i liked the nirvana album on epitaph records the best. i think that's what inspired all of the post-90s mainstream "pop-punk" bands to utilize octave chords on less DIY/underground releases and non-college radio stations and other mediums. once the warped tour gained so many corporate sponsors and mtv2 started "keeping it real", that's when punk exploded into the "monster" that it is now. if anyone should get credit, it's NOFX and pennywise
@DrApeJohnsonDDS just show me ONE operation ivy or rancid song where they play octave chords and you can hog all of the glory. JUST ONE. and no, the rancid album where they cover nofx and nofx covers rancid doesn't count. IF YOU EVEN KNOW ABOUT THAT RECORD. get those adidas out of my face, newjack.
@ki11er1ife hey why dont shut your fucking mouth junior!stop naming ONLY epitaph trash bands and thier stupid little spin off side projects like op ivy who clearly rip ALL there shit off of amazing band like sublime and nirvana . asshole even reel big fish did more for punk roots.read a fucking book and before you CALL ME OUT realize that my fucking DAD knew henry rollins AND my mom at one point slept with every member of circle jerks so if someone has punk pedigree its me.look that up online
@Plozen-punk isn't defined, that's what makes it awesome.you're putting punk in a box, and trying to say that certain things make punk, punk.that's not entirely wrong, but it's very one-sided, and to me, seems to be aimed at saying that there's only one or two true punk bands.again, that's not what punk is. to me, punk is about expressing yourself however you want, without conforming or submitting to anyone.it's about going against what society considers to be the norm, which is what nirvana did
Grunge is actually a pretty well defined genre, with the advent of bands like Mudhoney (& Green River), Pearl Jam, & The Toadies. You can tell they have a distinct sound, and this is "grunge". Also, I used to play in a punk band and be a huge Nirvana fan. I can play almost every Nirvana song ever written on guitar. I am a little bit familiar with music.
wow... i used to feel like nirvana was a little unrecognized or apprecieated but it seems that pretty much every famous rockband has done 2 or 3 nirvana covers.
@KurtCobainologist well, The Ofspring and nirvana were friends, I believe the vocalist of the Offspring sings that intro in the original Territorial Pissings, with come on everybodey now, something something...
My 2 favourite bands of all time 1. The Offspring 2. Nirvana. This is amazing, my favourite band doing a cover of my other favourite band. I think i just jizzed.
@ILOVESHIT1000 lol you tard do you know the offspring are older than Nirvana? they can't really be rip offs. Bush I have no comment about. Seether openly state Nirvana as their biggest influence...
@thedudefromthehood Apparently you know nothing about music, nor appreciate real quality. Just because you enjoy their CD doesn't make their Music good. It takes real heart to be a musician. Offspring are good, but they ruined an amazing song. Therefore, take your comment, and fuck yourself with it.
@GreenerOnTheOthersid It is YOUR opinion about music and NOT facts!!! I enjoy their CD and I THINK (because its an opinion) they are one of the best bands. I LIKED (an opinion) this cover!!!
know the differences between facts and opinions, you cannot just judge an opinion and turn into a fact. Idiot.
@GreenerOnTheOthersid altho i agree that nirvana is better artistly slightly than the offspring they are /were hug corporate fucks themselves and dave grohl continues to be a corporate fuck to this day...just saying.. also i heard that there was no real meaning behind kurt cobain lyrics and that he just jotted random saying he saw ion bathroom walls into a notbook and mushed them altogether kind of laxidaisical into songs and made up random chorus because he liked the sound of the words.BITCH!
@shavemypubebeard That was the most ignorant comment I've read, and this is youtube. Dave grohl is a douche. Courtney Love is a cash whoring bitch. But there was nothing corporate about Nirvana, Nevermind was poppy because kurt liked poppy punk. But that's not the ignorant part. Did Beethoven or Bach have lyrics? I'm the walrus is just the result of an acid trip. Stop commenting, you sound like an inbred fuck.
@Gritagris yea none of nirvanas countless photo shoots was corporate in the slightest. you are a moron. what record label were they on again? maybe they started out not wanted to be fucking puppets but they ended up that way and kurt couldnt live with what he had done.dont try to teach me anything because you obviously know nothing and believe what you heros telll you next are you going to tell me that ozzfest was created to keep metal alive?
@Gritagris and you should probly shut the fuck up about ignorance.im not about to take musical advice from a stupid generic fuck who can only tell me "facts" that you can read in a rolling stone magazine or well known reputations famous people.no one cares about courney love why even mention it... why dont you research the wipers and the gordons from new zealand..post punk
@Gritagris then REALIZE kurt wasnt so groundbreaking after all...and that nirvana was abuncha cult band fan boy that put a sound into the forfront and made it popular and since most havent heard it before it becomessssss....new! ...exciting!!!! original!!!! jesus christ people are clueless no wonder music has only digressed since....b.t.w. i actually enjoy nirvana but they opened no doors they are just as bad as boy bands .its not lyrical content its how it it sold to you.u get it tard>?
