mono on the baitcast reel, but I'm curious about the abilities to cast these artificial baits, particularly the weightless ones.
@nmigliore When you buy your bait caster, you will want to start off suing heavier lures to cast with. You can cast weightless lures and you can also cast light ones (such as 1/16 or 1/4 as you mention) but it is very difficult and will take some practice.
Good luck with the purchase of your new bait casting reel and when picking one out, be sure to look for the instant anti reverse feature.
@thundermistlures Thanks! Also just 1 other thing that popped into my head - what about when using a baitcaster it for jigging (like Ivo does in another video; I think its the white perch jig video?) .. ? How do you 'cast' that if you want to drop it straight down a few feet in front of you? Doesn't the lure/weight stop when it hits the water (thus, it doesn't sink to the bottom to jig)? Thanks!
@nmigliore In this case, when you are vertically jigging, you are not really casting the lure...you are just letting it drop vertically.
Thus, you can set the tension so that it stops when it hits the water, and then back off on it so that it is allowed to free fall at a steady pace. That would be a perfect setting and you should be able to jig, tangle free!
You forgot to explain the magnetic.
187MuRdaCSS 1 week ago
@187MuRdaCSS At 3:35, Ivo mentions the magnetics and how you can get more distance, but to elaborate, the brake is adjusted to weight of the lure, and the magnetics control the resistance on the spool. @MrSmokingKronic On the Melaluka, if it doesn't have a button to allow you to cast, it will have a lever on the same side as your reel handle is on. Move the lever backwards or forwards - this will disengage the spool and allow you to cast.

@xyang26 No it does not. To be honest, when I throw, I don't even touch the spool. I only touch it to stop going, and don't cause an overrun. Just a simple, light tap on the line. Make sure to not touch the line too fast, and too hard because this will cause your bait to go flying into the water very hard, with a large splash.
xserverxfanatic 7 months ago
do you keep your thumb on the spool the whole time or only right as it starts to slow down ? sorry i jus got mine
36drifterboy 8 months ago

My bait doesn't fall when i press the button though.
mfasouletos 8 months ago in playlist Fishing
@mfasouletos You will want to thumb the spool when your lure hits the water. Also, if your lure does not fall when you disengage the spool, your settings are a bit tight....best to loosen up on them.
Also, try using real heavy mono to practice with (like 30 lb test) and try to cast using a 2 oz sinker, just for practice - this will help you. Keep trying and you'll be a pro in no time!
Until next time good luck and good fishing.
thundermistlures 8 months ago
@mfasouletos If you buy a crappy baitcasting reel, I doubt you'll get the distance that you want. Make sure you buy one that is at least $100+ and you'll see a significant improvement on your cast. I have Abu Revo STX paired with a Duckett Magic Rod and it casted smoothly. If I set the spool tension and brake correctly, I don't even hardly have to thumb at all. Just make sure you don't force cast it like Evo said. Casting should be natural, not a forced motion for the Baitcasting reel.

i write left handed play sports right handed, but i cast left handed and reel with my right so is that a right hand reel?
dennislogston 8 months ago
@dennislogston In your case, you will need to use a right handed reel - thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.
thundermistlures 8 months ago
I see your not the only person that prefers a left handed BC reel. . . i thought it was just me!!!
Wisc0Fish 8 months ago
@Wisc0Fish I like to cast with my right hand and set the hook with my right hand, so for me, it makes sense to crank with my left (even though I am right handed) Many people cast with their right hand and then switch hands to also reel with their right hand.
Thanks for writing in and good fishing.

i dont get why people use baitcasters, it seem like to much of a hassle than anything
saddrums 8 months ago
@saddrums One of the main reasons people use baitcsters, is because they will handle heavy line....for example, if you try to spool up 50lb test mono on a spinning reel, it won't work out that well - but on a bait caster, it's not a problem.
You are right though, there is more involved with using a bait casting reel. thanks for writing in and good luck on the water
thundermistlures 8 months ago
@TheTylerAirsoft If you plan on fishign for muskies, the heavy action would be the best choice - but for most other game fish, the medium action rod should do just fine, so long as it has a bit of "back bone" and is not "flimsy"
a one piece rod woudl also be preferred.
Thanks for writing in and good lcuk on the water.

would a 14 lb cajun line be ok for a shakespeare agility teardrop baitcast reel?
bastardoboy180 9 months ago
@Bloodscribe44 In this case, it most likely would, although it would fall slower as the water would resist a bit. So if you are not using a lure, but you are using a jig, adjust the break so that the jig is falling slowly and you'll be o.k.
Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

Many "instructors" try to complicate the mechanics behind using a casting reel. This video shows just how simple the process really is. Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice you can follow while learning this style of reel would be to PRACTICE. It's the only way to learn!

