Grunge is actually a pretty well defined genre, with the advent of bands like Mudhoney (& Green River), Pearl Jam, & The Toadies. You can tell they have a distinct sound, and this is "grunge". Also, I used to play in a punk band and be a huge Nirvana fan. I can play almost every Nirvana song ever written on guitar. I am a little bit familiar with music.

Also, way to go mentioning a book about the hardcore scene in a discussion about punk, like all punk should aspire to be hardcore. Also, it was a result of word-of-mouth. without advertising funds that's what happens. Also, although the Offspring really want to be punk, there's not much punk to their music, it's more of a post-grunge/hard rock fusion, but fuck genres.