@shavemypubebeard Way to go, you're probably one of those kids who listen to Nevermind only. Nirvana created a whole new breed of pop-punk, and their sound has layed way for so much of the rock we hear today. Also, Nirvana wasn't brought to the front. How fucking stupid are you? Sub-pop gave fuck all cash to promote Nevermind, and only estimated for 50,000 sales, it spread by word of mouth, because people appreciated good music, and because other's just liked the hit songs. Go home kid.
@Gritagris i liked insestide the best... u sure it wasnt mtv there tough guy? thats how i found out about them i was also 9 went nevermind came out im sure if i was older i woulda know about bleach homey.btw i lost my copy of nevermind in the hurricane i like actual punk music anyways search discharge or uk 82 for some or kurts influences kid
@shavemypubebeard i can send u there tracks to nevermind if u want i have them in my itunes that i burned from the cd. best way i think is to put in my dropbox and share them with u
@Gritagris yayayayayayayayayayayayaread a book (american hardcore to start)rip down ur nirvana poster ....this is boston not l.a....or seattle for that matter fucking look that comp up bitch boston not la nigur here fuck it you should probly just listen to this ova over again
hahahah..it wont let me post a link sop TYPE MIDNIGHT OIL -BEDS ARE BURNING.... thats your fucking anthem cunt you have no clue about music if nirvana is ur fuckin catalist bitch.u ever see a show with buyn a ticket bithc
@Gritagris oh i didnt even read ur part about them paving the way for the music we hear today.well then in that case fuck nirvana 4 condemnming rock todays music sucks balls.mainstream anyways. and by brought to the front i mean became popular idiot.word of mouth?do u just make shit up?yea everythin becomes known because people appreciate good music. i disagree.the majority of people have no sense of good music thats why top 40 is always garbage.i always thot rancid created this pop punk breed
@shavemypubebeard Music today sucks, but a lot of post-nirvana was great. Also, way to go mentioning a book about the hardcore scene in a discussion about punk, like all punk should aspire to be hardcore. Also, it was a result of word-of-mouth. without advertising funds that's what happens. Also, although the Offspring really want to be punk, there's not much punk to their music, it's more of a post-grunge/hard rock fusion, but fuck genres.
@Gritagris indeed.. fuck genres.. people that need the tag to line up before they can identify with it forfeit any right to say anything about music. by all means, use it as guide to help you track down more of the same sound you're into... but to let that determine what you will and wont listen to based on how tight they follow the code, thats just retarded
@shavemypubebeard And, assuming you're intelligent enough to read books and appreciate them despite the fucking ignorance in your comments, read Heavier than Heaven.
@Gritagris Man, I loved Minor Threat when I was 15, but seriously, you have to grow up sometime. Naked Raygun wrote better songs than Minor Threat and Nirvana combined. Just my humble opinion, of course. (Nirvana was still an amazing band.)
@finnishDEATH I agree with the part that nirvana changed music but why do you think that there will never be a band that will change music in that way,I don't think that it's ok to loose our hopes, we can't just wait and wait,someone needs to get famous in a way then play good music!
who the hell cares who is punk and who isnt. yes nirvana has punk influence and pop(which is what punk is now) rock, metal. they do it all, who cares, its good, isnt that all that maters, that its good? music is for everyone not just one person, its like you are all tryin to claim nirvana for your own.
@FooFighterFix no, actually. Joey ramone was the first person to use the term "punk" to describe that type of music and culture. The people made it, the industry adopted it.
@HandsomeMrMoe the same happened with grunge. i think it was a member of greenriver who first used the term grunge, either that or someone in subpop, and then the industries adopted that term too. but in both cases, the people invented the term and then the industry associated it to a far bigger set of bands. so i guess it was made by the people, and evolved by the industries.
@HandsomeMrMoe well punk is also a made up genre from the music industry... same with metal, and hiphop.... grunge is just a genre that didnt stay big... grunge is a mixture of punk, blues, and metal... so your right in a way.... smells like teen spirit is punkish, come as you are is blues type, lithium is metal, and blues
Nirvana has no elements of punk. At all. They were a distinct genre and the only reason you believe they were punk is because you worship Kurt Cobain and actually believe that him saying he was in a punk band makes it true.
@Plozen their abrasive crass attitudes were punk .please dont tell me you think punk music is only in sound...not presentation. their life was punk and thats why that motherfucker shot hisself he couldnt live with being some corporate bitch
@HandsomeMrMoe I dont hear any pussy songs like Green day, Blink 182, Sum 41 ect.... From Nirvana. Nirvana make's you sound like Mr.Saunders if you think Nirvana is punk.