i have a question about the small baitcast. Im just starting to get into bass fishing , ive been trout fishing all my life but have been wanting to get a bait cast for my local lake which has some bass, i noticed you said put at least a 10-12 pond test, i was wondering that may be to thick for the crystal clear mountain water because i usually only use about a 2-4 pnd test but that is for trout. can u help? thanks
DeadMaauu5 11 months ago
@DeadMaauu5 Yes we can help.....use yuor 10 - 12 lb test line and then tie on a 2 - 4 lb test leader line. Use a uni knot to tie the two lines together (we also have a short video giving a clear demo on the uni knot).
The leader line should be at least as the legth of your rod, and could be a slong as twice the lenth of your rod.
Also, if you use a fluorocarbon leader, that would even be better!
Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

ok so i wanna get a baitcaster for my arsenal..and dont know what brand i should use for rod and reel..but i know i want a right handed retrieve but other than that it comes down to a brand for rod/reel..also i got a ugly stik shakespeare..spinning..but i might have to change the reel soon am i thinking of a pflueger president xt 40
Pararescue001 1 year ago
@Pararescue001 Pflueger president is an excellent bait casting reel - the model 2LP is a bit smaller/lighter than the 2WLP model, which can handle more line capacity. Pflueger is a good choice. If you like the Ugly Stik, they also make a decent bait casting rod as well. If you are going to be using jigs or live bait, look for a graphite rod - if you are going to be mainly using crank baits, look for a fiberglass rod.
Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.
thundermistlures 1 year ago
can you use a braded line with either one of the two reels?
as it is way thinner as a normal line
NLlockpicker 1 year ago
@NLlockpicker Thin Dia. braided line is better for spinning reels, not bait casting.
On bait casters, thin lines will "dig" into each other as you reel in, especially if there is any pressure (like fighting fish) and you will birds nests.
Use thick dia. line on a bait caster for best results. If you really want to use braid, look for a thicker dia. braid and be sure to use a fluorocarbon leader.
Check out Thundermist Fishing Tips .com for more line tips - thanks and good fishing!

I can"t cast far, I'm using a tear drop baitcast reel 10lb. mono. 7 foot rod, and swimbait lure. why?
TheNinjarider06 1 year ago
@TheNinjarider06 Try backing off on your brake setting and your magnetic setting, if you have one....set teh dails closer to zero and see if this helps - you may want to slowly work your way down towards zero, in order to prevent a bird's nest.
If you are still having trouble, snap on a lure and try again. With a 7' rod and 10 lb mono, you should be able to get decent distance with your cast.

For casting bottom rigs, do you use the same method when you cast? Like bringing the spool to a stop before it hits the water? If so, how does the rig get to the bottom if you aren't allowing the spool to wind off of as it dives into the water?
nmigliore 1 year ago
@nmigliore When casting a bottom rig, it is a bit different than casting a lure. You can set your reel so that the sinker drops slowly, and then back off of it a bit.
Try casting and be sure to keep your thumb close to the spool and follow the same technique as casting a lure i.e. do not try to "whip" the rig out there. Once the rig hits the water, if your spool is spinning fast, you will want to use your thumb to slow it down.
Thanks for writing in and good fishing.

I'm planning on buying my first baitcasting reel and I fish for Bass but I also Pier-Fish. Would it be okay to use rigs with a baitcasting reels?
MADSkate7 1 year ago
@MADSkate7 Yes, you can use your bait casting reel for bottom rigs while fishing off the surf...in fact, it works great for bottom rigs.
We love using bait casting rods & reels with bottom rigs. In fact, if you have not seen the "T-Turn" 3way swivel yet, be sure to check it out as it makes a great combination for a bottom rig.
So go ahead and enjoy your new bait casting reel and good luck fishing on the surf - hope you catch plenty!

@thundermistlures Thanks, but I haven't purchased one yet though, but do u think i should use the tear drop or circle baitcasting rees?

@MADSkate7 If you are going to be vertically jigging all day, you may want to go with the tear-drop style. It will be much more comfortable for you to use.

I'm looking to a buy my first baitcasting combo soon. I mostly use artificial plastics such as worms, bush hogs, top water frogs, etc.. some I use a weight with (anywhere from 1/16 OZ to 1/4 OZ) and some I fish weightless. Do you think a baitcast combo is ideal for this? I plan to use 12 LB mono on the baitcast reel, but I'm curious about the abilities to cast these artificial baits, particularly the weightless ones.
nmigliore 1 year ago
@nmigliore When you buy your bait caster, you will want to start off suing heavier lures to cast with. You can cast weightless lures and you can also cast light ones (such as 1/16 or 1/4 as you mention) but it is very difficult and will take some practice.
Good luck with the purchase of your new bait casting reel and when picking one out, be sure to look for the instant anti reverse feature.
Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.
thundermistlures 1 year ago
@thundermistlures Thanks! Also just 1 other thing that popped into my head - what about when using a baitcaster it for jigging (like Ivo does in another video; I think its the white perch jig video?) .. ? How do you 'cast' that if you want to drop it straight down a few feet in front of you? Doesn't the lure/weight stop when it hits the water (thus, it doesn't sink to the bottom to jig)? Thanks!
nmigliore 1 year ago
@nmigliore In this case, when you are vertically jigging, you are not really casting the lure...you are just letting it drop vertically.
Thus, you can set the tension so that it stops when it hits the water, and then back off on it so that it is allowed to free fall at a steady pace. That would be a perfect setting and you should be able to jig, tangle free!
Thanks again for writing in and good fishing.
