Ever wondered how fast a potato travels when it comes out of the gun? It goes 135 km/h (84miles/hour)!
I built a simplyfied version of this gun. I was able to shot 130 - 140 meters (150 yards), not the most powerfull one ever built, but still awsome.
When it was completed I tested it with a rigg with a couple of laserbeams and sensors registring the beams 20 800 times/sec. Then I fiered the gun through the beams analysed the data. I found that the potato went 135 km/h (84 miles/h)
Yes, but much faster and the ball would be a blur, which is not to be desired. The bottom line is, that was how fast my spud-gun was firing the golf-balls.
You can estimate the speed by looking at how far the golf ball moves per frame on the really skinny shots and multiplying that distance by 1200. So if the ball moves 1 inch per frame, it was going at 100fps.
The exilim has different aspect ratios depending on the speed selected. 300fps is roughly a SD-resolution video image, 600 is a widescreen presentation, and 1200 is a strip. It's a limitation of the number of pixels per second the camera can read, compress, and store on the memory card. 1200 fps = 4x300 fps, so 1/4th of the number of pixels per frame.
Completely random observation: the after-effects of hitting the egg (?) at high velocity looks a lot like the spaghettification of nebulae in outer space. Show this to NASA :)
What's with the mass of water? And the wadding? Seems to be an air pressure gun, in which you would need to stop your wadding before it gets more than about a foot from the barrel. Try a plastic insert with a string you hold on to. Works a charm.
wow the ending was amazing

mhm... but 100fps is a little to slow, that's how fast you throw?? :O

i wished they come out with a 2000fps model, or even 4000.
anyways wat's the muzzle velocity of the projectile?
newcomer9747 2 years ago
It depended on how much hairspray propellant was used and how well the wadding worked, but >100 feet per second easy.
MadOverlord 2 years ago
if i observe correctly, the propellant blow by the projectile out the muzzle before the projectile's exit?
newcomer9747 2 years ago
Yes; the wet paper wadding I used did not make a perfect seal.

u meen 1000 feet per second easy?? :)

No, 100. 1000fps is bullet speed.

What's with the extremely wide aspect ratio? Did you have an anamorphic lens on there or something?

Very nice...lots to be done with spud guns: or as I called them when used in my college physical science class: "mass accelerators" LOL