@BrandonSpendlove You think Green day Blink 182 and Sum41are the best examples of punk??? Go listen to Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Flipper and tell me you don't see any resemblance to Nirvana.
@shavemypubebeard well go shave your pubes of your face mr beard man , yeah i noticed that aswell. damn fucking punk, i wish i was brung up during the classical period or romantic era
@BrandonSpendlove world up cro mags r ok .this is punk sounding the drumming is pogo and the three fast chords is what makes it punk plus the lyrics were true to cobain so in that aspect i say punk. code 13 from minnesota is an awesome band. i just heard this band from denver called negative degree i didnt kno what to think at first but it grows on me
@Ghostisbulletproof Oh, you can't say it's country or jazz or techno. It's rock. Alternative rock. Grunge. A bit of noise rock on In Utero. It has a genre.
@kanapatipulai This is a tribute dicksucker!!! The Offspring is one of the biggest bands in the world!! For me its an honor to see them doing this tribute to Nirvana!!! your musical culture is zeeeerrrrrooooo........PS - F*ck U!
ha i love nirvana arguments..kurt has said he got some of his songs by playing a punk riff from bands he liked backwards, i think they might be a little punky. return of rat, this song, radio friendly unit shifter(w/e the name is), verry ape,fast ver of polly, and a ton more, all punk influence...grung is the worst term ever. i dont think it meatter what kind of music you play, nirvana did many diff things. krist's eulogy-doesnt matter as long as it sounds good and has passoin
nailed it

@FooFighterFix no, actually. Joey ramone was the first person to use the term "punk" to describe that type of music and culture. The people made it, the industry adopted it.
HandsomeMrMoe 1 year ago
@HandsomeMrMoe the same happened with grunge. i think it was a member of greenriver who first used the term grunge, either that or someone in subpop, and then the industries adopted that term too. but in both cases, the people invented the term and then the industry associated it to a far bigger set of bands. so i guess it was made by the people, and evolved by the industries.

@HandsomeMrMoe Go listen to In Utero,Bleach and the majority of their music and then come back and tell us its punk.....Nirvana is NOT punk.
Iamtehroflcopter 1 year ago
@HandsomeMrMoe well punk is also a made up genre from the music industry... same with metal, and hiphop.... grunge is just a genre that didnt stay big... grunge is a mixture of punk, blues, and metal... so your right in a way.... smells like teen spirit is punkish, come as you are is blues type, lithium is metal, and blues
crazy4baseball47 1 year ago
@HandsomeMrMoe ...Melvins, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Bush, Alice in Chains etc. are genre-less, then?
MiloRamone1 1 year ago
@HandsomeMrMoe
Nirvana has no elements of punk. At all. They were a distinct genre and the only reason you believe they were punk is because you worship Kurt Cobain and actually believe that him saying he was in a punk band makes it true.
Plozen 1 year ago
@Plozen I couldn't disagree with you more....
Davetheravepow 11 months ago
@Plozen their abrasive crass attitudes were punk .please dont tell me you think punk music is only in sound...not presentation. their life was punk and thats why that motherfucker shot hisself he couldnt live with being some corporate bitch
shavemypubebeard 6 months ago

@HandsomeMrMoe Nirvana isnt in a genre. Its just music. Its art. It cannot be defined or confined to a specific genre. Its moody.
Ghostisbulletproof 6 months ago 31
@Ghostisbulletproof thats why the chose "alternative" so they wouldn't be confined to a specific sound, so they could be free.
jlqa447 5 months ago
@Ghostisbulletproof i say grunge, but i like your answer too
johnnymitnick 4 months ago
@Ghostisbulletproof aka grunge :p
WillTheFace 3 months ago
@Ghostisbulletproof Oh, you can't say it's country or jazz or techno. It's rock. Alternative rock. Grunge. A bit of noise rock on In Utero. It has a genre.
Justeatmytoast 1 month ago
@HandsomeMrMoe grunge was more of an era... def not a genre tho!! Nirvana is punk forsure!!!
crazy4baseball47 6 months ago
@kanapatipulai This is a tribute dicksucker!!! The Offspring is one of the biggest bands in the world!! For me its an honor to see them doing this tribute to Nirvana!!! your musical culture is zeeeerrrrrooooo........PS - F*ck U!
20OKYAYAYAYAYA 1 year ago
@kanapatipulai
ha i love nirvana arguments..kurt has said he got some of his songs by playing a punk riff from bands he liked backwards, i think they might be a little punky. return of rat, this song, radio friendly unit shifter(w/e the name is), verry ape,fast ver of polly, and a ton more, all punk influence...grung is the worst term ever. i dont think it meatter what kind of music you play, nirvana did many diff things. krist's eulogy-doesnt matter as long as it sounds good and has passoin
